Is it the same with the Autistic classes? Gail
Guest guest
Most of the kids in the Special Day classes and also the regular classes that have any services are usually on the same track so their services remain un interrupted. Like Speech Therapy, O.T., etc. It happens to be one of the better tracks too. We're off August, December & April. It makes it a little hard for me since I work at a different school and my school is on Traditional year having the entire summer off. I have to get Respite for on the months he's off school, while I'm at work. I use Regional Center for that which they kind of frown on. They don't consider it Respite, but I SURE DO. Guest guest
Our district also has intersession during the months off if you want to send your child to school for two of the 4 weeks off. It works out pretty well and in JHS they don't change classrooms when they come back which is so much better and less confusing. I don't know if it's the same for the included classrooms though. Guest guest
and Gail, For us, this year round thing is not good. I thought I would love it. But, the 3 week breaks are not enough to go to a day camp, so he is home for 3 long weeks. We get little or no school work done during that time. In Las Vegas, there are 5 " tracks " . Each on is a 9-12 week on, 3 week off schedule. The only time EVERYONE is out off is Christmas, Easter and for these 3 weeks in the summer. So, Matt got off school on Aug 7th, and goes back on Aug 28, until October 30, then off until November 27, on for 3 weeks, then off for 2 week for Christmas, then on Jan 2 untilMarch 5, off 3 weeks, on 2 weeks, off 1 week for Easter, on April 16 until June 22, off 3 weeks, on July 16 till August 10 (4 weeks).. Then off until the first day of the next school year. Each track is on a different schedule, and someone is ALWAYS off. ALso, in our school, there are some kids who dont' have a real classroom. They are what they call " floaters " . Every 3 weeks, when some track goes on break, they move to that classroom, because the classroomt they have been have kids coming back from break. So, those poor kids dont' ever have a stable anything! I just cant' imagine! THey know better than to put Matt in a class like that! I thought I would really like the year round, but I much prefer the 9 month schedule with day camp in the summer. LOL I would be totally confused. I guess I wouldn't like that after all! LOL It's a wonder the kids can learn anything...especially the " floaters. " Just boggles my mind to think that they expect kids to learn under the conditions they are giving them. Now, what about the teachers? Do the same teachers teach year round? With homeschooling, I have 11 weeks in each quater as I allow 2 weeks off each quarter. We may or may not take it all at once. Sometimes we just take a day off for fun or go shopping and out for lunch. Once we saved the 2 weeks from the first quarter and took the whole month of Dec. off. Baked lots of cookies, made candy and just enjoyed the holidays. Ahhh, the freedom of homeschooling! LOL Yeah, right! Kids around 24/7, pressure from the district, self imposed pressure to do a good job, school supplies all over the place, glue-glitter and paint in the carpet.....yeh, the freedom of homeschooling! In the time that he is off does he lose any gains that he has made? That must be really hard when you are trying to work too. Aren't we just AMAZING PEOPLE?!!!! Guest guest
He does lose some of the things he's gained in O.T. I find. There was a time I was told, I hadn't seen it, that he could tie his shoe lace. I really think the OT was confusing him with someone else. There are good things to year round, but from a working standpoint, I like having the whole summer off. It was nice on year round, but when I finally got into the swing of being off and finally got relaxed, it was time to go back. I just got a call from the OT asking if I wanted to continue 's OT for the month he's off. I was pretty impressed with her committment. With all he's going through now, I'm going to give him a break for the next few weeks left.
