Guest guest
We doubled JJ's depakote this week. And boy is he eating!!! Looked it up in the drug book I have and sure enough weight gain is a side effect. He lost 10 pounds when we started Gluten Free so he cam afford to gain. & Garry, parents of (10 ds), (9 ds/g-tube), JJ (6 ds/autism/celiac), (6 ds), and Esther (3 ds). All adopted. She was also skinny before the drug - typical heart baby - but not anymore!! Then she gained more on Risperdal. Now she's considered to be heavy for her height. Her docs are somewhat concerned about her weight now, so we are limiting her intake now. She doesn't really eat that much, so it's difficult to cut her calories back anymore. We'd have to eliminate the occasional trips to Mickey Ds, which are one of her greatest pleasures in life - I just can't do it! Just watch out because the weight can really add up with depakote, risperdal, etc. and before you know it your skinny kid is not so skinny anymore. Good luck, Maureen

Guest guest
Whar we are trying with the diet - since Elie cannot relate to decreased amounts of food, is to limit WHAT he eats. our tricks are these - He gets ice cream every day. BUT we use no fat no sugar ice cream. Also, he gets 1/4 cup - we use Japanese tea cups. He can have his 2 hamburgers at McD when he earns them, but we order a kid's meal and an extra plain burger. The fries and the burgers are the BIGGEST problem so we have reduced the sze. He gets the small diet drink (we limit phosoric acid now that we understand what that does to teeth) Elie really doesn't notice the difference. We also make sure that in lieu of seconds at school he now gets seconds on fruit. But it isn't helping with the Risperdal gain. We have even gone to low fat peanut butter and skimp the amount in his daily sandwich. Life is cruel! <sum>e see the new shrinkologist on Monday. Maybe he will have an idea that won't turn my kid into the crazy wild man. Guest guest
I must have missed the Handwriting Without Tears post. That's what I'm using with . He's doing great. Actually we didn't get all the way through printing, when his therapist suggested cursive. She said every time the pencil left the paper, it was a chance to lose focus, and with cursive, the pencil left the paper less often.
