Guest guest
When I've traveled I've done both splitting costs and/or just paying for them. It always comes down to them feeling like they're NOT responsible for incurring costs even if they are " working " . Traveling has not been the best for relationships between myself and the nurse/attendant. When I was younger (in college) I went on a cruise with a nurse and we agreed she would pay half of the cost of the room/air. She was on her own to pay for excursions, tips, alcoholic beverages, and phone calls. Now that I'm an adult with more income (and a husband) we usually just pay for their airfare and an extra room at the hotel. Meals, phone calls, etc. are still their financial responsibility. It really comes down to you how badly you want to travel--if it's very important to you--you can ask them to pay for their way but ultimately you're probably going to have to pay their way. ~a ________________________________ From: rdubin86 <rdubin86@...> Sent: Wed, January 26, 2011 9:22:27 PM Subject: Need advice on travel with an attendent I've been wanting to go on vacation and need some input. I would like to go on a cruise and need to take an attendent. I live on a limited income. What is expected as far as who pays for things? They would be getting paid during the trip. Is it right to ask them to pay for thier fair? The costs involved are cruise fair, tips, shore excursions, and at least $400 in transportation. I've been saving for awhile, what should I do? Guest guest
Hi , I've seen a lot of different ways people negotiate travel with their assistants. In virtually all the scenarios that I've seen, the client covers the expenses; airfare, food, lodging, etc. Sometimes that's enough for an assistant who really wants to go, if the workload isn't too rigorous and they know they will have down time. I've never done this, but some of my friends have when their traveling assistant is also a good friend, sibling, cousin, etc. who would want to travel together anyway. I usually pay both expenses and a flat rate per day. It's definitely expensive, and now even moreso for me now that I travel with my partner and we want a separate room. I hope you have a wonderful trip! Where do you want to go? Alana > > I've been wanting to go on vacation and need some input. I would like to go on a cruise and need to take an attendent. Guest guest
With travel in the past I've covered the cost of the PCA's transport, their own room [with request to go easy on ordering movies and extras stuff] I had the schedule solid of their hours on duty and off duty set ahead, paid the on duty hours. Meals sometimes w gave the pca a set allowance per diem [depended on if we had meals included in the trip aka resort buffets etc]. omg- those cruise clips- that's why I'm leery of cruises because rough seas could kill us. Recently ablebods on a spamcation cruise talked about getting tossed out of bed. That would hurt folks with sma bad. check out an additional slip sloshing away video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jH1NYo7hlhM & NR=1 <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jH1NYo7hlhM & NR=1> > > I would suggest a land vacation.
