Guest guest
I take a prescription sleeping pill called Lunesta. My husband prefers a natural sleeping supplement called Melatonin. ~a ________________________________ From: Moss <lindajmoss@...> " " < > Sent: Mon, October 18, 2010 2:44:43 PM Subject: Extreme insomnia post chest infection Thanks again to those who helped me through my recent chest infection by providing advice and hope. After weeks of what seemed endless congestion it cleared over a week ago. I still feel terrible though as I haven't slept properly for weeks. For example I didn't get to sleep til 9.30am this morning. If I am lucky other nights I get to sleep by 6am. I am so exhausted I can't function, can't organise my pas properly etc. My pas are getting exhausted too as I am needing extra turning due to unbearable need to have my legs moved. Hoping to get some top sleep tips here as desperate. I was also wanting advice on which meds are ok to take to help sleep without affecting respiratory drive. I do use a bipap overnight but never been monitored to see how effective it is. I know my mouth sometimes falls open so worry about that affecting it's effectiveness. Have tried chin strap with little joy. A cold remedy with antihistamine in used to make me sleep but that no longer works. My father is suggesting alcohol. I feel like I am going insane! Guest guest
Hi , I'm so glad you've got over the congestion but sorry to hear about the sleeping. Alcohol won't help. I think your sleep cycle has been altered with all the stress, how about trying methods of mental relaxation? Obviously, on this page you can't do the breathing technique easily with a Bipap on, but the others you could try. http://www.ambiencr.com/how-to-sleep-better/sleep-relaxation-exercises/mental-re\ laxation.aspx my daughter has a Bipap that beeps if her mouth opens and the pressure drops, she's learned not to open her mouth so much with the beeping, and maybe they could let you borrow an oximetre to use overnight and see how your levels are? > > Thanks again to those who helped me through my recent chest infection > by providing advice and hope. Guest guest
Thanks for the tips :-) I tried the English version of benadryl, called nytol. It has the same sedating antihistamine as the active ingredient but just didn't work as I didn't even get one hours sleep. My gp is stuck in France due to fuel strikes so I contacted his colleague who wasn't prepared to give me any prescription med to sleeep. Has anyone here managed to safely use stronger than over the counter meds to sleep. I also asked the doc for a blood test to check it wasn't an over active thyroid problem as I have high heart rate in addition to insomnia. This should happen tomorrow with results in a week. Going to play relaxing music for rest of my evening!
