diets? you mean food, or activities? participates in several sensory

activities through out his day, and he has a pic schedule too for school. At

home we tend to stick to routine as much as possible with pic symobls here and

there to help nathan along, plus some pic/word chores on the fridge i just put

the chore under the person whose turn it is. This helps both my boys. I would

suggest a digital camera if have one, we dont i just use a poloroid, it works

pretty good, and then pic/word symbols for mayer johnson or others too. As for

food issues, this is a constant at our house for nathan. Last night for instance

he refused and refused t eat, and I wont force him, so finally a good hour

later, his little brother was also taking his slow sweet time it was an awesome

chicken casserole, but kids their taste buds are always changing, hmmm Anyways

when everyone was done form the table I asked him again if he was going to eat,

and he said no, so i said then you can go to bed no tv etc etc, so he pottied

etc and went up to bed, i tucked him in, and he read books for awhile and fell

asleep by 830pm, a record for him,lol and didnt wake up until 730am this morning

two records in one setting, lol. During the day I usually stick wiht fun finger

foods etc, but supper is our best balanced and family meal and nathan has

learned to participate well at supper, often still refuses to eat, unless i feed

him or some major interveneing, he has a very hard time with may textures. But

now I have seen him eat with little to no gagging and starting to chew so he

must make the move to eat, we continue to encourage him and praise for great

jobs eating appropriate food at adequate amounts. But he continues to refuse I

dont battle with him anymore, he is 10yrs now its not worth the battle to us for

a time that is supposed to be nice and family time. And he is dealing with it

fine so far, so i will stick with what works for nathan. shawna.

sensory diet - help

Naturehey all,

i rarely post so how bout another intro?

me: sandy child: gabby age: 5

gabby has significant problems with her sensory system. she's defensive to

soft touch and sounds. she has big time problems with attention issues... mainly

that she doesn't pay attention or cannot because of all of her sensory needs.

i met with her OT today and was hoping to come up w a sensory diet - or a

schedule so that i know what kinds of activities i should be doing with her etc.

for me, it would work better in schedule format just because i'm much more of a

visual person.

has anyone used sensory diets with your kids? do you have any suggestions on

how i can make a very thorough one. the OTs offered me two generic schedules

that just... were kind of disappointing.

thanks in advance,

sandy

Hi Sandy, I'm , mom to Will age 5 . Wills OT came up with an

individualized plan for him for sensory diet on a daily basis broken down

into hourly intervals. We shared this information with his school and

daycare and so we all followed the same plan. His big problem was

self-stimulation, hitting his head with toys or hand and that was

interfering with his ability to learn or focus. We did brushing , joint

compression, bouncing on ball, and I got a dizzy disc to spin him on. At

night to calm him down we roll him on his ball slowly (works sometimes). Ask

her to make an individual plan based on gabbys needs and daily routine.

Hope this helps, write some more if you can, its nice to find another 5 year

old! Does she talk at all?

Hi :)

No, Gabby is non verbal. Like lots of kids with autism, she developed some

language shortly after her first birthday and then regressed. How is Will's

language development? It is kind of interesting to hear from another mom of a 5

year old...

I'm definitly going to talk with the OTs again next week. I left Thursday and

felt... so frustrated and confused and a bit angry. They seem to be awesome OTs

who know their stuff so maybe they're just not used to a anal mom like me ;)

Hi and melanie (again) - hey it's the 5-year-old club...

I forgot to elaborate on Gabby's communication. She is using PECS and mom went a

little coo-coo after seeing Joan's workshop at the NDSS conference... I printed

out about a million PECS pics that she probably isn't even ready for yet. i

think we really need to start with real life pictures.

I just saw a very good depressing movie about a child w autism " Cries from the

Heart " and I noticed that the teacher in that movie (Patty Duke no less) began

by matching real life pics to objects and now I'm wondering if this would work

better.

What's the deal with your guys' PECS and ST? Do you use real life pics or the

mayer johnson stuff or both?

Hi...I am just starting to use real pics. I bought one of those little Izone

cameras that have those little pictures in sticker form. My plan is to take

real pictures of doing stuff and then using that for his schedule board

etc. I just bought the camera yesterday so I haven't started this yet. The

film is kind of expensive so I am going to have to really plan what I want to

do...I'll let you know how it works out. My feeling is that Nick will do better

with real pictures.

Sandy, I forget where you live, but your local " regular " autism support group

would be the place to ask around for who the best OT's are in your locale for

providing sensory integration. (And don't be shy about asking who is LICENSED in

SI. Having that license makes a huge difference.) School therapists may or may

not be versed in SI. And the OT really really really does make a difference.

Better yet are the places where the speech therapists and the OT's are both

doing SI to the point where one always complements the other. Speech activities

will incorporate SI and OT will incoporate good language intervention as well.

(I.e, since platform swinging can stimulate language foe some kids, 5-7 minutes

in this typ of seing before speech therapy may prime the child very nicely for

the therapist. My son always yaks a lot during and after swinging time.

Wow thanks Beth! I had never looked at it from that standpoint - that ST

should include SI but it makes complete sense... thanks for mentioning it. Her

ST is an odd cookie and sort of set in her ways but I'm working on her... ;)

Hi Sandy and and the 5 year old club! We live in Mount Pleasant, S.C.

which is by ton and the beaches. Will hasn't really starting using

the PECS system yet due to his hyperactivity and not wanting to focus, we

will be trying more soon I hope. Is anyone doing that gluten-free diet, does

it help, if so what resources did you use to learn about it, sounds pretty

complicated to me. thanks melanie

Hi , we are in South Carolina, Mount Pleasant, right outside of

ton. Will is just starting to be exposed to the PECS system, he has

been very distractable and hyper lately though. He started school the other

day and is doing well, he rides the bus there and back and doesn't seem to

mind. He is also looking at things more. Not interested in potty training

now though. Thanks for writing back!

Hi , It is from Ct. We put on the gluten free and

casin free diet about 5 months ago. For it has worked out great.

He hasn't changed from severe to moderate or anything but it has really

increased his focus and decreased his hyperactivity. He also seemed to

have reflux pretty often and he has had none of that since we started.

It is complicated and I shop at a special market for , and it is

expensive, but he is so much healthier, better bowel movements very

regular, no reflx great complexion and very little sinus infections. he

also started within in weeks to give great hugs and have much more eye

contact. was tested for celiac and does not have it, but the food

is so healthy and my 1 1/2 year old eats most of it with .. --hope

this helps. mom to alek8, andrew7.,bailey 5 ds/asd, logan 3 and

Hi ,

We haven't changed Gabby's diet in any way but we do have a nutritionist and I

plan on asking her about the gluten free diet. Do you have a nutritionist

through your regional center?

I'd be interested in learning more too, if anyone has any info.

Gabby surprisingly has been very good on the bus since school started back up. I

don't know why really but hey I'm not complaining! Usually she has big time

issues w the bus. Maybe bc we got rid of that bitchy driver we had last year.

As far as potty training goes... another " going good " We're being very

consistant here and at school and she has gone in the potty on a fairly regular

basis and we've discovered that when she squirms the most while sitting on the

potty, that's when she really needs to sit there the most, if you know what I

mean ;)

The following guidelines represent a kind of sensory diet for one

particular child. Keep in mind that every child has a different

regulatory and sensory profile, and that these activities are not

appropriate or useful for every child. You should get guidance from

an occupational therapist or other individual who is experienced with

sensory integration.

Hi ...just read another of your posts...we are using the gluten free diet

with some pretty remarkable results...isn't too complicated for us since Nick

has a very small number of foods that he is willing to eat...let me know what

info you'd like and I'll send...hey...I could even bring it next week! Cheri

Wow! What a small world! We love living here in Mt.Pleasant, although I am

a beach girl at heart and have lived on both Sullivans Island and Isle of

Palms before. I am working some next week, lets see, off on Monday and

Tuesday, work till about 4 pm the other days. My phone number is 856-4882,

write this down because it is unlisted. Give me a call if you have the

time, maybe we can get together! Have a nice trip any way! , WILLS

mom age 5 .
