Poll info.....Since Jess (4.5 months) hasn't been seen by the 'specialist'

yet, these are just my conclusions.....I think Jess was (1 ) - born with the

preference to sleep to the right as she did this right from the beginning. I

remember thinking her head was very pointy at birth which I thought was

strange since she was born via c-section. (2)- She was a big baby 8lbs 6oz

ten days early. (3) - She slept about 22 hours per day for the first month

and a half and then at 8 weeks (4) - she started sleeping 10 - 12 hours per

night. I am unsure if she has torticollis. I didn't think so initially but

am beginning to suspect that she does. Jess rarely spent time on her back

during the day as she did not like to be on her back. So she was in a bouncy

seat and then walker (2 months) and then on her tummy a lot. She also has a

very active 2 year old brother so she wasn't SAFE on the floor for a long

time. I sure wish we could go back and know that all this sleeping in the

same undisturbed position that we thought was a blessing was actually hurting

her.....

was also a big girl 8lbs. 3oz. and colicky so she spent tons of time

in her bouncy seat/swing/car seat - Wish now I had known

better~but~combination of post partum sleep deprivation - and a child that

cried ALL night long - those 3 items were a Godsend...at least they were able

to calm her when we couldn't.!

Here is my list of symptoms/experiences that I think may have something to do with the plagiocephaly:

1) Esotopia(crossed eye)

2) Retained fluid in tort. side ear-until tubes at the age of One.

3) More than 25 % developmental delay in expressive language-not receptive

4) Twin 'A'- I think he had more stress on him since he was in the birth canal longer

5) Was in the NICU for a week-it seems everytime I visited him he was on his back facing the same direction.

6) Shy child-not sure if this has to do with the SO many procedures that he had to endure since birth-or if that's just the way he was born.I'm curious if others have children who have the same quiet nature.

7) Torticollis

Hi There!

I have a few things to add about . He doesn't seem to match many of these symptoms. But I will give you a bit of his history.

When I went for my ultrasound at 34 weeks the technician said his head was wider that it was long. He was born 2 weeks early. He was 7 lbs 2 oz. He does not have torticollis. But he did spend alot of time on his back because he hated to be on his tummy. Looking back at pictures in many of them he had his head to the right but he can move it the other way, I think he just got used to this position. His eyes are not crossed, he does not have any problems eating. He was slow to roll over (rolled over from tummy to back a few times at around 5 months) but at 8 months rolls over from tummy to back anytime you put him on his tummy. He still prefers to be on his back because he loves to kick (thanks to the Kick Start Gym). He does babble saying mamamamama and other sounds and he just started to blow bubbles. He started to sit well on his own at 7 months and is not crawling yet. I believe that he is not crawling yet or rolling from back to tummy because he doesn't like to be on his tummy and therefore has not motivation to be there. He has a mild temperment (although we are seeing some tempers when he can't get what he wants) but he is not shy and is a very happy baby.

I know I've babbled on but I thought since my experiences have been a bit different it might help with your list.

FYI, I set up a test database just to see how it worked... it's super easy (took about 2 minutes), but you can only have 10 items across and it doesn't average or total. So, the polls are probably the best place for these things, but maybe we'll have a use for the database section for something else sometime.

Great idea about correlating symptomology! Here's my list for :

1. Restricted intra-uterine growth environment (uterine band)

2. Prematurity (36 wks)due to spontaneous rupture of membranes

3. Low birth weight (5 lbs)

4. Vacuum extraction delivery

5. Respiratory Distress requiring mechanical ventilation (short term)

6. Hyperbilirubinemia requiring phototherapy

7. Extended stay in NICU (1 week)

8. Severe Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD)

9. Failure to thrive (he was a very difficult child to

feed...wouldn't take to nursing and bottle was very hard for

him...has never taken more than 4-5 oz per bottle)

10. Head circ. large (50th %) when compared to height (5%) and

weight (not even on the charts!)

11. subluxation of the cervical spine noted on CT scan done for

definitive diagnosis of plagiocephaly.

12. Scoliosis

13. Developmental delay in speech (expressive)

14. Very active and curious child!!!!

I didn't ever think to link a difficult pregnancy to this.

(although I'm not sure how much is really would affect the shape of

babies heads - but who knows!!!)

I wasn't on bed rest, but I did have to transfer at my job that involved

quite a bit of lifting, to some less strenuous duties. I bled from

16 wks straight thru to the end due to a large hemotoma on my placenta.

My son has tort and plagio and a couple of things I

haven't seen listed which he has (in addition to many

I noticed my child's left side does not seem to used as much as his right

side. (his head is flatter on the right side. Also we have

noticed his visual tracking on the left side is not as good. (he follows

an object with his eyes only so far and then his head just turns to follow

the object)just a few things we noticed.

I need from you are symptoms, conditions, experiences that you think may

have something to do with or be caused by (or be causing?) the positional

plagiocephaly and/or torticollis. Then, we'll be able to go down

the poll's list and click off what we or the child has experienced. Now,

if I were to get REAL scientific about this, I would draw up a duplicate

poll for the control group and have you all put in the experiences of a

child you know who is a similar age who does NOT suffer from positional

plagiocephaly. I also

want your opinion about whether you all should be able to "vote" in this

poll anonymously or not. Some questions may arise that you want to

answer, but don't want to cop to. And that's ok by me!! A little

anonymity never hurt anyone!
