Guest guest
Okay, we need to include this place for a visit when we come! LOL It sounds yummy! LOL Gail << LOL Well Gail, it sort of is like an Italian ice, but the ones in Philly are truly different. Dont' know what it is. But the gelati is a cup with water ice on the bottom, then vanilla custard ice cream, then more water ice, then topped with more ice cream. I think our family alone keeps Rita's in business. My cousin from Holland visits every summer with his three boys and last year, they went to Rita's AT LEAST three times a day......LOLOL Donna >>

Whenever I've taken a trip longer than a week, the very first thing I do when we come home is order a cheesesteak. I get a pizza steak with extra cheese, extra fried onions, and sweet peppers. You know, one of the BIG secrets to great hoagies and steaks is our rolls!! Donna

Guest guest
Donna, My sister and her 3 kids live in Philly and have never said a word about this great food or gelati that you are talking about. Does everyone know about it or do I need to cue her in. Let me know the main ones and I tell her. She works a lot and may not get out that much. Thanks Marisa

Well, if your a typical Philadelphian and don't get out of the city much, you probably wouldn't even notice. For instance, my first time in DC, while dating Duff, we went to a restaurant and I asked for a cheesesteak. The waitress kept asking me.... " You want cheese on your steak???? " I was like... " YEA....DUH " I got a T-bone smothered in mozzarella. Duff got a HUGE kick out of my innocense. As far as cheesesteaks go, the famous ones are in South Philly, but I personally don't like them. We have some local places and I always order pizza steak, extra cheese and onions and sweet peppers. Hoagies are another story. You gotta know the right places. Lee's Hoagie house is the best. Soft Pretzels are best when purchased downtown at the soft pretzel bakeries....YUM!!!! And scrapple?!?! Oh, don't get me started.....LOLOLOL Donna (born and bred in Philly) P.S. Oh Joan???? These are all healthy foods, right?!?!?!?
Guest guest
Donna, Thanks for the info, I was particularly interested in the gelati though. I come from a completely Italian family and we love gelato so I would like to tell her to go to Rita's. But, where is it? As a matter or fact we have 2 of our Italian relatives visiting right now and my cousin and her dh are coming tomorrow. Unfortunately, my cousin, my age, may have MS and will be back again next month to go to s Hopkins to be tested. My other sister , flew in from Boston for a visit and to be here for my sister Jackie's surgery also. We are a very close family even if we don't all live nearby. Anyway I'm sure my sister in Philly would love to get a hold of that gelati, so let me know where it is so I can let her know. Thanks a lot Donna. The gelati at Rita's is fake.....not real Italian gelato (which I used to get at Fanuel Hall in Boston -- white chocolate -- to die for). All it is is water ice (whatever flavor floats your boat) with vanilla custard ice cream on top. Still, Philadelphians love it. And they have the best water ice around. Rita's is a chain and I'll bet they make an absolute FORTUNE!!! There all over, even on the NJ boardwalk now. Donna
