Guest guest
Darn, and I was just about over UA for infecting my computer with that stupid e-mail virus during the Flood the White House with Faxes campaign. How can anybody forget a zillion Unsubscribe Me. Unsubscribe Me. Unsubscribe Me. messages? And then they called us all cowards for putting them on our block lists. Unlocking Autism, you are officially on my list for good. Unlocking Autism's stance . . . Apologies if this has already been posted to EOH list . . . this was forwarded to me just now: Unlocking Autism is committed to supporting the Combating Autism Act. We were supportive of it in it's original format. We are even more enthusiastically supportive of the "renovations."And this is why.....We are asking the United States Government to take $1 BILLION out of the budget of the United States and direct it specifically toward children and adults affected by autism. $1 BILLION!!!We can certainly understand the apprehension on the part of anyone who feels that the government has frittered away funding in the past, focused on ineffective research or spent countless hours and money counting our kids only to be able to say, "Jeez...there are a lot of these kids with autism out there, aren't there?" However, those stepping stones are the very foundation that have put our community in the position that it is in today to even be able to ASK them to do something else. They did all that, now it is time for them to do more, especially since they have gotten so good at counting and realize how many more kids have blossomed in the meantime.Everyone needs to sit back and think about is that we are asking for $1 BILLION. For those with concerns about how the money will be spent on the specific things you think it should be spent on...i.e. mercury research, which is giving you pause, consider this: If we even get .5% (just one-half of one percent) of $1 BILLION going towards mercury research, or to research the role that vaccines potentially play in the development of autism, that is $5 Million. How much do we have being spent on vaccine research now - components or otherwise? How hard are we working to raise money out the in the community to fund this research? We are selling brownies at conferences and holding car washes. How many brownies do we have to sell at 50 cents each or cars must we wash for $5 to equal $5 Million? For those who aren’t great at math, (like me, I had to actually figure this out on my calculator) that is 10 million brownies and 1 million cars.ly, Congress is going to be spending that $1 Billion on something. They apparently have it available even in this economy and with our country at war. So, rather than spend it on $700 hammers for the Department of Defense, $2500 on a screwdriver for the Space Shuttle, subsidize gas prices or God forbid even give it to Mayor Ray Nagin down here to rebuild the little Banana Republic that I live in and "repair" our levees, UA wants it spent on these kids. SOMETHING good will come out of spending $1 BILLION on kids with autism. Unlocking Autism will always continue to advance the front for vaccine research and to increase the safety of existing and future vaccines. We have been in that fight for over 9 years now and will continue to fight for it long after CAA passes. Supporting this bill does not make UA turncoats on that issue. Supporting this bill leaves us in the game to live to fight another day to work with the agencies that will direct the use of those funds. At some point though, our community does have to have faith to get the ball rolling. This is an incredible ask of Congress. Once we ask it, should it be granted, we don't all get to run off to the Cayman's to sip on drinks with umbrellas...we have to keep pushing. We have to stay on them to see that the "outline" in this bill is carried through by the agencies that receive the money. When our community focuses on this bill and passes a practically unprecedented and historic piece of disease specific legislation, our political clout with regard to other issues will increase exponentially. If the autism community doesn't want want that, I am sure the Alzheimer's, Leukemia, Breast Cancer, Colon Cancer, Lupus, Diabetes, Celiacs, "You Name The Ailment" group, would like to take their crack at $1 BILLION.Everyone needs to step back and look at the whole picture and the future over the next 5-10 years. We have over 1.5 million kids and adults with autism now, today. Mercury research is important. There is enough evidence to show that something is very wrong. But it isn't the magic bullet that is going to solve the autism epidemic. Mercury just happens to be the lowest hanging fruit because it KILLS everything it comes in contact with. It is stupid to give it to children. But then again, so is antifreeze, it kills cats and they put that in vaccines, too. OR Formaldehyde, they embalm dead people with that, why in the WORLD would they think that was good for kids? OR Lead, why are they still putting that in vaccines when anyone on God's green earth knows it is so bad we needed to take it out of pencils, paint and gasoline....but we don't seem to be fussing about that. It just as stupid for us to believe that solving that one piece of the puzzle will clear up the whole disorder. It won't. Even without mercury in vaccines, children are still going to develop autism. These kids have way more going on with them...and as noble as it is for us to strive to prevent this from happening to other children and other families, we have to consider the children and adults that are currently affected. We cannot let them go down with the ship as we fight for the children in the future. My son, Liam hasn't received one vaccine since he was 22 months old. He will never get one again if I have anything to do with it, whether or not it contains mercury. He is 10 now. Eight years post diagnosis and he is still has autism...better, but has autism all the same. He will most likely have some degree of autism his whole life. While my hopes are the same as any parent that he will one day be able to manage his symptoms and be on his own, go to college, get married and be able to be successfully self-sufficient, it is my duty as his mother to work to make his world the best that it can be.We also need to remember, as a community, that politics and law are two very separate circles in a Venn diagram that intersect. In fact the moment at which they intersect is actually seconds when the bill is sitting on the desk of the Executive Branch for as long as it takes Bush to sign his name. That is it. Anything can happen with this bill between now and then for better or for worse. If we can't come to an agreement on the mercury issue here in this bill as it pertains to children with autism, it seems to me that anyone interested in working on that issue could draft a bill separate from a specific tie in with the autism community (make it more generic to include a wider population), get a couple of sponsors and work to get that bill to secure funding separately. Mercury isn't good for kids with a predisposition to develop autism, but it isn't good for any kid. So with that broader base, maybe if we can't secure that language here, in this bill, it can be secured in another bill, that would focus specifically on how mercury, ingested through fish consumption or injected into little thighs, affects the development of children. But that doesn't mean, if we miss that language on this bill that we should pick up our ball on the CAA and go home OR more importantly, impede the progress on this battle front. The concern that continues to be expressed that we won't be able to go back and ask for more money as an autism community if they give us $1 Billilon now, won't really matter because we will be asking for it for research on how mercury affects children's development, not autism necessarily. With all that said, barring any ridiculous amendments to this bill as it stands that would do something that would obviously cause us to withdraw our support, i.e. making Goat Worship the national religion, requiring mandatory vaccinations for all children regardless of their philosophical, religious beliefs or medical issues, exempt Pharma from liability for the havoc that I believe down to the very last cell on my pinky toe they have wreaked on these children, Unlocking Autism will not only support, but will actively encourage the support of this legislation. To walk away from securing $1 Billion from the US Congress for my kid is the craziest thing I can think of. To walk away from the clout that passing this bill will establish for our community is the second craziest thing I can think of. To walk away from future bills that Members of Congress will support because they now see us as a unified community that they can work with is the third craziest thing that I can think of. UA will remain committed because when this bill does pass, not if...when, we want to stay in the game to be able to go to the table when it is time and "oversee" the way this money gets spent. Once it passes, we will continue to fight to make sure the NIH and other agencies are spending those dollars in the spirit in which it was intended. We will hold those agencies accountable for their actions. ReynoldsUA

Guest guest
, and the Unlocking Autism people have been some of the most committed parent advocates you'll find anywhere, as well as personal friends. It is an obscenity to ignore the sweat and blood they have put into good works over the YEARS for our kids and families, like providing support services for Katrina autism families and not taking one dime for themselves to do it, just to mention one of many many things. There may be disagreements of tactics and strategies at times, but let us not forget who are friends and family are. This goes the same for other " DAN! allied " groups like Safe Minds and the NAA. There can be disagreements amongst ourselves, and at times strong disagreements. But if in our passion lose our dignity and we forget who our friends are we are lost in self-destruction. Guest guest
Thanks Lenny, I am torn with the CAA - I am a member of NAA, UA and A-Champ. I am going to read the bill that posted for myself. $1 Billion is alot of money, and recognition from all US citizens that autism is important. I would like to see the words vaccine research in the bill, but I also learned in MN with our Thimerosal bill - I pushed to include all citizens, not just pregnant women and children under 3 - and that added opposition from nursing homes that said it would be too difficult and confusing to the residents to get informed consent for the flu shot with Thimerosal if it became necessary due to shortage. I also learned from many other people in other states that worked on bills that you cannot trust what the politicians say - the wording needs to be in the bill. I am reserving judgement until I can read the bill tonight. K. Guest guest
The low expectations of groups may very well be indicative of their subservient nature. I agree. Rather than try to dissect one's station in life shall we at least temporally address something relevant here. After all, there is no degree of involvement that will convince me to do something contrary to acting in the best interest of our children. In reading so many devotions here, I sense this in others as well. At issue is a bill and not a single person's person, but rather our children's rights as victims of autism. A bill that is problematic at best. Any group which aligns itself favorable to a bad bill is subjecting itself to lots and lots of reproach and indignation for years. I can do nothing to restore the loss of credibility suffered by any of these groups. They can retract their support or choose to live with their tainted reputations. It's their bed. They have to sleep in it. Mason never signed the United States Constitution. While most were just giddy to know their signatures were going to appear on a fancy document that would last at least a thousand years, Mason got up, left the meeting and walked away from the Constitutional Convention disgusted. He went home within a week. Did that make him unpatriotic or un-American or a party pooper? He didn't do it because he knew that a Constitution without a bill of rights to protect the individual was worthless. His position cost him his life-long friendship with neighbor General Washington. Washington - the plantation owner wanted to preserve slavery and establish security for the gentry by maintaining clear class distinction. Although he is little known today, Mason was the wisest of our political framers. It is said Mason was able to get to the bottom line of any document in a single glance. He knew the selfish nature of his contemporaries was pure human vanity and their ignorance of his position for establishing was rooted in selfishness or self-interest. Still he was forced to leave the convention defeated and by most accounts friendless. It was only years later after many visits to his house by Jefferson that the real motives behind the American Revolution crystallized in the eyes of power. The Constitution it seemed lacked something. Jefferson couldn't put his finger on the answer the question of what really changed with freedom? The majority of the new American people were still being treated with just as much contempt and indifference by the Americans in power as they had under heavy servitude to the British crown. Mason expounded on the fact that if the American government expected to hold the confidence of the American people these people must be given individual rights. We all have a debt of gratitude to pay to Mason. His hold out led to the eventual adoption of our now shrinking Bill of Rights. The same Bill of Rights President Reagan expounded on before mesmerized Soviet Union college students listening to his speech at their university. What would happen to this guy if there was no Bill of Rights? "We are in the midst of an international epidemic. Those responsible for investigating and dealing with this epidemic have failed. Among the reasons for this failure is the fact that they are faced with the prospect that they themselves may be responsible for the epidemic. Therefore, in their efforts to exonerate themselves they are an impediment to progress. I believe that public health officials know there is a problem; they are, however, willing to deny the problem and accept the loss of an unknown number of children on the basis that the success of public health policy - mandatory vaccination - by necessity involves sacrifice. Neither I, nor my colleagues subscribe to the belief that any child is expendable. History has encountered and dealt with such beliefs. You, the parent's and children, are the source of the inspiration and strength for our endeavours; our quest for truth through science - a science that is compassionate, uncompromising and uncompromised. I do not mean to stir you to mutiny, but be assured that armed with this science it is in your power to force this issue, in your pediatricians office, in Congress, in the Law Courts. Keep faith with your instincts - they have served you well."---Andy Wakefield (April 22, 2002 "POWER of ONE - IDEA" Rally, Washington DC) Unlocking Autism's stance . . .> > > > Apologies if this has already been posted to EOH list . . . thiswas forwarded to me just now:
Guest guest
Lenny, I will not denigrate any of 's contributions to the cause through the years, nor will I go through every criticism I have of her statement on the CAA. But I have to say that her statement creates an impression -- rightly or wrongly -- that UA is more concerned about obtaining a " seat at the table " than it is with taking a principled stand. Guest guest
Wade, Insightful comments. As you say, no one will willingly give us a seat. The only way we get a seat at the table, and the only way it means anything, is when we have sufficient power through organizing parents to force " them " do it. We are getting closer to that point. Guest guest
Gumshoes are now eating their steak grinders! We have over 1..5 million kids and adults with autism now, today. ReynoldsUA

Guest guest
To All: Unlocking Autism's stance reminds me of Esau, who sold his birthright for a serving of thick lentil soup and some bread. Unlike Esau, who only despised his birthright, it seems that Unlocking Autism is intent on selling out the millions of children who have been damaged and their families for a share of a PROMISED billion dollars ($1,000,000,000.00) minus 425 million for the " doctors " ($425,000,000.00) minus 50 million ($50,000,000.00) for overhead leaves about $525 million ($ 525,000,000.00 for data cillection, studies of incidence, and searches for " genetic " causes, and less-than- effective non-biomedical interventions instead of focusing on the holistic biomedical interventions (dietary, dietary supplement and restorative medicines [allopathic, folk, and homeopathic], and the removal of all sources of added mercury from the environment including all uses of mercury in medicine and dentistry. Since the conservative estimates place the overall cost for the mercury-damaged children born in the US between 1940 and 2005 at NOT LESS THAN TEN TRILLION dollars $10,000,000,000,000.00 PROVIDED 1) the most effective interventions were started immediately and 2) all sources of mercury added by mankind through any industrial process including, but not limited to, a. coal burning power plants, b. cement kilns, c. crematoriams, and d. chlor-alkali plants as well as e. all process that introduce any amount of any mercury species into any medicine or use any mercury in dentistry were: 1. for " a " through " d, " REDUCED by 90% in 3 years and, 2. for " e, " BANNED IMMEDIATELY, RECALLED and PROPERLY DESTROYED. Failure to IMMEDIATELY curb all mercury EMISSIONS (including banning the use of mercury in all vaccines, other drug products and all medical procedures, and RECALLING all mercury-containing drugs, mercury compounds used in medicine and mercury for use in dentistry AND destroying all such by converting them all to the appropriate form of mercuric sulfide and burying the residues in a suitable hazardous- waste landfill would result in an annual increase in costs of on the order of one-half to one TRILLION dollars ($500,000,000,000.00 to $1,000,000,000,000.00) each year [factoring in additional harm to the existing population of damaged children, the new babies and their families who will be harmed, and inflation at 3% per year]. A billion dollars over " 5 " years sounds like a lot of money, BUT we should REMEMBER: a. this is OUR money (taxpayer dollars) b. only a little of OUR money will be used to EFFECTIVELY treat the existing damaged children, c. the damage from mercury in Thimerosal-containing biological products given to pregnant women, babies, children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly WILL continue to INCREASE from the disclosed Thimerosal in vaccines and serums as well as from the undisclosed mercury, if any, in some monoclonal antibody drugs since these are NOT being banned and recalled, d. only a little will be spent for therapies seeking TO holistically ASSESS (through comprehensive differential diagnosis) and RESTORE the fundamental HEALTH TO THOSE who have been DAMAGED, and e. to the extent that the causal insults that lead to the damage are " environmental " and no fundamental studies are being explicitly funded to find and eliminate these environmental triggers, the ROOT CAUSE(S) OF the DAMAGE will, in all likely- hood, NOT BE FOUND, OR EVEN EFFECTIVELY ADDRESSED by the spending of these funds -- other funds will be needed to prove the triggering cause(s) and find effective corrective therapies to improve the health and wellbeing of those damaged. Based on the proceding, the reality seems to be that the cost to help the damaged children and their families will be NORE THAN twelve and a half (12.5) TRILLION dollars ($12,500,000,000,000.00) when the funding ends and the healthcare establishment will still be railing against mercury from fish, batteries, coal, cement, etc., WHILE a. claiming that the mercury in medicine is a " different " form of mercury -- one that is " safe " BECAUSE they say so, b. at the same time, REFUSING TO CONDUCT the comprehensive TOXICITY STUDIES REQUIRED TO FIND the SAFE LEVEL OF Thimerosal in vaccines and other drugs for ALL Americans, not just, as the current data indicates, the 50%-75% of the people who are apparently healthy today. As things now stand, most of this public money will line and fatten the pockets of the healthcare establishment with only some small fraction " trickling " down to the American public and the children and families who have been damaged by the KNOWING actions of the healthcare establishment as any rational person who has studied the published literature knows all too well. Those who oppose selling their children, grandchildren, neices, nephews, cousins, friends and themselves out (for what is essentially their OWN money) KNOW the " substitute " joint Combating Autism Act is, at best, a Faustian bargain that does NOT stop the obvious KNOWING mercury poisoning of the public by mercury in medicine and dentistry NOR revoke the licensing or approval of ALL the drug formulations that contain any added level of any mercury species and recall and destroy ALL the drug products whose license or approval has been revoked and recall ALL if the mercury amalgam components so that the KNOWING poisoning of Americans by mercury in both medicine and dentistry is stopped! As an imperfect servant of God, I know that the " substitute " joint House/Senate Combating Autism Act should be opposed for the EVIL that it is. Moreover, every member of Congress who has supported it should be voted out of office as soon as possible! Hopefully, those on the community of the harmed who support this bill will understand that they have let their desire for a little power and a little of their OWN tax dollars cloud their judgment. Respectfully, Dr. King http://www.dr-king.com PS: As things now stand, we would be better off if we created our own charity for the study and treatment of all poisoning by mercury and other heavy metals and each parent, grandparent, uncle, aunt, cousin, and cincerned friend contributed at least $100.00 per year to that charity -- if at least 25 million contributed that $100.00 tax- deductible contribution, then, each year we would raise 2.5 billion dollars ($2,500,000,000.00) 2.5 times the total proposed in the CAA, roughly 12.5 times the annual amount the CAA provides, and because we would not likely waste 425 million on training doctors or spend 5% on overhead, the amount raised annually would effectively be almost 25 times the annual anount available for non-doctor-training issues. If: a) Congress were proposing a 25% tax on the gross profits (from all sources) of all drug makers, medical practitioners, dentists, hospitals, and dentists who use any mercury in their businesses a freeze and a 15% tax on the salary, stock options, bonuses, and other perks of all their executives and board members UNTIL: 1) all use of mercury in medicine and dentistry have ceased and 2) the incidence rate for all neurodevelopmental disorders (as defined by the definitions used in 2005) had dropped below 6 in 10,000 for at least 15 consecutive years, and c) that tax was dedicated to: 1) finding the cause(s), 2) caring for the damaged and their families, 3) agressively treating the damage with therapies that are curative rather than symptom or behavior suppressive, 4) training if the caregivers and special educators needed, and 5) providing an education tailored to the needs of each damaged person, then I would support such a bill PROVIDED the spending of the tax revenues raised each year was overseen by a panel of those who: a) have damaged children at all levels, have a strong sense of ethics and morals, and c) are willing to work for a middle-class wage, and d) will be willing to serve not less than 2 years nor more than 6 years. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ At 20:32 7/22/06 -0000, mommiepie2000 wrote: > >Thank you for posting this. >It makes so much sense..... > > > > >> >> Apologies if this has already been posted to EOH list . . . this >was >> forwarded to me just now: >> >> >> Unlocking Autism is committed to supporting the Combating Autism >Act. >> >> We were supportive of it in it's original format.
