Guest guest
FYI This is called product placement advertising. NBC's Seinfeld, for example, made Snapple a household name by having the stars drink a few sips. We all remember what the same NBC show did for Junior Mints. You may also recall Oprah actually didn't spend a dime of her own money to give away those Lincoln Mercurys on her show. If anybody would like to learn a lot more about how companies are employed to make changes to our thinking and our way of life they might want to check out this link: http://www.bcg.com/ - It's a link to a company called Boston Consulting Group. You might find it interesting that this particular company contracts with many pharmaceutical firms, the World Health Organization and Bill Gates and others Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization to formulate strategy for advancing and protecting their products, including, but not limited to vaccines. Drug companies are a major financial resource for NBC and the other networks. What you may not know is GE, which owns NBC Universal, actually is involved in 90% of the world's vaccine manufacturing, and you may recall the thimerosal MSDS with the GE logo on it indicates they also use/sell thimerosal. I can't re-find the link here during lunch break, but Senator Frist threatened to ban drug advertising for at least two years around the time of the last AMA convention. Matt Lauer takes Ambien Since Imus has been off I've been watching the Today show. An exercise in reaffirming why I never watch this crap.Matt Lauer is interviewing a sleep doctor about sleep medications. They ran a story first with snippets of these commericals. First stating if you have watched tv for thirty minutes recently then you have seen a commerical for sleep meds! Butterflies flying in the air and puppies sleeping in baskets...so peaceful....Matt says 42 million prescriptions were written last year for these drugs. Asks if either it's overprescribed or we have a lot of sleep deprived people? Doctor responds "both".Matt proudly fessed up to using Ambien himself. Love that adult style peer pressure angle. Look people I use it and I'm Matt Lauer try it, you'll like it....Anyways it was about a 5 minute commerical, umm I mean interview about sleep meds.Wonder how many more prescriptions will be written based on that interview?Stories like that blur the line between the commericals and the "news". But then we know the "news" really is bought and paid for by their advertisers, so in reality there is no difference.Gotta run Al and Matt are talking about wrestling nude like traditional Greco-Roman wrestlers.... Guest guest
Hi Robby, You make valid points re: product placement advertising. However, taking a thinly veiled shot at Mark Blaxill (BCG), implying he is part of the problem rather than part of the solution, is just factually wrong. I would support Mark as a candidate for one of the community positions on IACC. IMO, it would be hard to find someone more dedicated to discovering the cause of ASD than Mark. Mark spends his free time on advocacy orgs (safeminds), publishing research, presenting at conferences, and testifying to legislatures. Please reread the research Mark has published over the past few years. If you want to continue this Robby, let's please do so privately. > > FYI > > This is called product placement advertising.
