Guest guest
Hi! Is your name ? I see it in your e-mail address and like that better than calling your ShopingShorty. Grin. In Alabama there are Medicaid programs designed to help people with disabilities live independently at home. I'll be honest with you; Alabama is not the greatest state at providing services for people with disabilities but you probably already know that. My friend Nick fought with them all his life until he recently moved from Mobile, Alabama. I'll try to connect you with him. He's an expert at Medicaid services there. Here's the link to information about Alabama's Home & Community-Based Medicaid Waivers: http://www.medicaid.alabama.gov/CONTENT/4.0_Programs/4.3.0_LTC/4.3.1_Home_Comm_B\ ased_Waiver.aspx Let us know how it's going. Guest guest
Hi ShopingShorty, Nick said this: " the SAIL waiver that provides maybe 2-4 hours of PCA per weekday is closed with a waiting list of 20,000 people, basically she has no options. She could talk to Birmingham CIL but they can't do much. " and sent a link to a pretty grim article: " check this out in the Birmingham News, it's Medicaid apocalypse perpetually http://blog.al.com/sweethome/2011/03/alabama_medicaid_budget_has_no.html " I'm really sorry this is such bad news. But I do recommend that you get your name on that waiver waiting list. You might also check other resources. If you have friends or family willing and able to temporarily contribute some funds to hire short-term help, that could offer you some relief. Also, if you're a member of a religious community you might be able to get some assistance there. Nick worked very hard to finally move out of Alabama. If you plan to stay there you might consider joining up with other people with disabilities to fight for improved services. Your current crisis is an example of what politicians, news outlets, and the general public need to understand. It's a horrible personal crisis for tens of thousands of people in your state. But affecting big change happens slowly. You need a solution quickly. Let us know if you need any hope on strategies for asking for help in your community or getting your education quickly so you can get a job. Your situation is very upsetting for many of us here. It reminds me of feeling helpless when my family put me in a nursing home when I was a teenager. It really sucked. Please stay in touch. Sincerely, Alana > > > > i live in alabama neaar birmingham > > >
Guest guest
Hi Alana, I tried getting on Michigans Medicaid Waiver list and was told there's a couple years wait too. DHS told me to get on the Home Help Program, I get 90 hours a month through a homecare agency I hired. The state only pays these poor girls $9 an hour and they have a hard time staffing me, but it was my only option. Might AL have something similar? Guest guest
Hi Doug, It's different in every state and providing homecare for adults is optional. Alabama seems to offer nursing homes as the option. Alana > > Hi Alana, I tried getting on Michigans Medicaid Waiver list and was told there's a couple years wait too. Guest guest
Hi , Yes, it's pretty grim in Florida, too. In either state you'll need to get on a waiting list for their Home & Community-Based Services (HCBS) waiver. Here's the link: http://www.myflorida.com/accessflorida/ There's also Home Care for Disabled Adults (HCDA). The existence of the waivers is pretty hidden. See this document: http://www.dcf.state.fl.us/programs/access/docs/ssi_fin_elig_chart.pdf Alana > > > > > > > > i live in alabama neaar birmingham > > > > > > > > > >
