Here in Hawaii, I get $100 reimbursement for respite. I have to find my own

worker (or baby-sitter) and have to pay at least $5.15 an hour, but she will go

as high as $10. But at $10 an hour, that's only 10 hours.

I'm going to have to move to California. Is all this respite care provided by

someone, or is this a reimbursement like me? I find it so hard to find someone

I can trust to watch that we are lucky to use 10 of our 19 hours a month.

I'm getting ready to file July's statement and it has a whopping grand total of

an hour and a half! WHAT'S RESPITE??

Hi Jeannie,

I'm in Corona California and currently receiving 384 hours of Respite a year

to use as I need it and I got Medical through a waiver where they only look

at his income (0). They will fund camp, conferences and got my son a

communication device. I have diaper service providers since my son is

incontinent (did I spell that or even pronounce that right?) and right now

working on getting an allowance for film since he has been communicating in

pictures (sticker film). They come with me to IEP meetings and my latest

case worker has been a big help in the field of Autism. I know I'm

forgetting alot and I'm sure I could get other services as I need them. I've

been turned down for some things and then got them when I appealed. Where in

California are you?

what is sticker film? Wow, how do you get that much respite? Do you need to

find your own help, or do they provide it? I just requested a worker. I

think I will be able to use the nurse for only 8 hours a month though.

We live in Simi Valley, Ventura County. Our Regional Center is Tri-Counties

Regional Center.

will be getting a dental grant to have his teeth examined and cleaned

under anaesthesia as he can't/won't tolerate sitting quietly in a regular

dentist's chair while they do unspeakable things to his mouth! We've tried

tranquilizers and all sorts of behavior mod, but he'll have to be out for

this if it is to be effective. We also get the services of an excellent

psychologist who is MAtthew's behavior specialist. Last, and perhaps most

important, we get 24 hours a month of respite -- wish we could get more....

We exchanged some of those hours for a week long summer camp that

went to this summer, and I realized how much I NEED more respite for longer

periods of time than just the usual few hours here and there. That's what we

get. What do you get?

we are in Huntington Beach. I think we got 25 hours of respite a

month before Mark was placed out of our home. I hope he gets to keep his

CalOptima as DH does not get health benefits for 6 months when he starts his

new job on Monday. Thanks

We have to find our own provider for the respite, I feel better doing it that

way. It is hard to find someone you can trust, I know! My son is nonverbal,

but my 9 yr old daughter can talk! Infact she never shuts up! Must be a

girl thing I know Steph would say something if things went wrong...I

hope at least...no, she would!

We used to get 25 hours a month. Where did your son go to camp at? Next

year hopefully we can send Mark. Mark is 10, think I have forgotten to add

that to my numerous postings! You all are great! Thanks for all the input~

Our respite is either funded directly to you as care provider or to an agency

for respite. I get Nursing care (LVN) because of medical problems has

had and have had the same nurse for 7 years. I don't even call the agency

anymore, I work out my schedule with her. This is rare though and they

frown on it, but we have had so many problems with nurses not showing up or

canceling that they don't give me a hard time about it anymore. It really is

hard to find someone you can trust even through an agency and even then I

insist on meeting the person first before they ever step foot in my house.

gets MediCal as a secondary to my DH's insurance. When he started his

new job we went through the same thing and the MediCal became primary with a

phone call and proof of the insurance change. I was scared to death though.

It worked out.

We got Behavior Therapy through Regional Center. This guy was pretty good.

He came out to the house weekly and worked on whatever we were having

problems with. The big thing was going shoppping. An absolute nightmare.

He would come shopping and worked with through all his issues in the

stores and how to deal with each one. He went to school and worked with

's aide and teacher to show them how to deal with different issues.

Unfortunately, the school wasn't as receptive and fought him all the way.

When they finally gave in and worked with the guy, they were able to handle

alot better. Shopping is no longer a nightmare.

My respite was 24hrs a month because of all the past medical issues and got

the increase with the Autism diagnosis because the Psyh from Regional Center

just happened to be on the phone while threw the new puppy over the 6

foot fence into the alley. I freaked out, the puppy was squealing so loud

she could hear it on the phone and then started screaming I started

screaming and she figured I needed all the help I could get. (This was

before medication) Hey, I'm not complaining.

Sticker film is for the instant sticker camera made by Polaroid. It take

instant snap shots @1-1/2 " with a peel off backing to attatch to anything.

We've made a communication book for with them. I take it everywhere.

For Respite I use an agency that is a Regional Center provider. They have a

listing of who the use that is reputable.

A friend of mine was paid for respite to be used to help offset with daycare.

(If you can find a daycare that will take your child) Her child is autistic

and very high functioning (Asbergers). It didn't pay for all of it but it

helped alot.

Hi! Just saw that you are in Simi Valley. That is where my husband Kerry is

from. We will be visiting his family in mid september. Actually we are

coming to UCLA to have tested for ASD.We would love to meet you and
