Guest guest
Hi cheryl, i am pretty new to this group too and also pretty new to the autism diagnosis. Nick is 6 and was diagnosed with autism in 12/00...we suspected it for quite awhile but took lots of time and lots of appts. to get a diagnosis. nick's " autistic-like behaviors " consist of stimming (favorite object is a little tykes doll house table! used to be plastic coat hangers), very rigid diet...not our doing, his..., some head banging when frustrated...altho not alot, guteral throat scratching sound which gets more pronounced if he is anxious, social difficulties depending on group, sometimes lack of eye contact, no idea of safety issues...what's hot, what's dangerous...like the road...that scares the hell out of me...so far no wandering but who knows what's to come, he doesn't speak much but is beginning to use more words in the right context, lots of sensory issues, doesn't usually seek out toys...very addicted to watching videos and making sure cases are arranged just so! BUT...Nick is very affectionate, can melt even the coldest of hearts and has a grin that lights up my darkest moments and surely has an innocence that sometimes i wish we all had! will lok forward to hearing more from you! Guest guest
Hi Gail and Sheri, thanks for the welcome. I have 4 kids. Guess I worded it wrong. 2 of each. Angel is my youngest, short for . It suits her better. We live on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. Angel's behavs are not the behavs one might see in typical autism. Yet she has some autistic tendancies. She isn't a spinner with toys and does play with them. She loves to play make believe and is a great nurturer. She has really bad communication breakdowns and bites, hits, kicks, hairpulls, spits, yells etc. She likes routine at school and doesn't like change or transition well without it. She uses ASL, pics and emerging speech to communicate. She hasn't lost speech but doesn't have alot. ASL is her strong point and she is excellent at it. She is learning to print and is eagar to please. She has incredible fears of household appliances and it took years to be able to use the vaccuum or hairdryer. She runs really fast when a scary appliance or lawn mower, electric saw come out. She freaks out and covers her ears, signing 'all done, stop'. She will freak out over a vehicle in front of us while we are driving, she has to drive the same way to school, the same way to aunties etc. Needs to enter certain buildings the same way, leave the same way, but not all. Has some tactile defensiveness with socks, hair and some shirts. Has to constantly have her hand down the back of her pants, scratching her butt. It's gross, but there is always a hand there. Lacks eye contact but will make it when I draw her eyes to my hand and lead her to my eyes. She then acknowledges me and responds accordingly. She can only play with one person at a time. The rest can all go to H#$$ as far as she is concerned. She will get aggressive with anyone else trying to play along. Seems to be able to focus and plays well in one to one. She can watch the same movie for weeks. Drives me nuts. Mouths everything, very oral. She has chronic sinusitis and chokes on the mucous, she lacks oral sensory awareness and doesn't chew her food well or sense it there so this adds to her probs and puts her at further risk. She is a true blessing to our family and is as smart as a whip. Can't imagine living without her. She is incredible. The true love of our lives. I thank God for her daily. Guest guest
Nick also has a problem with oral sensitivity and awareness....big feeding issues and he does not chew at all...would love to chat with you about what Angel eats and if she receives therapy for that. Guest guest
Hi Cheryl, Welcome to the list! We found that the best way to keep from escaping is to have chimes or alarms on all of our doors. As soon as we put them on and that he couldn't get out without us knowing it cut down tremendously on his running away. He still manages to get out if I am the only one home and I'm in the shower or if he goes out a window, but these incidents are becoming less and less. He's 12 now. We've been dealing with running ever since he learned to open a door. There are also some child locator devices out there that I want to research but haven't gotten to yet. If I get some info on this stuff I'll post it on the list. Mom to 12 --- magnussen@... wrote: > I am mom to 4. Two boys ages 23 and 22. Guest guest
Hi , thanks for the welcome. I like the chime idea. I was also thinking about installing some type of alarm system to tell us when she is leaving the house. Caught her trying to excape via a window today. I had opened it a crack to let some air in while she was at school and forgot to close and lock it. Bad move. Learning here...... Thanks for the welcome and the ideas. Guest guest
hi cherly, its great to meet you!! i know exactlyhow you feel, my son, nathan is quite the hudini himself, he has left the house several times in the early morning hours, to ride is trike on the road, has gone into neighbor houses, has wnadered off at walmart, foun dhim out in the parking lot just wandering around not even noticing cars etc. what we did is first we put door alarms on our out going doors (you can get fairly inexspensive at a radio shack) and then we got him a vailbed, and boy that really cured him of the wandering, it took a good few years of training but now so far anyways we are free of nightime house wandering, without his vail on, but we have it stored in case of its need in the future. shawna. >From: magnussen@... >Reply- > >Subject: Hi, I'm Cheryl >Date: Sun, 18 Mar 2001 17:32:51 -0000 > >I am mom to 4. Guest guest
Hi a, how old is ? Man, he sounds very busy. Did you prewarn police that your child goes missing so they would know where to find you when it happens? I am wondering if this might be a good idea. Wonder what they do when they find a missing kid who can't talk? My husband is has a moderate to severe heaing disability and would never hear the alarm or chimes so these wouldn't work when he is watching over her, or if I slept through it. I really want to know what a veil bed is. And how and why it worked for ? Thanks, Cheryl Hi, I'm Cheryl > >Date: Sun, 18 Mar 2001 17:32:51 -0000 > > > >I am mom to 4. Two boys ages 23 and 22. Guest guest
nathan is 9yrs now, and we got his vaibed around 4yrs old for him, everyone knows of nathan, he has more friends than i could even count i think, everywhere i go there is someone saying hi to nathan, so he gets around, lol. your DH haveing a hearing disability will greaten your chances of getting one, i remember having to writhe all the things and beds we have tried previously, etc, this will aid in a positive decision for the bed i think. shawna. >From: " Cheryl Magnussen " <magnussen@...> >Reply- >< > >Subject: Re: Hi, I'm Cheryl >Date: Tue, 20 Mar 2001 20:47:51 -0800 > >Hi a, >how old is ?
