Guest guest
The public should be afraid of vaccines, given recent history, as part of the learning process. Notwithstanding that fear, someone still may decide to be vaccinated, if they believe that to be appropriate. If fear comes from additional information, that is a good thing. "Scared Stiff: Worried In America," A Stossel Two-Part Special Report "Scared Stiff: Worried In America," A Stossel Two-Part SpecialReport, Airs Friday, February 23 On ABC News' "20/20"http://www.thefutoncritic.com/listings.aspx?id=20070220abc01Are you scared stiff? There's a lot to be scared about. Themedia warn us about terrorism, bird flu, vicious crime, cancer, globalwarming and much more. But are all worries created equal? Stosselexpands on his very first ABC TV special, "Are We Scaring You toDeath?," by looking at how we handle risks that face us today. Hefinds that what we worry about is often different from what's mostlikely to hurt us. Stossel's "Scared Stiff: Worried In America" airsas a special two-part "20/20," FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 23 (9:01-10:00 & 10:00-11:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.[Excerpt] Vaccines: Bobby Kennedy Jr. is one of many activistswho have blamed some vaccines for IQ loss, mental retardation andautism, among other things. Stossel looks at the debate and concludesthat activists and lawyers may be killing people by frightening thepublic about vaccines. Stossel's own daughter got whooping cough afterStossel's pediatrician failed to give her the final vaccination, having watched a "20/20" report that presented accusations about thewhooping cough vaccine. She recovered and appears on the program.Stossel tells lawyer McDowell: "You're part of the FearIndustrial Complex. You scare people and make money off it!" After apause, McDowell says, "True." He says it's "the American way...because of the litigation, they changed it."
Guest guest
> Stossel looks at the debate and concludes > that activists and lawyers may be killing people by frightening the > public about vaccines. I personally think this is a bogus claim. The masses are not yet frightened and declining vaccines. Those who choose to live their lives being told what to do without questioning it are still rolling their sleeves up and getting shots in droves. The people who are declining vaccines (in general and as has been researched and written about) are highly educated people...those who have critical thinking skills, who've been able to translate their knowledge into high income careers, who've been taught through their years of education to question everything, look deeper for the facts and draw their own conclusions. These are the people who are choosing not to vaccinate. Regardless of the media fear frenzy, those who are wise enough to do their own research on vaccines are finding information that produces valid concerns that alter behaviors and prompt them to stop vaccinations for themselves and their children. Some may be affected by what's said on TV. But my guess is the highly educated demographic has also done its research on the media and the inadequacy of health reporting and they are highly likely to be dismissive of health news as it is largely regurgitated pharma company press release information, information spouted from health depts which is based on published medical journal reports which we know are hugely influenced by pharma and cannot be trusted either. So scared stiff? Nah. Just informed and just choosing to say No.

Guest guest
I just called Stossel's assistant, Alisa Appel, to voice my displeasure about what would be broadcast tonight about vaccines and autism. She is just as smug and condescending as he is. She was obviously annoyed by my call, and told me to watch the show before I formed an opinion. Ha! Can you imagine, she insinuated I might actually learn something from the show. > > > > " Scared Stiff: Worried In America, " A Stossel Two-Part Special > > Report, Airs Friday, February 23 On ABC News' " 20/20 " > > > > http://www.thefutoncritic.com/listings.aspx?id=20070220abc01 > > > > Are you scared stiff? Guest guest
Why do they keep having to do these stupid shows? Why even do it? It only focuses attention on this issue. Guest guest
No, but Imus may be able to help. I wrote him an e-mail at msnbc about the show, although he doesn't read his email I'm sure maybe someone will forward it to him. Anyone know if Deirdre has an email address? She may even already know about the show through all of her contacts. Imus was talking about the 60 minutes crap yesterday and I know he said something about Deirdre calling CBS and the 60 mins show. Let's hope they stay with us Imus has a huge audience across the country and a lot of influential people watch and listen to his show. elevatordance <elevatordance@...> wrote: I guess Bob can't help us with getting equal time on NBC anymore. Guest guest
I wonder how sick his daughter got? I know kids can get *very* sick from pertussis. If it was as mild as my daughters' cases were, he dealt with a cold/bronchitis like condition for a few weeks. Why is that so outrageous? Not to mention his daughter still would have had about a 50/50 chance of getting it according to CDC's own data. Guest guest
I guess she's assuming that a few weeks worth of journalistic research is superior to your YEARS of immersion in the subject! For their arrogance, they should call Stossel's program " The Last Word with Stossel! " Give ME a break! (one of Stossel's favorite phrases, btw) I hope everyone floods their phone lines with complaints! Guest guest
A-CHAMP sent out the alert at around noon time. They will send another one after the show airs. The promotional material for the show is inflammatory in itself, regardless of whether the show is balanced as claimed by Alisa Appel.
