I’m sorry. I know in light of

Kirby’s post, we’ve all lost sight of the fact that our biggest

champions – Burton and Weldon – are (shock) Republicans, but we have

people in place to write a real bill. But no matter how good of a bill they

write, it won’t mean anything without parents getting INFORMED and

INVOLVED. No more sitting on our asses waiting for “them” to do it

and let us know what to do. We all need to get more informed about the bill,

laws, process and actually DO SOMETHING. If you don’t want to trust the

future to the likes of CAN and NAAR then you are going to have to start reading

and get involved. Go to your local reps and explain it all to them, go to your

state capitol and sing it there, show up in DC and shout it there. There is no

other way. Unless you trust the CDC, NIH, NAAR, ASA, CAN etc to take care of

your child’s future for you.

In my view Sen. Santorum was a false champion, not by any means a

saviour. Two real champions were just reelected: Senators Lieberman and

Stabenow.

Remember, Dodd was a cosponsor of the Combating Autism Act and

made the clearest statement in the CAA colloquy about vaccines and

thimerosal. Santorum did not make a similar unequivocal and clear

statement on the colloquy. He hedged, setting up Enzi, who proceeded to

endorse the 2004 IOM report. Santorum was not an unequivocally clear

and forthright voice for our kids. Dodd is better, and Lieberman and

Stabenow, also Lautenberg and a number of others are better. If the

Dems have a majority in the Senate we will have something to work with.

In the House it is much more problematic. Almost certainly will have a

Dem majority, which means Henry Waxman, Dem of California becomes Chair

of the Govt Reform Committe - he is not a friend to vaccine injured

children except on legal liability issues.

Both Burton and Weldon will be reelected so they remain there for our

kids.

That's right, . Thanks for pointing this out. Enzi strung us along

and then double-crossed us. Sharing information with Enzi was like

feeding our secrets to the enemy. Parents should learn learn a painful

lesson from that exercise. Can't trust wolves in sheep's clothing.

Enzi also supported insurance legislation that would preempt insurance

coverage mandates in the states, including those for children with

autism. Enzi: A real champion for our kids? Not. Same thing with Frist

- what could any parent of a vaccine-injured parent expect from him?

Exactly what we have gotten - less than nothing. At least Frist is

gone, too.

Well said, Holly (writing this watching Santorum's concession speech)

Parents need to do it for themselves and not let powerful organizations

dictate the agenda. If we can partner with them, fine, but the rank and

file parents need to organize themselves and find their own voice, not

a pr voice manufactured by well-paid public relations firms.

And, Holly, you are so right, now we may have a chance to have greater

influence because our friends in Congress will have more power - and

will, hopefully, be less influenced by PhRMA and BIO dollars.

The only people that I voted for today (in California) were the ones that I

I don't know about Holly but I am delighted. The CAA was a setup from

the beginning. A lot of good people were fooled, and deliberately

fooled by several major autism organizations that new the real agenda.

It is ludicrous to believe that Barton is holding up this bill on his

own. One phone call from Karl Rove and he would be singing it's praises

to the heavens. This was an election ploy to help Santorum and nothing

more. It's primary purpose was to get Don Imus off Santorum's back and

put out a bill that appeared to do something but only bolstered a

status quo that treats our children like dirt.

I believe Santorum was second only to Frist and maybe Burr of North

Carolina in the amount of money he got from pharmaceutical companies.

Perhaps now we can let this monstrosity die and try and create a bill

with the Democrats that actually funds real research.

Can anyone explain why some of our most visible advocacy groups decided

to publicly ally themselves with the Republican party, and candidates

like Santorum who had horrible track records on autism and were

considered political dead men walking.

We have enough problems, we don't need " leaders " who run full speed off

a cliff.

Agreed. Outside of my own research and speculation, I have a pretty good

political

advisor-my husband was a graduate in political science from UC Berkeley. Due to

the

demands of his job now (unrelated to politics), I keep up with the candidates

and overall

political issues surrounding our kids and our well-being in general, and he

feedback.

It is probably a more accurate statement to say that many of us voted AGAINST a particular individual rather than FOR a particular candidate or party. I personally voted the MOMMY ticket...if an elected official listened to parents and tried to help our children (and I mean REALLY helped rather than the Santorum/Enzi/Frist/CAN/ASA/AS version of helping) then I supported them regardless of party. To those who refused to listen to us, lied to us and betrayed our children while pocketing money from pharma, then I voted to send them home. I felt it was long past time to give someone else an opportunity to listen to parents about what has happened to a generation of children and the need to seek REAL answers and solutions.

As a life-long Republican, I did not vote FOR the Democratic party per se but rather showed my extreme displeasure with those Republicans who put the financial interests of pharma over the needs of children.

Having spent many, many hours on The Hill, Bobbie Manning and I can tell you that if we heard it once we heard it a hundred times from Democratic staffers and even Democratic Senators and Representatives that if they had the majority, they would DEMAND hearings and get some answers about autism and the CDC's shenanigans. Okay, the proof will be in the pudding so to speak. Many of us parents, Republican and Democrat alike cast our vote for the CHILDREN and worked hard to help change the make-up of Congress so we could get the hearings and answers we were promised. Let's see who keeps their promise - I hope they look at Santorum and then look at Lieberman and remember this little civics lesson that parents help engineer. Santorum lied to parents and did not REALLY help our children...he LOST. Lieberman was very vocal and even very actively campaigned for our children and stood up to the CDC demanding answers...he WON. Lie to parents - lose your job! Help our children and listen to parent - keep your job! If Santorum et al had not been so busy trying to KEEP their job and actually did the unthinkable (like actually DOING their job) then maybe the outcome of this election would have been different. The lesson that Congress should learn from this election – beware of mommies, daddies and Operation Accountability. Attention Congress: parents WILL hold you accountable if you lie to us - we will work our fingers to the bone to get you defeated in the next election and send you home (or to your big fat lobbying job with PharMA).

I can tell you that there are folks on both sides of the aisle, like Congressmen Burton and Weldon, Congresswomen Maloney and that have put aside partisan politics for the sake of helping our children. I applaud them and their colleagues in the Senate who have done the same. Our children and their health should not be a partisan issue. I will work with anyone, regardless of party affiliation, who has a TRUE desire to get answers and seek solutions for our children.

I don't think this election was as much about Republican or Democrat ideology as it was about Americans in general and parents in particular being fed up with the lies, deceit, corruption and selling of power. So yes, I've decided to be a dues paying, card-carrying member of the MOMMY party rather than Republican or Democrat. My vote and my financial support will go to those candidates that listen to mommies (and daddies) to help our children...REALLY help our children not the Santorum/Frist/Enzi definition of help. As Molly Ivins once said in her syndicated column, "Mommies know what a campaign contribution is. Mommies can tell the difference between a cynical sack of excrement and safe babies. Mommies can get very angry. You've got to watch those mommies." By now, I hope that Senator Santorum and his cronies get the message...Mommies (as well as Daddies, grandparents, aunts, uncles, sisters, brothers, cousins and friends) vote and we DON'T vote for liars and hypocrites regardless of party affiliation.

It is not really all that difficult to tell the REAL good guys from the slick PR firm, stylized pseudo good guys. Both have people with good intentions that want to make a meaningful difference. Both have hard-working folks that actually DO the work versus those that TELL you they do the work or even worse, they take credit for someone else's work. But the old adage that actions speak louder than words is true. Look at their actions rather than their words. When their actions don't match their words...follow the money. If the money trail leads to unpleasant realities; well, then clean house, start fresh, demand accountability and get your mission back on track or risk losing your supporters.

Hi Lujene,

I don't want to give the impression that I am a knee-jerk Democrat

because I 'm not. ANd I believe I voted the " Daddy Ticket " . I voted

for those who I thought would o the best for people with autism.

I'll admit I am a one issue voter. Some people vote solely on the

basis of a candidates position on guns or abortion, my vote is

determined by a candidate's stand on autism. As I said in an earlier

message I have a sign for my GOP state Senator up in my front yard

In New York I think the autism community has been pretty well served

by the Republicans who control the State Senate. I have met most of

the Senators form Long Island and they are rimarily non-ideological

problem solvers. Our Republicn Senators in NY appear to be a

completely differen animal than the group that is (was) in charge

down in DC. And the consequences of the misrule we have endured for

the last few years was answered in part last night by the almost

complete disappearance of Congressional Republicans from the

Northeast.

Hopefully, all the lobbying work done on the DC Democrats will bear

fruit. We as a community havbe to get very active very quickly to

make sure the Democrats come through on prior promises. BIg Pharma

invested heavily in the Republicans. There willbe many new and old

memebrs of the House and Senate who had to work much, much harder

because of the huige amounts of ppharma money given to the GOP

Congressional candidates. I don't think they willbe coming to town

looking to do pharma's bidding.

It will be interesting to see the committee assignments in the next session of Congress. The HELP Committee chair will have the power of subpoena of important documents from the CDC, IOM, FDA and NIH. Now - who to bug about pushing for that chair? In my view Sen. Santorum was a false champion, not by any means a saviour. Two real champions were just reelected: Senators Lieberman and Stabenow.Remember, Dodd was a cosponsor of the Combating Autism Act and made the clearest statement in the CAA colloquy about vaccines and thimerosal. Santorum did not make a similar unequivocal and clear statement on the colloquy. He hedged, setting up Enzi, who proceeded to endorse the 2004 IOM report. Santorum was not an unequivocally clear and forthright voice for our kids. Dodd is better, and Lieberman and Stabenow, also Lautenberg and a number of others are better. If the Dems have a majority in the Senate we will have something to work with.In the House it is much more problematic.
