Guest guest
To all your questions...yes. He made most of that possible. Of course while going through an exam he isn't going to come hold our hands- that isn't his place or purpose. Through his fund raisers, what he made possible was to delve more into research and raise money for equipment and clinics, etc. which enabled me and many others to live life fuller. My personal feeling is that it is time to stop focusing on excuses and negativity. When is the last time you went out and marveled at nature or just said " thank you " to make some body's day? From: Amy <charmedcripchic@...> Subject: Re: Petition: Cancel Humanitarian Award for Jerry Date: Sunday, January 11, 2009, 1:03 AM Joy, I had fun experiences too, but it dosen't excuse or erase the other exploitive or harmful things done to my friends, siblings, and I, in the name of an organization that targets the same disabilties that we happen to have in common. I find sharing support, and validating the life journey realities of our fellow people with disabilities, much more satisfying than any token attention deigned onto me by a celebrity who makes a career out insulting people and behaving innapropriately on camera and/or in person. Below are things we all need to ask ourselves while seperating the good things MDA and SMA true supporters do, and the image of one celebrity's routines played out year after year on stage. Did Jerry ever attend your school open houses and assemblies? Did he hold your hand during medical treatments, brace fittings, blood gases, xrays, eeg and ekg tests? Did he bring your parents coffee while you were hospitalized? Did he babysit any siblings while your parents dealt with your medical needs? Did he personally pay for and/or directly administer clinics, wheelchair fittings, flu vacines, physical therapy, accessible transportion to clinics? Take you horseback riding or swimming at camp? Get you accessible sports equipment? Etc. I'm happy for those who have had truly good experiences with Jerry . In other situations, I question if people's memories of Jerry are based on truly supportive deeds from Jerry himself? Or are people so devoted to an outdated image that they have to keep moving as fast as theyy can to keep stockholm syndrome survival coping mechanisms and myths alive? > > > > > > My husband and I signed. > > > > > > I can't stand Jerry and the way the telethon portrays > people > > with any form of MD. Guest guest
I agree with here. Many of us have benefited from the work MDA has done. Summer camp was pretty great except on the days the camera crews were there, and Jerry became a household name bringing some knowledge of Muscular Dystrophy with it. This is not a simple cut and dry issue. When I support a candidate who actually gets elected, I let them know both what I like and don't like about the work they're doing. When my local independent living center, which has played a vital role in my life, is doing something poorly I work to bring attention to the problem. It's good and bad and a lot in between. I've gotten good and bad things from my association with the MDA. I've made lifelong friends and received helpful health care. I've also been abused and humiliated through this same association. I can appreciate things that I've received from the millions of people who have donated time and money through the Muscular Dystrophy Association. At the same time I can register my opposition to an internationally recognized organization honoring someone with a humanitarian award who says horrible things about all of us. Give an award to MDA...Give one to the biggest donor...Give one to the phone bank volunteer who's never missed a telethon... Don't give one to a man who, on numerous documented occasions, said bad things about us and publically thwarted are efforts to be seen as equal to our non-disabled peers. Guest guest
Thanks Alana. This puts everything in a much better perspective. It's true that it's not simple or a cut and dry issue. And everything MDA or Jerry does isn't negative. It just gets old hearing only complaints all the time. There may be some bad things about Jerry, but there are a lot of good things to notice too. I like the idea of giving an award to MDA. From: Alana <alrt@...> Subject: Re: Petition: Cancel Humanitarian Award for Jerry Date: Sunday, January 11, 2009, 2:55 PM I agree with here. Guest guest
Maybe suggest that on the petition? MDA has been very defensive and sometimes irrational in their defence of Jerry being their spokesman. I'd feel much better about MDA if they took our concerns seriously and recognized that we need more than a cure and summer camp. We need lobbying for national personal assistance services policy, we need accessible transportation in suburban and rural areas, we need high expectations put upon us about our educations and careers. We need to be seen as people who do grow up and work, and love, and volunteer, and parent, and worship, and protest, and go out for fun, and participate in the economy. We're not just cute and desperate for help...Though, indeed, we're cute, and we need different types of assistance as outlined above. > > Thanks Alana. > This puts everything in a much better perspective. Guest guest
Alana you gracefully and fairly handle a tough job in my eyes. It's a balancing act managing any webgroup. For anyone here who gives a crap- MDA covered two wheelchairs that my parents' military health insurance didn't cover BUT this financial assistence came with horrible strings attached. Understand how humiliating it would be for you to have the MDA coordinator interupt you while playing in the middle of an MDA party, surrounded by adults, children, party staff, strangers, to be put through a suprise head to toe inspection in order to be deemed 'worthy' of an MDA funded wheelchair. That's exactly what happened to me during the 1981 MDA Christmas party in Braintree Massachusetts. The MDA coordinator picked over every inch of 14 year old me and the 8 yr old wheelchair my parents scrimped to purchass for me as well as another powerchair for my sister with no help from anybody, no discount, and out of pocket. {Let alone the manual wheelchairs my parents bought preceeding the power ones for three of us while my brother was still living}. The regional MDA coordinator inspected me, right there during the party, ogled at by all, as if part of the scheduled entertainment, while circleing around me and eying me up and down, touching diferent parts of me and my chair she announced to all, " Well you're upolhstry's worn out...you're wearing the same dress and shoes as last year...your sister is too...didn't you have a handicapped brother that died?...well I guess I'll find the money SOMEWHERE so YOU can get a new wheelchair. " ...step step step, everyone staring and silent, and obviously taking it in. Music not starting up again for a few momments while the party's hostess did this to me.... Yes MDA covered the cost of some medical equipment, camp, parties, bowling leagues, and many events where I got to have some happy memories and oppurtunities to conect with other MDA peers I wouldn't have had a chance of knowing otherwise. I appreciate them fully. Still it dosen't justify psychologically abusing the families they are supposed to be helping. Medicaid has been a challenge, but they never have used a social gethering to have a suprise inspection on a child to discourage other families from asking for 'too much'. Members please learn from this- Help people heal and have dignity instead of putting loyal blind allegiance on any abusive situation. > > coverage.(aka pity party) And i totally disagree that is is > hypocritical to > > complain about aspects of an organisation even if you benefit from its > > existence. i often complain or point out failings of the National > Health > > Service here. Guest guest
I wonder how many folks here know that your insurences and government benefits pay for your clinics before MDA pays for any of it {if anything at all}. Jerry isn't personally paying for your clinics and only in very rare circumstances does MDA funding pay for them. I totally understand that our insurences SHOULD be billed first so money goes to the biggest needs. What I dislike is how telethons portray MDA as paying for things that in reality are covered by other sources and not MDA. The only thing MDA clinic has payed for outside of my insurence in the past 22 years is an occasional parking discount cupon while I'm at their clinics. In 2003 I was refused by MDA any help for a back brace that my medicaid wasn't covering at the time. MDA told me only braces to walk were covered. Mean while the telethon holds up back braces during appeals for donations every year. As far as funding that MDA does cover- To me the credit and gratitude belongs to the people who donate money and the workers who aren't in the spotlight bafooning around and baby gaga talking to everybody using a wheelchair. Those who work to help and don't do it to get on stage with a captive audience every year are the ones who make MDA services possible. As for the other questions asked to me- I say thank you many times everyday and enjoy nature as well. Just because I don't worship at the first church of Jerry dosen't mean I'm selfish and nature hating. Anyone who takes a few minutes of time out of the world beyond the end of their own nose, is aware of the many things I do to help make the world a better place. A few of which MDA itself has given recognition and awards to me for. I happen to visit and thank firefighters doing boot drives and as a matter of fact have volunteered for MDA causes in support of things like their summer camps, and support groups and other things that they do fund. I don't hate MDA. I want the clown riding MDA's coat tail while making an ass of himself to get off the stage and out of the way of the people who can do the job without degrading tactics. > > > > > > > > My husband and I signed. > > > > > > > > I can't stand Jerry and the way the telethon portrays > > people > > > with any form of MD. Guest guest
You don't hate MDA?? You sound like you do. Clinic funding-of course your insurance should be filed first. MDA has a limited amount to spend on each person each year and should be used wisely. You " totally understand " that insurance should be billed? Then why bring it up as if they are doing something wrong like hoarding all the money and going on lavish spa retreats (oh wait, that was AIG...maybe you should direct your anger and bitterness toward them). I am thankful for the assistance MDA has provided to me over the years. For example, it is quite comforting to know that if my wheelchair needs repair this year (and every year), MDA will cover up to $500.00 of those costs. Guest guest
hmmm not sure i picked up any bitterness from amy. i guess i am coming to this from a european perspective slightly. in england you dont have to use the begging bowl of charity to get and maintain a wheelchair. so for that $500 we wouldnt have to look less than whole. the price of that $500 could well be enormous in other ways in terms of how society treats you and the opportunites afforded you. maybe obama might gradually shift this into a rights issue!?!? cheers linda 2009/1/13 Lori G <lorig713@...> > You don't hate MDA?? Guest guest
I am not exactly sure what you are saying. As far as the U.K. healthcare system, I can't help but remember that our Tufty Sue went into the hospital for a routine trach change and didn't come out alive. Yes, I have high hopes for our new president. We shall see. Guest guest
here with have a right to a power chair through the National Health Service it is not something we have to hold out a begging bowl for. this way disabled people get the mobility they need and it is not a matter of people with MD getting one rather than someone with Spina Bifida just because the MD group might be better at pushing the pity button on peoples purses or vice versa. yes it was tragic what happened to sue, and unfortunately i dont think english health care has a monopoly on some peoples hearts giving out even when under relatively minor stress cheers linda 2009/1/13 Lori G <lorig713@...> > I am not exactly sure what you are saying. > > As far as the U.K. healthcare system, I can't help but remember that our > Tufty Sue went into the hospital for a routine trach change and didn't come > out alive. > > Yes, I have high hopes for our new president. Guest guest
I agree completely with nationalized health care. I hope our new administration can put something in place that allows for quality health care for our citizens. Guest guest
I had no insurance and no government pay at the time when the MDA paid for all my doctor visits and meds and tests. they also also helped me buy a portable electric wheelchair during that time. From: Amy <charmedcripchic@...> Subject: Re: Petition: Cancel Humanitarian Award for Jerry Date: Monday, January 12, 2009, 3:43 PM I wonder how many folks here know that your insurences and government benefits pay for your clinics before MDA pays for any of it {if anything at all}. Guest guest
I go to the MDA clinic on a regular basis. I have had my fair share of bad doctor's appointments. Guest guest
Lori, I though this was a discussion board not a take no prisoners go for the throat war zone. I've been showing you respect and space for your own beliefs while you personally attack me while I try have mine. You harass me and personally attack me. I do not do that to you. You need to be reminded of some reasonable respect of other peoples' boundries, feelings, and value them as human beings with other ideas then yours. Have an opinion without denegrating me because I might not agree with you. If I did happen to agree with you I don't think you'd even allow it to go by peacefully. Nobody here attacks you the way you personally pick and back bite and snipe away at whoever didn't bow and worship your ideas. So knock off the bullshit and let other people have their own opinions. > > > > > > > > > > My husband and I signed. > > > > > > > > > > I can't stand Jerry and the way the telethon portrays > > > people > > > > with any form of MD. Guest guest
Isn't Lori just precious- she just fought her own escalated argument while using the innapropriate ammunition of the death of another SMAer who isn't here to defend the true circumstances and experiences of her own death. Tufty Sue was made of better stuff than you display. Tufty Sue supported people and didn't use their deaths as a low, cheap, and selfish, way to win an argument. Lori you should apologise to Tufty's dignity and memory, let alone her survivors, for such insensitivity. How do you think Tufty's loved ones feel to see her death exploited this way. Using Tufty Sue's death as leverage in the relentless self promotion of your own little narrow minder back biting ways is way lower than I thought even you would snipe Lori. Tufty Sue's memory is worth risking my membership here. Her memory should be honored and not exploited. Going so far as using other people's with SMAs' deaths to hammer into others your own petty grudges delusional of Jerry worship is not just unreasonable it's abusive and sociopathic. If you said the shit you just did about Tufty Sue in person you would have earned yourself the hardest ass kicking back to your slimey gutter snipe cage ever seen in history. > > > > > > > > > > > > My husband and I signed. > > > > > > > > > > > > I can't stand Jerry and the way the telethon portrays > > > > people > > > > > with any form of MD. Guest guest
Interesting that you talk so much about the importance of dignity and respect for people with disabilities and then in the next keystroke use such language to tear down a fellow member of this list. I am not a person who enjoys conflict. I joined this list with the belief that it was a forum to share information, ideas, and assist each other with problems and concerns. I don't post much, but I do read many of the messages, and have learned valuable information. I have also asked questions and have received a lot of good advice. I'm not naive; I understand that we're not always going to get along. But the venom I have seen on this list during the past two weeks...with everything we already have to deal with in our lives, do we really want to spend our time and energy attacking each other? I understand you feel strongly about your position, and that's fine. But intelligent people can argue and debate with taking it to the gutter, and I believe you are an intelligent person, even though I don't really know you. I have enough to deal with in my life without coming to a list that I thought was for support and exchange of information and instead seeing such disrespect and immaturity. Guest guest
With MDA there are no procedures or reasonable avenues to appeal or report the quality or errors of MDA's services. Even medicaid has approvals/denials sent to us in writing and open information to appeal their decisions. The telethon and brochures report how MDA provides services that I see client after client be denied. I'm happy you got that help from MDA. It's nice to know MDA fund raising got to somebody who needed it. That is a good reason to support MDA. > > > > > > > > > > My husband and I signed. > > > > > > > > > > I can't stand Jerry and the way the telethon portrays > > > people > > > > with any form of MD.
