Get her to the doctor very soon!

Hell, maybe even the emergency room.

Blood in the urine is a symptom of...

Rhabdomyolysis

Sometimes caused by statins.

Zocor

A relative of mine recently had blood in her urine and takes zocor. Has anyone heard of this side effect before from zocor? Thanks,

Hello, A few years ago, my gp told me I had protein in my urine. I

have type 2 diabetes, and my sugar levels are usually pretty good,

but he said that the protein was from my diabetes. At that time, I

was on 10 mg of Zocor for about 2 yrs. I had not had any side effects

at that time, in fact I never really knew about all the effects that

can come from statins.

I have had tendonitis in my elbow (tennis elbow) for over 3 years,

and have quit the job I had. Pain meds and physical therapy, rest,

cortisone shots have not helped. I was taking the Zocor all along,

mind you. The last time I had pt, I got very sore from lifting one

pound weights and using therapy bands. The soreness in my biceps

area lasted for FOUR months, and never subsided until I asked my gp

if the muscle soreness could be aggrevated by the Zocor. I went off

the Zocor with my gp's permission and the soreness went away in 2

days. I also had other pains in my shoulders and knees and a very

stiff neck, which has all gotten better now that I am off the Zocor.

Maybe the protein was from the disintegration of my muscles. I have

not had any positive urine analysis since, but I have been prescribed

something called enapril malaete, which is supposed to protect the

kidneys. Maybe if I hadn't been taking the Zocor, there wouldn't

have been anything in my urine sample.

Just wondering.

Hi Lori - Though I am only an SMA carrier (apparently I have 1 SMN1 gene) - I

did take Zocor two years ago for elevated cholesterol levels.  It did its job

- but per the blood test was affecting my kidneys and my doctor switched me to

Lipitor - which apparently has " worked " even better with no Kidney

side-effects.  Everyone's different - I generally trust what the docs ask me to

do - thus I'm taking Lipitor.  Best of luck - Mitch

My cardiologist has recommended Zocor due to (a slightly) high cholesterol

level.  Any experience with Zocor and SMA?

Thank you for your input.

Lori,

What happened with the Levaquin? Isn't that an antibiotic?

Thanks very much, Mitch!  Glad the Lipitor is working for you.

Lipitor actually caused a severe neuromuscular reaction in one of my former

support group members (he has CMT).  His doctor had no idea about the

neuromuscular  implications.  That's why I thought to come here and ask.

After my Levaquin fiasco last year, which sent me into six month medical tail-

spin, I am reluctant to trust any medication recommendation by doctors who have

little to no knowledge of neuromuscular  disorders.  I plan to ask my pharmacy

to do some research before I decide to fill the prescription.

Oh yes, it is an antibiotic.  My PCP was not aware of the rare neuromuscular

side-effect but the Infectious Disease specialist was.

I will never take Levaquin again either, one way I worked around taking it was

to take it before bed so I wouldn't notice it. That was about one of the

scariest experiences of my life. Works fast too, about a half hour after taking

I couldn't drive my chair, pee, or eat. Wonder why it doesn't seem to affect the

respiratory muscles? Would've been a goner for sure. I'd beware of Keflex too,

I had pneumonia 10 years ago and almost died. It was the only antibiotic that

worked.
