''A suprapubic catheter may be used in conditions where there is a problem

passing urine. These problems may include an infection, obstruction, or an

injury caused by trauma or surgery in the bladder.''

I, as most people with SMA, have nothing of the above.

I just need an accessible (with a lift) public rest room. The existed so

called accessible public toilets are not suitable for paralyzed women. That

is a bitter truth that we do not mention as much as we should in order to

show the injustice against paralyzed persons and especially against women.

Transferring for a person who cannot hold head, arms, upper body, is

possible if the caregiver had at least a couple of pairs of...arms!

The female urinal is made for women who can move/stay to the edge of the

seat.

Again, the paralyzed female has been excluded.

I have no medical need for a supra public catheter. I need public toilets

with lifts.

To medically modify my body's functions to cover the social injustice made

against me is not a solution for me. Then why not allow SMA, and other

people with serious disabilities to medically keep their body small since it

is easier to transfer and take care a baby size paralyzed person. (It has

happened).

For me I find it cruel and dehumanizing to use a supra public catheter

while I can urinate normally and i have no medical need it.

I NEED ACCESSIBLE PUBLIC TOILETS WITH A LIFT!!!! Not a medical

procedure!!!

What is a craddle lift???

No one can lift me in one arm and pull my pants down with the other all

while transferring!

A lift would really help! Unfortunately, the DMI industry has given no

thought to really-really portable lifts.

Best of all would be a (ceiling) lift in every accessible toilet!:)

attendants and my husband completely lift me in one arm and pull my pants

I love my SP catheter. I know in this group does too. I know 6 other

people with them too. It's a great way to be cathed without having a tube up

your urethra. Little to no discomfort.

Going to the bathroom outside of the home is a terrible problem for me. I

need 2 people---one to lift and one to undress me. This problem has made me

stay closer to home and not stay out too many hours. Bathroom needs rule my

life! Where are mini-lifts? Why doesn't someone invent that? What are

Hi

You seem rather unhappy we have all gave you our methods to use public toilets,

these may not meet your individual needs however considering you have been given

a few options you may want to think it’s not actually the toilet that is the

issue however it may be your unwillingness to be adaptable to situations.  I

think we can safely say there won’t be many public toilets which will full

meet everyone’s needs however with a little thought and organisation each of

us has looked at this issue and came up with a solution.  Personally with the

supra pubic catheter I can independently use a accessible toilet, it is not due

to any medical reasoning out with SMA that I have it just that it increases my

independence, this may not be your preference however please don’t ask for

advice and then be so rude in response to people who are trying to help, we all

have or are involved with SMA we don’t need you to reiterate inability’s we

all live with them,

however again some of us can deal with them and adapt in ways to address them,

I hope you find a solution that works for you

Hi,

I do not think it is me who is rude.

I insist that public toilets should have lifts.

FOR ME I do not accept a medical procedure for lack of accommodation.

I am sure, when the PWD demanded wheelchair accessible bathrooms, they

were said that they are rude and that there are other ways to meet their

needs.

For you, the supra catheter is ok. But you should accept the fact that a

lot of us prefer public accommodation for the things we can do.

Except me, there are other people who want freedom through public toilets

with lifts instead of the supra catheter. Perhaps we are not enough yet. But

it will happen eventually. Actually, at the public toilet of my University

they accepted to put a lift just for me!!! We ask, we win sometimes--maybe

more in the future.

It is really sad if we start calling each other 'rude' when we suggest

another method. (I suggest public toilets with a lift, also I introduce the

idea of real portable lift, and a female urinal design for not

transferring/sitting females.)

I do not know what other people need additionally to the public toilets

with a lift. LET'S HEAR FROM THEM, TOO!!!!

I think freedom of expression is necessary if we want to be true.

No! I am not agree with all the wonderful answers!!! On the contrary, I am

agree with the fact that mainly women with paralysis who can perfectly

control their blander (i.e. women with sma, polio, cp, etc) have so little

options to use the public toilets. A LIFT CAN MAKE THE DIFFERENCE!!! Yes,

Alana, it is both the law (we must include the need of a lift) and the

designers

of adaptive equipment: not a single urinal for women who are

sitting/cannot transfer!!!! The existing one is for able to move women.

Of course i am not agree with any of you !

I know it is painful for you AND for me to explain why i do not accept the

catheter. (Right now it is the only ''option'' i have other than

dehydrating my self.) On the other hand if i do not explain, my question for

accessible bathrooms for paralyzed women who can perfectly control their

blander

would be not understood.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we must ask for lifts in the bathrooms!

,

I have EXACTLY the same problem!!! :(

The so called " accessible " bathrooms means nothing to us if we do not have

2 people --one to lift and one to undress us.

Unfortunately there are no mini-lifts either. The female urinals are for

able to move [even to stand!!!] women! It is better to use the ... bed pan!

We need lifts in every accessible toilet. We need mini and really

portable lifts. We need urinals for sitting females with a hose to empty it so

that we do not have spills . Well, it seem that we have not spoken up enough

to make our needs known... , we can start it now! I know we are not an

organization but we have the people to do it!

;)

Below is a 5-yr-old message.

It has not been updated.

Some you may find useful -- some you may not....

***

Compendium of Ways to Pee, etc

This is not an attempt to list the usual urinals or ways to pee (such as

run-of-the-mill leg bags). Rather, this is for those looking for an

alternative. It's not comprehensive... but it's all I found.

Some of these can be used by women whether standing or sitting.

The same for men.

Some are good for standing only.

The same for men.

For someone that is still walking, but has difficulty getting up and own

from the toilet, the stand-only ones can still be an option. If you get

something like this, rails to hang onto either side (such as are added

to toilets) would be a good idea to keep from getting too tired.

For those in that situation, and also with a home of

their own that can be re-plumbed a little, a female version of a urinal

you would find in a men's restroom is also a possibility.

Yes, such a thing exists!

There's even an alternate " time of the month " item, but I have no idea

how well it works.

Guys, there are fewer options short of a catheter, but several of the

items below are also made for men.
