Guest guest
Hi Leah, Thanks for your input. I do have a high powered attorney and we will probably eat a lot of pasta. The cost of fighting for your child's entitlements are crazy. Special ed is a right that isn't granted unless you fight.I need to fight not only for me but for all the other children that will follow Zeb. I know that you do not have to go to mediation it is a parents choice. Every person in Ct. that sits in these hearings are trained but I sometimes don't think it matters. How did you do in mediation? I have a meeting today and I'm so tired that I'm trying to get fired up. Where are those bees? Thanks Charlyne, Pete,Cait LD 20, Zeb DS-?
Guest guest
Hi Charlyne, Seth is no where ready for inclusion in a reg ed class. I mean, no where ready. LOL Not even music, art, gym. Most of the time at school he has 2 people working with him. One to keep him from running, and one to do hand over hand work. It takes two people to feed him. One to hold his head and get him to open his mouth, and one to feed him. Not for the whole meal, but to get the food in his mouth so he can taste it first. He needs the 6-1-1 room for now. The district is adamant that he go to the *sever* room next year. I am adamant that he won't go to that room. There is not much talking in that room, it upsets the kids. There is no socialization in that room either. They are the two most important things, I think. It is just hand flapping and screaming all day long. My dh works 3 to midnight, so I have Seth and the girls myself every night. There is no way to teach him things I want him to learn at home when he is in school al day and I am alone here nights. I want him to be a part of our family, and that happens in the daytime here. After 3:00 it's running the girls to all their activities and getting things ready for school the next day. He misses our family dinner at 1:00, and actually all of our family time. We all miss him being a part of our family life. I know he won't do as well academically here, but taking everything into consideration, for all of us, this is what we will try for this summer and see how it goes. I still have to battle with the IEP to get things in place if keeping him home doesn't work out this summer. I just know things aren't working the way I want them to, with Seth not being a part of our family life. I have been pondering the notion of just sending him to school from 8 to 11 and then we would still have 4 hours together every day, but still wouldn't put him in the *sever* room. If Seth's abilities were any where near Zeb's, I wouldn't have a problem with the class they would put Seth in, but still would be torn about Seth not being around here for family time. For my dh to only see him only on the weekends is hard on both of them. One thing I have learned Charlyne is that I don't set anything in stone! LOL I may have Seth home this summer and say...ENOUGH!!!!!!!! LOL Gail << Hi Gail, I think the worst thing in the world would be homeschooling for any child with delays. The school enviroment is so much different and our kids tend to get too comfortable at home. They need to learn how to socialize with other people than just the family and also will do more educationally with a stranger than with mom. I feel fortunate to have Zeb in an inclusive enviroment. He has the opportunity to model from typical peers and the advantage of more than just a functional education. I am always in school and provide many manipulatives to make this happen. He will never work wholly on grade level but what he is getting is more than what I can give him. Zeb cannot write but will dictate his story at journal time to a peer. The teacher had many doubts but gave him the chance. He joined the other students in the group to discuss their stories and Zeb actually raised his hand and asked one of the other students who was her main character. The teacher said to the student before you answer, Zeb who do you think it was. He gave the teacher the correct answer. He now participates daily.Could this be attained at home? Will all the battles it is worth keeping them in school. Guest guest
Hi Gail, I know where of you speak! LOL is in a self-contained SDC and it really is the best placement for him at this point in his life. As much as I would like to see him included in a regular ed class, I know that it wouldn't be the best thing for him now. Like Seth, he has a 1:1 aide that works hand over hand with him on IEP goals & objective activities. He (along with his class) goes to the cafeteria for lunch and to the gym for assemblies. He has a " peer " helper that takes him on walks during the day and to the gym where he watches the HS boys play basketball and such. He really likes that but these activities really stretch his endurance socially. Inclusion just isn't in his best interest at this time. Guest guest
Hi Gail, I think keeping home this summer sounds like a good solution. If it works out I would definately try the 8-11. You have to do what's in your heart no matter what. Charlyne

Sure hope we can get together at a nearby park for a couple of hours of chat. Sorry about Zeb's IEP. I'm so thankful I have the option of waiting the board out. I can't handle the stress they cause. I told them they had better find appropriate placement for Seth or he would be attending the school down the road. (local elementary). They said no way could he do that, it was not an option and he would have to have home tutoring. WE'LL SEE!!!!! LOL Not that the local school is appropriate and it would probably do him a lot of harm, but I couldn't resist saying an equally stupid thing as they. LOL Chances are he will be home with me for the coming year, which will probably cause the least harm of all the options at this time. Seth doesn't legally have to go to school until 2002, so I can afford to take my time, play the wait and see game, and then tell them to take a hike. LOL I really hate what they have turned me into. (what I have LET them turn me into). I think I need to take the year to chill out! LOL Sure hope you get things worked out for Zeb Charlyne. Guest guest
Hi Gail, I planned my schedule to be home on those dates, can't wait! I was up until 3;30 am with all the school stuff.I hate what the school does but I am certainly happy to have the knowledge and resources to do battle. It has made me a stronger person and maybe that's a good thing.I think the school has also learned a few things about letting our children be included.Despite all our problems we need to stay strong and pave the way.I have to stay positive.Anxious to meet you. Guest guest
Praying that the toilet training is successful. We still have the > goodnights for bed and have just given up with the nightime stuff.Once he falls asleep even after 5 min. he is wet so I am just grateful that we have the daytime under control. > Charlyne > Mom to Zeb 8 DS-? Charlyne , Thanks I need to hear it , I've waited too long for this . I hope this is the year . Great accomplishments on Zeb , that is nice , daytime under control . I'll be satisfied if could do that . I called his teacher at home to notify her about the challenge she will confront at school , starting school Wed.. She told me no problem , looking forward to it . I know her mind is spinning on wheels of how she will work with him . She even requested alot of new equipment for PE because loves certain activities . Said , she knows will enjoy it very much . 's teacher had met him when he was probably about 8 yrs. old , she was a teachers aide at middle school for my nephew who is also special need . I Thank God that I was able to attend to my nephews events , he always wanted his Aunt Irma around , so of course I made time for him . Still do , but he is in High School and lives across town now . When I heard had her as a Teacher for middle school . Boy! was I happy . Its just great to have a teacher that will go out of her way for her class . Take Care . Irma , 13,DS/ASD.
