Guest guest
Hi Judy, I know the food problem isn't funny but It made my nightLOL! Our garage is our work shop quite aways from the house . We do have a frige in there for drinks but keeping all our food in there would be impossible.I am thinking of having my husband build a lockbox around the fridge but he is just as bad as Zeb. Guest guest
I think in Zeb's case the constant eating is attributed to bordom. I can't find anything that interests him other than tv.He is on the soccer team and watching him at the games is torture for me.I don't think he likes it only that they get a snack after the games. He won't run but certainly needs the exercise. He has got to be the worst on his team and gets caught up with the dirt, grass etc.One day he had a thing with the net and kept sticking his head through it.I haven't found an activity that he really enjoys doing except to eat.The little gourmet man conned his sister into buying him a white pizza with broccoli tonight. She thought that it would be fine but he ate mostly the entire pizza.I was at a meeting. Guest guest
we keep our cubboards and fridge locked otherwise nathan is always drinkning or eating something, but his little brother knows where we keep the key and is able to get moderate amount of whatever for himself or nathan. I dont understand the constant obsession with food and drink. I have been showing him how to get a drink of water out of the sink with hi purple cup, this is hleping some, now if he would always remember to turn the water off. shawna --- Judithrehling@... wrote: > We ended up putting a fridge in the garage and keep > the garage locked at all > times..in the house fridge we just keep the basics, > water, condiments, etc. > > Everytime we have respite, the kids trick the sitter > into all kinds of food. > Last week we came home from the movies and they > polished off a pan of > spaghetti, all the crackers, two liters of soda, a > gallon of milk and a beer > and a wine cooler. Guest guest
Charlyne, Gene is about 20 to 30 lbs overweight. I too think he eats due to boredom and gains weight due to lack of exercize. He too loves to watch TV. When he had his last physical with the doctor, she advised us to have him work up a sweat three times a week. I really like her but I wondered what planet she lived on....how can I get him to work up a sweat when he sits down the minute he gets a little tired? We take one mile walks at the park but it is difficult to get him to jog or even walk fast. If he is to lose weight, it will need to be from decreasing his food intake. But that is difficult to do because he has fits for certain foods...like pretzels, popcorn etc. He loves fries, pizza, all things crispy, fried. He is asking for pretzels as I write and he just finished two pieces of buttered toast. Well...I will continue to keep trying. Lauri
Guest guest
Matt also does this, but I call it " food obsession " . Seems he does not have the mechanism to tell him when to stop eating. By the way, this is a new development, over the past 18 months to 2 years. I thought it was changing his medicine. He used to be on Ritalin, which decreased his appetite for years. Then he went off that and on Risperdal, which increases appetite. HE has not taken Risperdal for months, but the appetite is the same. He craves the starches, noodles, bread, crackers, etc..., refuses vegetables, except guacamole and salsa on chips, and will say " eat " as soon as he is finsihed with dinner! It is a constant mantra. I'll bet he says it 100 times a day, easily. I am forever saying " You are finished eating now, you can eat again in 2 hours " . Or " we will eat again tomorrow " . It is literally non-stop. He has obviously gained quite a bit of weight since his medication change, and we try to do the exercise thing. He will play a little basketball with the little boy across the street, but most of that is standing in one place and shooting the ball. For baseball, he will hit the ball with the bat, but will not chase the ball if someone is throwing to him, or someone else is batting. Hates going on walks, will just sit and refuse to move. He does love swimming/playing in the water. Still trying to talk DH into a pool for this summer. Since we live in Vegas, " swimming season " is really from the end of April through November. Seems like a good investment to me! S ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Juno offers FREE or PREMIUM Internet access for less! Guest guest
Hi Everybody I have been reading all of the info. regarding the children eating and how some of you have to put locks on the fridge. I am soooo amazed at this. My son, , is 11 years old and we have the total opposite from you. We cannot get TO eat. The only foods that he likes is: Fish crackers, raisins, cereal (2 types), Stouffers lasagna, 's ceasar salad (usually 4 a day) and he will drink; milk, Sunndy D and sometimes Sprite. When we go to a restaurant or at school he will barely eat what he has on his plate. He absolutely refuses to try anything new (we have sensory integration for that)nor does he attempt to sneak food . He will get his snack food (crackers and raisins) in the afternoon but does not eat very much. weighs 93 lbs. and he is about 4' - 4 " . Have your children always had an interst in food. use to eat spaghetti for dinner every night for the past 6 years and only recently has replaced it with the lasagna. Does anyone else have a child that is a picky eater like mine? Thanks for sharing Kathy

Sure better than potato chips. How bout buying those baked chips? (less fat) And maybe using some kind of low fat margarine instead of butter. Just thinking of some ideas. We don't have a food hoarding problem with Maddie. Just a soap and candle hoarding issue!!!!! LOLOLOL Donna

Does anyone > else have a child that is a picky eater like mine? Kathy, Maddie used to be VERY ritualistic about her food. WEll, she sorta still is. She has to have toast with strawberry preserves and yogurt and banana EVERY morning. WE've tried doing something different, but she won't eat it. For instance, scrambled eggs!!! She loves them.................for lunch or dinner. But DON'T try it at breakfast. She won't eat cereal, or waffles, or pancakes. For an entire year she ate nothing but spaghetti for dinner (I used to grind up chicken and veggies and hide them in the spaghetti). Then the next year, it was only hot dogs (can't hide anything in those). Since she started this new school in September, she eats so well now. She still has some quirks (can't get her to eat cereal, waffles or pancakes still), but she eats most other things. She's actually probably the most diverse eater now of all 5 of my kids....well, maybe not the 20 yo....he's like a garbage disposal...LOL.......;-) Soup is the new thing she LOVES. Preferably tomato!! Donna

Guest guest
yes nathan is a very very picky eater, he would live off of pizza, ravioli, or grilled cheese if i would let him, he rarely eats anything at school, but he often asks for food, and at home he continually asks for food or drink, and wont touch something like if i make meat vegies and mashed potatoes, sometimes he might eat a few of mashed potatoes, but he also has gotten into and eaten whole loaves of bread, his main thing, and will eat a whole pizza if we let him, once he ate a whole ice cream bucket of oreo's which i didnt get because he wont eat cookies or at least rarely does he. We keep thinking if he is hungry he wil eat what we are, but nope he wont eat just sits there yacking to himself, and then a few minutes after clearing the table, he is requesting some toast, but we dont give in, and with all of this i dont get how the docs say heis obese, he doesnt look it, but he is like solid rock heavy. One thing i have found that helps at supper time is to make a PB or grilled cheese sandwhich for him and after each bite of supper he gets a bite of his sandwich, it works, so he at least gets a tiny bit of variety, lol. shawna. --- UrthMan <outerspace@...> wrote: > Hi Everybody > > I have been reading all of the info. regarding the > children eating and how some of you have > to put locks on the fridge. Guest guest
i wonder if doctors understnd how hard it is to listen to your child literally cry and scream because they insist they are hungry, i try to redirect nathan sometimes this works or i delay him by saying oh its cooking, lol, but its gets rediculous when one cant even what a tv show, without constant interruptions for food or drink, oh ive also been having nathan drinks lots of water, he would rarely drink it before, but we only by a pop if out, none in the house, from the grocery store. and no kool aid either, only milk and wawter and tea in the fridg, i even had to stop buying juice he would drink it all, he just downs it in a couple minutes. Now nathan has this thing for chocolate milk, uugh, his little brother showed him this so he gets the hersheys syrup out and the milk, thank god its skim, lol but when the hersheys is all gone i wont be buying anymore unless special ocasion with icecream. shawna. --- timothytlstein@... wrote: > Charlyne, > > Gene is about 20 to 30 lbs overweight. Guest guest
to this day has never had candy, ice cream, desert of any kind. He has no interest in food other than just getting by and there are days when he never eats we do manage to give him fluids on a regular basis. We spend $35.00 a week just buying 's ceasar salads (he will never accept any other kind, even when I buy that type of salad and bacon bits and put them in the containers that 's uses-he know every time) was obese up until he turned 3 (started walking) and since then he has slimmed down. rarely tries new foods. Once (this may sound gross) I put little bits of steak in his bowl of cereal just to get him to eat them. It worked!! is very solid and strong too. It is amazing the amount of strength these children have. Thanks for sharing your story Kathy Re: re: food hording > yes nathan is a very very picky eater, he would live > off of pizza, ravioli, or grilled cheese if i would > let him, he rarely eats anything at school, but he > often asks for food, and at home he continually asks > for food or drink, and wont touch something like if i > make meat vegies and mashed potatoes, sometimes he > might eat a few of mashed potatoes, but he also has > gotten into and eaten whole loaves of bread, his main > thing, and will eat a whole pizza if we let him, once > he ate a whole ice cream bucket of oreo's which i > didnt get because he wont eat cookies or at least > rarely does he. He always liked alot of things...would eat broccoli, cheerios, lots of apples and oranges. In the last year to two, he has developed more sensory issues with eating. He spits alot of food out and makes noises like he absolutely cannot stand that in his mouth. He just plain now eats ALOT of the things he still tolerates and likes...like the pretzels, popcorn, pizza ( mainly crust ), likes spaghetti, etc...but now the apples, more vegetables like peas, etc...are really not tolerated by him. But in alot of way, sensory issues for him have really skyrocketed in the last year. He isn't on medication and never has been, so I am inclined to think this is puberty related. He is 11 years old now and he has a mustache(not thick) and hair on his legs. When he was 8 1/2 I tried to explain to him regarding his pubic hair which he seemed to be fine with. He does hump pillows, basketball, stuffed animals, etc. and he does keep his clothes on still. The other thing is that he will only do this in private (in his room, but the door open) we allow him to do so but we limit him because sometimes he would be 30-45 minutes, so I set an egg timer outside the door and when it went off that meant that he had to do something else. I find that he does this daily and will think about it when he starts to get bored or if he has nothing else to do. I always try to keep him busy doing things but later in the evening he does go in his room to watch basketball games that we have on tape and he will go on his computer or he will play video games and alternate that and his computer. He will only watch sports and sesame street. After 30 minutes I check on him and sometimes I will notice that he isn't interested in doing these things and decides to start humping on objects and so I tell him to come with me and we will find something else to do and that also helps to get him out of his room - which is the only place he feels comfortable doing that. As a mother - I dreaded this stage but so far it has been o.k. We graduated him from a bath to taking a shower and his dad is the one that instructs him in his showering(while dad wears shorts) or if he is at work I instruct from outside the shower stall. I want him to understand about his privacy times - like being in his room, the bathroom, shower, etc. and so we are trying to give him that step by step. How is puberty in your house??? Guest guest
does he like the water? With the warm weather coming up i would take him to the pool, even if he is in the toddler pool, using all those muscles help burn calories. try making sure he only gets goodies like diet pop or low fat yogurt or yogurt ice cream. One thing i have found to work is i only make just enough food for our meals and then when nathan asks for seconds i show him its all gone, and then redirect him to playing toys or whatever. Also keeping just the bare minimum in the cuboards or fridge helps too. doesnt like to walk or run either, but does like to wrestle and swim, and now that he has a trike, and it pedals very easily, i think even easier than a normal bike, he has rode it a few times a good distant, but wont ride it in front of the house like his brother does yet. We take him on the trail he loves this. --- charlyne1121@... wrote: > In a message dated 5/22/2001 9:14:15 AM Eastern > Daylight Time, > stolzfamily@... writes: > > > > Matt also does this, but I call it " food > obsession " . > > I'm relieved that someone else can relate to the > food thing.I am trying to > find ways to increase the physical level.I am trying > walks but we do not get > too far.I have tried kicking balls but he won't > chase them.I am losing the > weight not the child. If anyone has any ideas I am > open.
