How to eat/drink when on bipap?

I use a bipap overnight and during day when tired. Ipap 19 epap 4.

As I'm starting to use it more there is an overlap with when I have to

eat/drink. The last couple of days I've had periods of upper airway congestion

and the only thing I can link it to is aspirating when on bipap.

Any top tips would be really appreciated and help my anxiety!

My friend had her PA turn the machine of every time she wanted to swallow

something. Just turning it off usually isn't enough for me because of the back

pressure in the tubing. I have to separate the mask tube from the circuit hose.

I've been on my BiPAP for over 21 years and still mostly use it at night except

when sick, but all my pulmonologists have always told me not to eat or drink

while on the BiPAP because of extreme danger of aspiration. I'm not sure what I

would do if they overlapped. Hope this helps

Good luck,

Erek

Brett used to always eat and drink on the bipap, especially when he was sick. He

just learned how to coordinate the swallowing with the machine. He doesn't

really do it anymore though but I will ask him when he gets home from church if

he has any advice. Thanks!

I have been using a BiPAP for many years and I have never had that problem.

Once, when I was in the hospital doctors were not comfortable seeing me eating

and drinking while my machine was on. They wanted me to take a swallowing test

which just proved I do not aspirate. The secret is carefulness. Don't take big

bites and don't talk when your mouth is full. Breathe through your mouth. Loosen

up your mask to avoid pressure you can't compensate with exhaling.
