So I just read the email that bashes Autism speaks for not spending money on treatment research and this is posted. Which is it Lenny? Let's not waste time bashing Autism speaks. Lets figure out how to coax them into spending their gazillion dollars on stuff that could really help the community. Forget about what NAAR was before. NAAR is done. I am not in favor of " bashing " per se, so there I agree with you, but I

think vocal constructive criticism is always appropriate. Perhaps the

criticism in sinking in, as reflected in this lone GI conference. Would

be interesting to see if the prevailing view at the conference was that

gastroenterological problems in children with " autism " is merely

" comorbid " to the " autism. " That view is not very helpful - almost

suggests that our kids intestines reside in some out of the body place.

That has been the view heretofore among organizations outside of DAN!

(like ATN) that have begun looking at the GI problems.

I should add that when one or two organizations dominate the resources

of the community and commans the exclusive attention of the public

through superior media access, one conference is not fully redeeming.

And in these circumstances community criticism is necessary. After all,

to whom are these organizations accountable? Their donors? Or to the

community of parents and children who are affected. I would say the

latter because it is in their (our) name that the money is solicited

and accepted.

That being said, I am all for methods of coaxing rather than bashing,

but don't be so sure about who or what is driving the bus. That picture

is not so clear.

I did write a piece that suggested that people who give money to AS

for research should earmark it for biomedical treatment research. I

also suggested that AS spend more attention on biomedical treatment

since they themselves use it for their children. Did you miss that, too?

a reminder of which direction Bob needs to steer the bus towards.

And let me add….damn, so far it has been a LONG bus ride….maybe Bob

W. lost his directions and needs Lenny to read the map for him.

Anytime someone puts themselves in a “leadership

role” you have to be prepared and able to receive criticism/remarks/expectations

from those you want to represent. That leader needs to be a responsible

individual who is able to respond. I don’t think all the coaxing

in the world from parents will work if Bob W’s own grandson’s life does

not put him in a crisis mode and motivate him to spend the gazillion dollars to

really make a difference now…. not years from now. I don’t

know if AS knows what’swhat, but Bob W. knows exactly what’s what.

Whatever it takes to stand up for our kids, is whatever it takes. Do

you see anyone else out there with the reach of the Schafer Autism

Report willing to stick their necks out and make such public

statements willing to criticize the status quo, be they outside or

inside our community? Cynical bashing is easy to do, but finding a

frame of constructive criticism takes work, earned wisdom and some

risks. Criticism must be done in a way that doesn't tarnish organized

autism in general. Whatever gets said or done must be done in a way

that continues to foster the support of the general community to our

efforts.

This is risky business because myself, my son and my family can draw

heat from both inside and outside our community that may not do well

to support us as a family in the short term -- reactions can be hard

and swift -- but I believe is key to our survival in the longer term.

There is also the risk that I may be wrong on some things. It would

be easier to say nothing.

Part of the risk is that some people will intentionally

mis-characterize our words in order to spin their interpretation of

events. Some will unintentionally mis-characterize our words simply

because there is a wide range of reading comprehension skills amongst

readers. In either instance, it warrants having the record set

straight especially if the source is percieved friendly and credible.

This " old film " of corrections will be made as often as necessary. It

is a drag, but it is to be expected.

I can suggest you offer words of support when you see others standing

up for what's right, if that is your inclination, and try to get used

to the correction reruns; it comes with the territory of politics.

Wasn't trying to stir up this much dust, just venting. I was viewing the GI conference as a positve step and trying to be optimistic about the future benefit of Autism speaks. They have more money than God and need ways to spend it so I feel strongly that with the right groups having discussions with them, the right research will be encouraged.
