Guest guest
Joan, I can really feel for you and ANDY!! We planned from April on with constant calls, several meetings with the new S/D, copies of Elie's IEP, supportive letters of his needs from his teacher of the last 3 years. Nothing has helped. Today - Day six of school, I was asked to come to a meeting where the teachers attempted to show me why Elie is in the " wrong placement " . that his refusal to follow " the rules " of the voacational part of the day, refusal to do his " academic work " meant that he should be moved to a " less challenging " environment. The school work I was shown was work he could easily do had it been in a format he was used to. He had no slant board, the work was handwritten, not wok shets, the voacational setting is nisy and onfusing, and worst of all - after four months of my sharing his needs, they still had not agreed on the necessity of an aide!! Well,NOW they begin to look for an aid! I am disgusted. Meanwhile, the school is feeding into his need for negative attention by carrying him when he refuses to transition!! It takes three people to carry his 160 lbs. They don't understand that he needs to be ignored until he complies with requests. On top of all this, since he is now a " young adult " in h/s, the first thing taken away was his mirror and his drink cup. this is called extinguishing unhealthy work behaviors. And then they want him to comply with their wishes??? People are weird. Our kids have more sense than the professionals we entust our children to. Guest guest
I learned that the best way to get things resolved quickly is to pull your child. When was being mentally abused (singled out and made fun of in front of the whole class by the teacher), I just said we had a problem, needed a meeting, and would NOT be returning to that school until it was resolved, and he WOULD NOT go back to that teacher. I didn't even say why. This was on Thursday morning. Friday we had a meeting and other arrangements were made. He transferred to another school. That's crappy. I know that in our district aides can be very difficult to come by and that our schools are often still hiring right up to the wire and even after school has begun. Also aides around here are often newly degreed teachers who are looking for a classroom position and are working as aides until they can find jobs as teachers. Our school typically hires several aides over the summer and then loses about half of them by the first day of school because they get teaching jobs in other districts. I don't know if the situation is similar in your district, but I wonder if Max really did exist but found a teaching position. They should certainly be forthcoming with you about what is going on and not be so mysterious. It seems to me they owe you more of an explanation before the 15th about what happened to Max, what they are doing to replace him, and what they intend to do to meet Andy's needs in the meantime. Is there any administrator in Andy's building who could answer these questions for you sooner? <<When is it that Andy gets a good year?? >> I'm so sorry that Andy's year is getting off on the wrong foot and that you have to have these problems every year. I hope a qualified aide is found for him very soon. Thank God Andy has a mom like you to advocate for him and be there for him when the school is letting him down. It's amazing that these supposedly qualified professionals demonstrate so little common sense! Sounds like they need to have a behavior specialist come in and explain/illustrate some very basic principles to them. Like I said to Joan about Andy, thank goodness Elie has a wonderful mother like you to advocate for him. Hang in there, Maureen

He just sounds like the aides PHilly hires. Or so I've heard. What a bummer Joan!!!! I sure hope they get someone asap. Donna
