Guest guest
I attended a lecture by Isabelle Rapin where she said that there has been no increase in the incidence of autism, and that in 2005 Geraldine Dawson discovered that kids do in fact develop normally for a time but then regress for some mysterious, but probably genetic, reason. With such trenchant observers on the job no doubt a cure for autism is just around the corner. > > > > > > > > I'll ask the " authorities " on this list: how worthy a charity > is > > OAR- > > > > Organization for Autism Research? > > > > > > > > Thanks, > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
You know what? I would defend her anyday. She was the FIRST back in 1968 to do a study on the brain tissue of an autistic. Without her, we would not even be in a place where we could even discuss the possibilities of other treatments. I have her direct line to her office. She is the ONLY one who saw my son without putting me on a waiting list, have enough experience to look at him, no EEGS - I didn't want any of that crap - and told me whether he had tourette's or movement disorder of autism. That to me, makes her okay in my book. BIOMEDICAL IS NOT THE ONLY TREATMENT APPROACH OUT THERE!!!! Even if it was - you would still need educational and behavioral approaches to support the child while going through the biomedical treatments. > > > > > > > > > > I'll ask the " authorities " on this list: how worthy a > charity > > is > > > OAR- > > > > > Organization for Autism Research? > > > > > > > > > > Thanks, > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
Sorry, but she is a neurologist. If she didn’t do an EEG, she is a bad neurologist, despite what you wanted. Its just part of the job and it’s silly to ask a neuro not to do an EEG. She is not an educational or behavioral therapist or anything like that. She is a neuro, a brain doc. And given her list of papers, she isn’t someone I’d ever want on my kid’s case. Guest guest
I would agree about needing an EEG for most symptoms. However, I knew that with her experience she would know right away what I was needing to know. I too am in the medical field and I basically needed an opinion to validate what I was seeing. I did not want an EEG or any other tests done at that time. So she went with what I had asked for. We have no specialists in the area of NY I live in. We have to travel for hours and hours to get in anywhere. There are waiting lists all over. She too has one. My son has been to the doctor's office maybe 5 times in his life after the age of 2. I have never gone for any medical illness whatsoever. I'm confident in my knowledge and my needs for my son, so for me to seek someone out to ask an opinion, first of all, is my own right and does not have to be cleared with anyone. I never said anything on this board that has been mean-spirited, spiteful, resentful, hateful, or narrow-minded about any doctor or treatment or approach, nor autism organization for that matter. So, I'm not too sure where your reply or anyone else's is coming from. > > > > > > > > > > > > I'll ask the " authorities " on this list: how worthy a > > charity > > > is > > > > OAR- > > > > > > Organization for Autism Research? > > > > > > > > > > > > Thanks, > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
Biomedical treatment, working in tandem with the behavioral approaches, language approaches, etc. is the whole package. We sometimes lose sight of that. Got have some of that ABA. It really does work. Re: OAR-Isabelle Rapin You know what? I would defend her anyday. Guest guest
Sally, have you gone to any of the DAN or MiniDAN conferences? Or Autism One? There's a whole new world of promise that you can explore...that is doing wonderful things for children without attention drugs. It's not quackery or " alternative " medicine. It's real medicine based on biomedical research. If you draw the analogy that our children's minds are like computers... biomed fixes the hardware while therapies like ABA, speech, etc. load in the " software. " Both are important. But masking the symptoms with pharmaceuticals without trying to correct the problems internally... is looking backwards. We know more today. Respectfully, you're consulting the wrong doctors.
Guest guest
I first consulted with Dr. Rimland back in 1995. I went to the very first DAN conference, and have followed it since then. I never said I used attention drugs for my son, or what type of drugs at all. Respectfully, as far as what doctors I consult is my business and no one elses. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > I'll ask the " authorities " on this list: how worthy a > > > charity > > > > is > > > > > OAR- > > > > > > > Organization for Autism Research? > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Thanks, > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
Biomedical may not be the only approach, but a lot of children have benefited and come a lot farther, faster than if they didn't do bio-medical alongside behavioral therapy. No amount of behavioral therapy will remove mercury from the body. You need to treat the WHOLE child. Just my 2 cents. Beth Re: OAR-Isabelle Rapin You know what? I would defend her anyday. Guest guest
Your'e right, but I never said use just behavioral therapy. Guest guest
Okay, I missed the last line and quit reading after the caps. We're on the same page on this one. But if what said about Isabelle Rapin is right, then I find that quite disturbing. Re: OAR-Isabelle Rapin Your'e right, but I never said use just behavioral therapy. Guest guest
Actually she is one of the " bad guys " to those on this list. She was even at Simpsonwood. But no matter what, she was a pioneer. Without pioneers we wouldn't be as far as we are now. To most of us, that's not far enough and I agree. However, I will state again, that I chose to go to her because I did not want an EEG done and she agreed to see him just to see what was happening. It was very visible what my son was doing. You don't need an EEG to figure out the difference between tourettes and movement disorder of autism. I really resented being told by some on this list that I went to a bad neurologist, I shouldn't go to her, all the way to the extreme that I shouldn't have my son on stimulants - when I never said I had him on those and in fact never said if he was on meds or not. I found that some of those opinions really crossed the line over to telling me what to do personally with my own son. Being passionate about a therapy should never cross over into zealousness, which I am not saying you do, but there are some on here who do live by that code. Thanks Beth! > > > > > > > > > > > > > > I'll ask the " authorities " on this list: how worthy a > > > charity > > > > is > > > > > OAR- > > > > > > > Organization for Autism Research? > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Thanks, > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > ---------------------------------------------------------- > ----------- > > > > > > No virus found in this incoming message. > > Checked by AVG Free Edition. > > Version: 7.1.405 / Virus Database: 268.12.6/453 - Release Date: > 9/20/2006 > > > > > > > > > ------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------- > > > No virus found in this incoming message. > Checked by AVG Free Edition. > Version: 7.1.405 / Virus Database: 268.12.8/455 - Release Date: 9/22/2006 >

Guest guest
Because I was asked if I had attended any of the DAN conferences or if I was aware of the newer treatments available and I was told I was consulting the wrong doctors. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > I'll ask the " authorities " on this list: how worthy a > > > > charity > > > > > is > > > > > > OAR- > > > > > > > > Organization for Autism Research? > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Thanks, > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > ------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------- > > > No virus found in this incoming message. > Checked by AVG Free Edition. > Version: 7.1.405 / Virus Database: 268.12.8/455 - Release Date: 9/22/2006 >
