Here in PA, the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation will pay for the

modifications but you have to provide the van. I have worked with them on and

off since 1990 and I've never had a problem getting what I needed, although a

couple times I had to wait for more funding to become available. I've never had

a problem re-opening my case with them when something new comes up.

I'm going through the process right now with them and wanting them to cover

modifications. Tshindle(sorry don't know your name), could you give me any

advice or anything on how you went about it or what you said within your case to

get it approved? Greatly appreciated!

Sorry, Preet, I haven't tried to get a van yet.  I think it was because I had

an excellent case worker that I found it to be so easy.  I had statements from

her, an occupational therapist (also provided by the Office of Vocational

Rehab) and my specialist at the MDA clinic that I needed these things and so

far, I have never been denied.

I'm actually just getting the adaptive equipment for the van provided by them

but thanks for those ideas!

That scenario is the same in Florida regarding purchasing the chassis and VR

purchasing the " conversion " and the " driving system " . The " conversion " is the

lowered floor, automatic ramp & door, and automatic kneel. My husband is on his

fourth vehicle and the most recent experience was the worst because of different

changes in income requirements. It also took about 12 months which is much

longer than it had for the others. We have had a Braun conversion for the last

3 vehicles and they've been fine. This one will be equipped with joy stick

driving because even the small wheel he had used in the past is getting too

difficult. (Ralph Braun has SMA 3 like my husband).

Even though his case gets " closed " after each purchase (because he successfully

is able to continue to work) each time the van starts dying (around the 8 year

mark) he has to reopen the case. Also, even though he doesn't qualify, in

Florida, the Medicaid Waiver will pay for some components of an accessible

vehicle (like the power ramp and the power door, etc.). That is particularly

helpful for parents of children with disabilities. Good Luck, & Joe

I'm pretty comfortable in my Chrysler Town & Country minivan with a VMI

conversion.

a mini or conversion van with a ramp. My main concern is comfort because bumpy

rides aren't good. Any suggestions?

I also have a Toyota Sienna w/ an IMS rampvan. It's great--I think minivans are

less bumpy because you are not as high off the ground. We used to have a big

Chevy van w/ a Braun lift too and the minivan was a huge improvement in the

quality of the ride.

Currently I have a Dodge Caravan with the Braun conversion which is much better

than the two previous vehicles that I had. Those were both IMS conversions of

the Plymouth Voyager. I find that the Braun package is much more durable.

Another interesting factor about Braun is that it was founded by a person with

SMA.

In terms of which vehicle will work for you, it depends on where you are

driving. With the minivans, sometimes I find that there is not enough room

underneath and the vehicle actually bottoms out. One would think that in New

York City this wouldn't happen, but between instruction and the omnipresent

potholes, the cars take an absolute beating! Also, about once per year, I go up

to Cape Cod to my father's cottage. The driveway is about 1/8 of a mile of

unpaved surface. I definitely wish there was more space under the car.

My last van wag a Dodge Caravan.  It bottomed out a lot and once we even needed

a new gas tank because something hit it underneath the van.  We do not have

that problem with the Sienna.  That's why we chose it.

I am definitely interested in the Sienna for my next vehicle. When I bought my

last car, the Sienna conversion had not been on the market that long and there

were no used one's available. In Brooklyn it doesn't make any sense to buy a

brand-new vehicle. Even with my special handicap parking permit, parking on the

street automatically means that your car takes a beating.

Also, I use the EZ lock tiedown system. A special bracket is attached under my

chair with a pin that is locked into a bracket on the floor. It really works

great!

Yes, the Sienna, Caravan, and Town & Country minivans are all big enough for

most wheelchairs. My very tall 6'4 " friend did not fit in my van. Most vans

also have the option of sitting where the removeable passenger seat is or behind

the 2 front seats. I have transported 2 people in chairs.
