Community disaster planning is an extraordinarily good idea. Natural disasters can occur anywhere and at any time. Having a plan to deal with food shortages, power outages, and increased healthcare requirements is essential for every city and town. But FOWL! goes far beyond encouraging public planning.

FOWL! affirms the urgency of joining together by pulling together diverse activist groups—environmentalists, animal rights proponents, vaccine awareness groups, anti-war groups and those working to halt the use of genetically modified food. Each of these hard working, dedicated alliances are, in their own ways, similar to the five blind men trying to describe an elephant. Although there are many versions to this fable, the story goes like this:

A group of blind men once heard that an extraordinary beast called an elephant had been brought into their village. Resolved to obtain a picture, they put to use the only tool they had: They used their hands to feel the beast. As the three community leaders approached the animal to learn more, one touched its leg, the other a tusk, the third an ear. Believing they knew what the elephant looked like, they returned to their clan to share the news. But when asked to share what they had learned, each persons description varied widely.

The one who had felt the leg maintained that the elephant was a pillar, extremely rough to the touch, and yet strangely soft. The one who had caught hold of the tusk refuted this description. Describing the elephant as hard and smooth like a metal post, he proclaimed there was nothing soft or rough about it. The third who had held the ear in his hands said that the elephant was both soft and rough, but was neither a pillar nor a post. His description was that an elephant looked like a broad, thick piece of leather. Each was right to a certain degree; each person communicated the part of the elephant that was in his experience. But none came close to describing—or comprehending—the entire elephant.

Activism occurs much the same way. Each group is intensely focused on their particular part of the elephant. This is not a criticism. Because the issues are complex, funds are often tight, and the number of people doing the day-to-day work is often small, a singular focus is necessary. However, the issues surrounding the bird flu offer a portal for seemingly different groups to unite. FOWL! grasps an appreciation for the “whole elephant.â€

Environmentalists will find they have a lot in common with those who oppose vaccines. People fighting for the rights of farm animals will learn they have unexpected similarities with those fighting to stop the war. Veterans and citizens struggling for compensation due to dioxin and Agent Orange poisoning will find surprising parallels with those engaged in the battle to stop the use of genetically modified foods.

Its all the same elephant. We're all in this together.

The pharma-chemical-agribusiness giants are eliminating our choices, contaminating our food, destroying our health and poisoning our planet. What will the next 20 years look like? What will remain for your children and grandchildren? Distinctions and differences will remain, but the time is now to join together with the focus on unity. Strength comes in numbers, and my hope is that millions will join forces through information gleaned from FOWL! that will subjugate this huge beast while there is still time to make a difference.
