Guest guest
Hello Everyone, I went to pick Brook up from school the other day to take him to his pediatrician for his ears and his teacher asked me to try and buy something called talking frames. Apparently it's a picture frame, and it has sound capability, she said I could find it at Target or Walmart. Anyway Target doesn't have it. Has anyone heard of this? She wants to use it as a communication device. Thanks, Marisa
Guest guest
Marissa, Radio Shack has them (if there is one in your area). They are small; pocket-size frames with a button. You record a short message and push the button to hear it. My husband put two of them in a box, raised the button and had our older son record " yes " and " no " into them. We labeled by color used the box as an augmentative device so could make a choice. Terry
Guest guest
, I think he just built something....it was a while ago and I can't remember exactly. It was wider at the top than the bottom...kind of " sloped " from top to bottom - does that make sense? It was big enough for to not have a problem seeing it....he has difficulty with farsightedness and won't wear his glasses. That's why we didn't use the picture frames by themselves..they are small and the button is really small. I remember that my husband used plastic floor protecters you put on kitchen chair legs to make the buttons large enough for to find and use them easily. I think the box was just large enough to accommodate both of the frames and whatever he used to connect the buttons on the outside to the buttons on the inside. One piece of advice for anybody thinking of using a device that you record a voice into.....have someone that the child won't identify do the recording. Otherwise, they hear a voice coming from the box and it's Mom's or Dad's or whoever's which can make it harder for them to understand what they are supposed to do with it. In other words, it will act as their voice....if they recognize the voice, they know it isn't their's. I hope that made sense. If you want more info on how my husband made the box, I will ask him to write it out when he gets home from work. Hope this helps. Guest guest
tones catalogue has them... individual frames or photo albums. Run $35 and $45 respectively. I just brought the album for our in-laws who live across the country. Caroline
Guest guest
Terry, This is a great idea. What kind of box did your hubby use? & Garry, parents of (10 ds), (9 today ds/g-tube), JJ (6 ds/autism/celiac), (6 ds), and Esther (3 ds). All adopted. Guest guest
Marisa, I have a picture frame that has my grandbaby's voice recorded on it and has her picture in the frame. But the recording only lasts 10 seconds! That's probably not what you're talking about, but I got it at Radio Shack. They might have what you are talking about. ita
