Guest guest
Kim, these may not all be great choices for you, but they are the only options. Knock him out with meds. Give him a huge bribe. Papoose strap him and sit on him. Either way, make sure you are not pulling blood for one little test. Get a bunch of them done at once if it’s so stressful. I’d have added social stories but they take too long if you need your test done soon. Guest guest
Demerol? Kidding! Have you tried using melatonin? I'm considering using that. My daughter kept me up last night pretty late. When he hear her clapping her hands...we know she's having a bowel movement. I got up three times last night to change poopy diapers. Ugh. After those, she stayed awake until 1:00 a.m. and I have to get up at 5:00 a.m. every day. I'm bleary eyed and foggy...and have a bit of a short temper when I don't sleep. I have to remind myself that raising my voice to my daughter never does any good...she only responds when you're peaceful and persistent. :-) > > I tried to knock him out with Benadryl but it only made him hyper. Guest guest
My son completely freaks out too and he is strong as hell. We have used liquid Versed with good success. That is the drug Dr. Bradstreet recommended. Good luck, > > I tried to knock him out with Benadryl but it only made him hyper. Guest guest
We often get higher levels showing in hair and feces, rather than urine. It is exactly what I had to do for the first 20 blood draws with my 6 year old. He is 4' 2 " , 84 lbs. I am 5' 0 " and 115 lbs. No fun is right. You end up walking out of the lab pouring with sweat as if you've just been in a wrestling match! If it's any consolation, for the last three draws, he has sat on my lap unrestrained with only minimal wimpering. I'm hoping this will be the case eventually for the rest of you who deal with this problem!

Guest guest
they gave my son that stuff (chloral hydrate) when we went in for an MRI a few years back - made him really goofy and stimmy - had to cancel the test. > > Yea, that's what benadryl does to my kid too. Guest guest
Wow - I feel for you guys - I guess in some ways we're blessed here - with a small dab of Emla cream, my son does ok with this. Agree on the pee tests - the porphyrin test in particular is so easy. -randy > > > > My 8 yr old son is TERRIFIED of needles. We also took her portable DVD player and a couple of her favorite videos. She never knew what happened! I also agree with doing as many tests at one time as poss. And too, not sure a blood test for heavy metals is an accurate way to go. Hope this helps. Connie
Guest guest
I’ve heard of some doctors prescribing single dose sedatives or anti-anxiety meds for blood draws. We’ve never used them. Guest guest
These blood draws are very difficult. My son is 60 pounds and very strong. We have to physically restrain him. It is exhausting. Each time, it gets a tiny bit better. The most important thing is for YOU to stay calm and matter-of-fact about the entire process. Guest guest
Get a script from your Dan doc or pediatrician for numbing cream to numb the area and for either valium or versed to calm the child. It helps to bring someone to help you. I bring a pillow and a blanket. I lay y child on the carpet and wrap him in the blanket and lay on him. The nurse holds his arm and the doc does the blood draw. The first few are rough and then the children get used to it. --- <dhdudley@...> wrote: > > > > > My 8 yr old son is TERRIFIED of needles. Guest guest
Lol. I was just kidding. I've grown catnip for my cats, that stuff stinks! I gave up cigarettes 8 years ago, but still long for one. The other stuff I haven't done in a good 16 years. It can really suck to grow up sometimes! Guest guest
Yes, and it is nasty! Just like Alpha Keto glutaric acid is for one of my ASD (aka mercury poisoned) sons who are dangerously high in ammonia, It is terrible tasting- which is why I praise him every time after drinking it for me. My kids are worn down from mommy coming at them with a shot glass full of vitamins. That is why they take them, even though they know they hate them. There's just a big reward at the end of every shot glass! > > > > Gee, I really started something with this catnip thing.
