There are so many ways our kids can be supported in a regular ed classroom if educators would just get more creative and put in the effort. The special ed teachers need to be willing to let go more and work with the reg ed teachers. It really isn't so difficult...the hard part is just changing the way services have traditionally been delivered. BTW, Gene is heading for camp in two hours for the week. His first time. Haven't cried today, but did last night. This is not a camp for kids with disabilities, but rather a reg camp that sets aside some places for kids with disabitlies. They are supposed to be exeptional. Gene will have his own personal helper which makes me feel alot better. . Lauri
Guest guest
Congratulations, Leah! That is very good news! Give 'em heck on Wednesday! Sounds like you're well on the way to getting what's best for Ashton for now. Hope camp week goes well for both of you. Enjoy! Guest guest
Leah, You go girl!!!!! LOL I bet you are having a bitter sweet day huh? Must be elated over the school news and so sad and missing Miss Ashton! Guess I will be going to battle over Seth's fall aide. That old red tape is stuck again and there are a choice of four aides for him, because of seniority. Only one is acceptable to both me and his teacher. If she doesn't get the job, the teacher said she will fight along side me and has already made it clear to her supervisor that the other three are not welcome in her room! I should know by next week who was chosen. Not anywhere near the battle you have been in, and still are, but very big to me! LOL Congrats Leah! Now, a good book, cowboy koolaid, the pool....gosh, have the time of your life! (even if it isn't Paris)! Gail

Guest guest
Maureen, Thanks for your note. Gene just did not want to go to camp. All week when I read him a social story about it, he would shout " No Camping!!! " Today, on the way there, he kept indicating he wanted the car to go back " this way " which was home. When we got there, his couselor Josh was so relaxed and positive. Made me feel better. Everyone who approached Gene would get a " NO!!! " . He really didn't want to do what we all wanted him to do. Finally, we decided Gene and Josh would take a golf cart up to the cabin. I could hear Gene screaming about that across the field. Later, I heard he actually jumped off the cart but Josh was cool and he jumped off too and eventually got him back on. We took a trolley ride up to his camp and there he and Josh were sitting in the golf cart. Gene didn't want to get out!!!...but Josh was cool and said, well, we may be sitting her for awhile. Gene was all relaxed and leaning against Josh. He seemed quiet and tired. I think he had finally realized he was going to stay and decided to settle down and make the best of it. On the way home, I wondered, did we do the right thing to make him go? But if we didn't, when would he every get away from us? I think he really needs a break from us, just as we need a little respite. It is a real feeling of guilt I am suffering. Oh, well, now I am going to have some wine and try to concentrate on something else. Lauri

Guest guest
GAIL, WOW!! i am so surprised you have a teacher that is willing to fight with you and NOT against you!!!!!!!lmao i hope you get the good aide and throw the other three to the side..... i am so used to red tape, i wouldnt know what clear is if it hit me in the head.....llmao take care adn prayers on your school battle......leah-dreaming of paris ps------another idea i did for ashton when in preschool, is take a small keychain but the kind that looks like silver beads????hope this makes sense, and contact paper index cards i had cut in half, so they are small and put velcro on them.... then when seth goes to school, he can velcro the menu he has chosen for the day or if they have a reward system, he can stick the prizes pictures he chooses on there....and if you put velcro over the contact picture they last forever........ also can put simple pictures, like the colors, bathroom, eat, and so on......ashton has used hers forever......i sent her book to camp i made and they want to keep it.....heheh NOT!!!!! if you need some pictures of real live things, i have them on a cd called picture this i can send them to you and you can download them. i have already been making ashotn new ones, like teacher(picture of real teacher in classroom), chalkboard, school(real picture), playground, bathroom, ect ect ect...heheh leah
