Hello all,

I have SMA II. Approximately 8 years ago I developed acute urinary retention

stemming from my constipation. I would allow my constipation to get so severe

that I would have difficulty urinating and eventually I had to be catherized.

After my catheter was removed, I was able to urinate but my badder did not stay

contracted the way it used to. My urologist indicated that I might have

damaged my bladder muscles and that I needed to keep my bowels active because my

ability to urinate was contingent on moving my bowels. I have been subsequently

able to deal with this through the years as I regularly take lactulose to help

move my bowels. However, just recently my bladder is not contracting normally.

Out of the blue, it feels as if my bladder doesn't have the same contracting

strength. I have never heard these symptoms being associated with SMA. Has

anyone ever dealt with anything similar to what I have described? It is quite

frustrating. Thanks for listening.

Urinary retention is common with SMA. I always had to have someone press on my

lower belly to help me empty my bladder. I now have a suprapubic catheter so

this is not an issue for me anymore.

hello.  My name is .  Doctors think I have SMA IV.  It is not definite

but it is a best guess.  I am fifty-six years old.  About five years go, I had

a urine retention and was told by the ER doctor that my sphinter muscles were

not working and I needed a permanent catheter.  I don't know anyone else with

adult onset SMA.  My DNA blood test results did not match SMA one or two and I

understand they do not have a test for me.  I thought the operation was a

little drastic since I had never had a retention problem before.  But all my

doctors agreed.  So I went for it and got it over as soon as I
