Guest guest
Hi, . My son, , is 4 1/2 and has been in a special pre-K school for the past 2 years. They have kids with all sorts of diagnoses, but the emphasis is on sensory integration. Almost all of the kids have trouble with transitions, and I know that this is a general problem with all kids that age. However, 's preschool teachers have had great success with picture schedules helping transition from one activity to the next. The other thing they use is lots of talking, letting the kids know ahead of time what's coming up next. The children may fuss a bit, but it also seems to help smooth transitions. Good luck, Carole need help with transitions > Hi. Guest guest
: I highly recommend using a visual system for this. If you can get to our groups weblinks section, there are some links to visual strategies. One of them even has photographs of tons of different schedules for kids defining what they're to do throughout the day. print it off and take it along! Also, of they have trouble with the concept, look at Hodgdon's book. It has entire sections for this. It's a HUGE help. We use it all the time at home. j At 05:29 AM 1/18/01 -0000, you wrote: >Hi. Guest guest
Picture schedules has helped nathan tremendously, in fact he still uses them at school, no longer at home, he has transitioned mostly out of their need around the house, i use to have pic symbols everywhere, and pic/word symbol schedules for most of his tasks, eg: brushing teeth or dressing, after each pic was done he put it in done box, helped him learn how to dress himself etc. He still uses pic schedules at school, so he knows what he has left for the day and whats coming next, we started this in ECSE and boy did those transition tantrums drastically reduce. Now the little stinker, when his teacher or aid isnt looking will take off a pic of subject doesnt want to do and add one he wants, or move up some such as cmoputer or luch time, lol, shawna. >From: jk-harding@... >Reply-egroups >egroups >Subject: need help with transitions >Date: Thu, 18 Jan 2001 05:29:00 -0000 > >Hi. Guest guest
Oh, i remember also, they use to give nathan a reward for completed tasks and let him choose activity for a timed break before next activity, helps them shift gears so to speak, and then verbal reminders or cues when timer goes off its time to work at this activity, then break, reward etc. Sometimes something as simple as a drink of water at the fountain was enough, other times he would request to play for his 5-10min, i think they started out around 5 or so minutes and then worked down to no break required after awhile, a long slow process but worked. shawna. >From: " " <c-george@...> >Reply-egroups ><egroups> >Subject: Re: need help with transitions >Date: Wed, 17 Jan 2001 23:54:21 -0600 > >Hi, . Guest guest
If only we had pictures for a schedule when Elie was little. Make sure the pictures that you use are nice and BIG . Maybe 2x3 and not too many at one time. We have found them to be so great that now he goes to school and sets his schedule for the day-himself! When each activity is finished, he removes it from his (now that he is big) " Dayplanner " and puts it in an envelope. He also has a second line wherre his " preferred activities " (rewards) are lined up. the teacher decides how many activities he must complete to get a reward activity. He gets to pick which one. We also use a picture schedule at home for getting ready for school in the morning - only as a reminder as to what goes next.
