Guest guest
I think some of the people who have been so vocal, and in a seemingly angry way against the s, simply resent the fact that people of " privledge " , have been able to accomplish what they have in a relatively short amount of time. This community collectively is extremely frustrated. We have watched what corrupt Pharmaceutical companies, who exude money and power have done to our innocent chldren. So far they are getting away with it. The facts are people with money and influence have the ability that many of us don't to get things done. It's a fact of life, right or wrong. Maybe some people can't get over that. I think some in this community have linked the s with this corporate greed and deceit due to Mr. 's positions at NBC and GE. Hell, who hasn't noticed the fact that NBC's number one advertisers are drug companies. Guilt by association I guess. As far as I can tell they haven't done anything yet to earn this distrust and skepticism. Time will tell what they accomplish. I know they have raised a lot of money and raised a lot of awareness, too. Look at that PSA they put together, and they have only been around for a little over a year. sat on the Imus show and implicated vaccines in her son's autism all the while her dad sat right next to her. That sayd a lot to me. Maybe we shouldn't rush to judgement on their motives. I too was very touched by the post you provided. I e-mailed the gentleman to tell him so. I think you are an extraordinary grandpa. Unfortunately, you appear to be the exception. I'm sorry I didn't come up to you in DC in April and meet you. I saw you there with your brothers. Grandparents with your level of commitment to autism is rare and should be cherished. I'm glad the s have joined your small group. Maybe through their example more will follow. > > I want to thank Bob , his wife Suzanne, daugther and their > autistic son for all they have tried to do in the time they have been " in the > trenches " . Guest guest
It doesn't take much to understand suffering and plight. Priviledge brings responsibility. People in "high places" didn't get there by doing everything "kosher". They had breaks and a little nepotism here and there. Yes they worked well and diligently and took their opportunities. There are many who have been denied the ability to take their opportunities due to circumstances beyond their control. Furthermore, every successful coerporation is only so because the underlings work diligently and as hard. Many are "blackmailed" into working long hours and under trying conditions because they have to keep their jobs..and....not because they want to. The s et al are entitled to do anything as they see fit. By the same token the "little" guys are entitled to draw their own conclusions. Interesting though, had the s and others been paying more attention to the Autism issue before it hit their grandson, they could have been doing what they're doing now only earlier and their grandson might not have been usurped by the tentacles of the autism beast. Right now there are plenty families of priveledge who aren't paying attention to this issue............."a fool learns by their mistakes, a wise person by others" Given the 1:166 ratio, everyone of them will be affected............sooner instead of later than they think.!!! This is the chilling reality.!! Anyone is free to interpret a comment as they please..........but don't think for one second that every parent of a child afflicted with autism doesn't have or hasn't had the same resolve as you interpret Suzzanne has. To me her comment came accross as she's going to be the one to do what no-one else has been able to. Regarding the pity angle.....my concern is purely that these types of pleas emphasise the need to view our kids and people with a disability as being different, incapable and not worthy of having the same opportunities as neurotypicals. Whatever is done to or for them is regarded as going above and beyond the call of duty. It's extra and they should be grateful for the paltry scraps. Recognizing and acknowledging the supreme efforts and sacrifices made by those who have travelled the road before is just plain courteous and respectful. And yes it's wrong in my opinion for people of priveledge to automatically think they know better than others who've been waging the same battle for longer than they have. My concern is that none of these organizations do anything to help those who struggle finanacially on a daily basis just to make ends meet and help their kids. The 2 million raised could set up a co-operative that would provide help to many. It doesn't need to go into research. As I said previously, I wrote the s when they first started proffering constructive suggestions and wishing them well. I doubt that they even read my e mail, because I received one of those standard e mail soliciting support. I'm not angry with them, they are doing some good, they just can do better and be more effective. There are many parents out there who could offer significant pointers and suggestions which would really make a difference in the lives of many. Take care n Rmoffi@... wrote: I want to thank Bob , his wife Suzanne, daugther and their autistic son for all they have tried to do in the time they have been "in the trenches". I also want to thank all the moms and kids in their excellent psa video that some on this site have unfairly mis-characterized as a plea for "pity". I am having a hard time trying to understand where so much anger, open hostility, bitterness and at times unnecessarily mean-spirited comments come from? What drives this seething anger and suspicion of the "s? Surely it must be more than simply joining foces with a group that many have ample reason to believe has betrayed all we hold ear? How else does one confront the enemy on a daily basis unless one is inside his tent? Apparently, some of the harshest critics of the 's appear driven by the simple fact the 's have not been in the "trenches" from the very beginning. Apparently, for some at least, having an autistic grandson and a daughter that you have spent your entire life desperately trying to protect from any harm simply isn't good enough. Unfortunately, human nature being what it is, there will always be a small number of people who will use every opportunity to discredit the 's. They will never "measure up" to the early mom's and dad's, that too often found themselves virtually alone when autism "knocked on their door". Liz Birt comes to mind but she is but one of hundreds that deserve the prayers and appreciation of grandparents who have yet to hear "autism knock" on their door. Are we to hold these grandparents forever suspect because the tragedy of autism has waited so long to "knock on their door"? To those tireless, dedicated, determined moms and dads,I thank you for every grandpa who felt his heart break as he watched his "namesake" regress into a lost world he has yet to find his way out of. To them, thanks for providing my son and his wife the opportunity to help my grandchild through the heroic work you have done for decades. Our family will forever be in your debt. Personally, I was inspired by Suzanne 's statement: "Authism knocked on the wrong door". That statement was immediately recognized by myself as a statement of fierce resolve, not self-aggrandizement. Self-determination, not self-pity. It said to me: We are not going away and we will never give up until we get justice for our grandson. Couldn't have said it better myself. Guest guest
I totally agree with Rmoffi. The s with their money and power have brought attention & awareness of autism into every living room in America. We shout from the rooftops but few pay attention to us. We need people like them. With 1 in 166, it's only a matter of time (and not much time) before more people in power feel this devistation also. > > I want to thank Bob , his wife Suzanne, daugther and their > autistic son for all they have tried to do in the time they have been " in the > trenches " . I read a post on a blog today and in it the author made the statement that every child is a " masterpiece. " Yes, each child is a masterpiece. So why do some powerful and influential people see my child as collateral damage in their war against disease? Why do those very same " soldiers " find it necessary to develop strategies to block proper investigation into this issue? They seem intent on doing everything within their power to hinder the very research into possible treatments that might benefit my child. Why? Why have so many others elected not to challenge this situation? When I am gone, will my son be a member of a society that is committed to ensuring that he is able to live his life with dignity and grace whether he's able to stand on his own two feet or not? It seems there are many lessons to be learned from this situation. Lessons that have as much to do with our society, our government, and the value we collectively place on our individual masterpieces as they do about autism. Guest guest
That is getting awareness out, getting laws changed, getting educators and physicians to understand what autism is, how it happens, how to treat.
