Jill,

Thank you for your insightful (as always) post about and respite.

I've also started thinking about getting my act together regarding a will,

special needs trust, and, hardest of all, the perfect guardians (in *this*

country) for my kids. This may be more on my mind lately as my cholesterol

level tops even yours: I was horrified to discover that for someone

masquerading as a fairly slim, athletic person, my total cholesterol is 228.

I've asked for the fasting, more accurate breakdown test because, obviously

there's something wrong with the way *they* did the testing!

Couldn't be that I've been pulling midnight cookie raids to the kitchen,

could it? Trouble is, I have no concept of eating one or two cookies. I

inhale about 6 at a time before they touch sides.

Time to start buying the kind that I really, really hate.

Love,

Jacqui

Garry is an ice cream person! Like a 1/2 callon a night!!! His cholesterol

was every bit as high as yours. He cut out having it and it made a real

difference. His numbers went down in 6 months, and in the next 6 months it

was befow 190. He still eats ice cream about a 1/2 galon a month. The kids

get dessert 1 night and he makes the rest last a few days.

Getting the kind you don't like doesn't work here. If they are too gross

even the kids won't eat them!

& Garry, parents of (9), (8), JJ (6), (5), and

Esther (3). All adopted & with Down Syndrome.

We started last year about this time putting together a will, trust fund

etc etc for the kids. Guess what it is not done yet. Can you believe

it. We have money stuck into and everything but to some degree felt

miss lead as the women who does this said she had experience with

special needs trust and then I did not hear from her for sometime and

when I finally did she told me she had found out and learned about some

great information. My thoughts were that I thought you knew this

stuff. Why is it we many times do not speak our minds? Anyway the

hardest thing is to find, decide on who or name guardians. I do not

want my children split up and they need to stay together. I was reading

the other day in a magazine, I think it was Money, that the reason most

parents do not do wills is because they are not sure who to choose as

guardians. The next thought was: Well if you are having a hard time

and if the court had to do it instead then think of the hard time they

will have too. Think about it. I know I did. R.

PS Being a Medical Technologist and with regard to cholesterol. The

cholesterol test alone is only one of the fats and it's value is not

dependant on fasting. However if you were to do a whole Lipid Profile

(Cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL (the good fat), LDL (the bad fat), the

VLDL and a CHOL/HDL ratio then you definately want to do at least an 8

hour fast. Cholesterol levels can also a hereditary thing. I had a

friend in Colorado who was very slim, very athelic and for the most part

vegiterian and her chol. ran around 260's. Diet and exercise are

usually the first choice to correct a high cholesterol and high fats

(Except HDL you want high) however that may not always be the answer

and that is why we now have the drugs Lipitor and Lescol. Good luck I

fight the battle myself but I know mine is lack of exercise and too much

weight and also hitting menopause.

Ain't life fun. R.

Good point. We had picked DH's sister and hubby ages ago, pre Maddie, to

raise our kids if anything happened to us. WE love them and think they're

wonderful parents, but Maddie is a different ball game. We've set up a trust

and have changed it so DH " s brother and wife get our kids now. Plenty of

insurance money, so that wasn't the issue. DH's brother and wife are truly

100% accepting of Maddie and never question her behavior. My oldest is now

18 and the others are coming up behind him, so if Duff and I can just hold

on.....................LOLOL

Seriously though, it's a tough topic to discuss, but you're right . One

that is truly necessary!!
