Guest guest
Randy, I agree completely. I think just doing the things we need to get done in a day and not over taxing the muscles we have left is all the " exercise " we need. Lori Sent from my Verizon BlackBerry Re:Questions about working out I have had the same experience from trying to swim -- the water pressure makes breathing quite difficult. While the saying " if you don't use it, you lose it " generally is true for most people, I think that it doesn't apply to those of us with SMA. My attempts at minimal exercise have generally resulted in increased muscle aches and weakness lasting 2 - 3 days. Exercise seems to overtax the remaining functioning muscle cells causing them to " burn out " at a faster rate. On the subject of exercise, a neurologist advised me that the maximum exercise I should do is whatever it takes me to get through the day. The type of exercise that I have found to be beneficial is mild stretching exercises to maintain joint range of motion and to prevent contractures. A standing frame helps to prevent knee and hip joint contractures, as well as offers the advantages of weight bearing. I hope that my experiences have been helpful. Guest guest
My MDA clinic doctor told me the same thing. Guest guest
Yes, my doctor said that too. He gives my different muscle groups " ratings " when I go in for checkups. I think he said any muscle with a rating of 2 or less (out of five) shouldn't be exercised beyond normal activities of daily living. All my muscles are like 0 to 2.
