Guest guest
Great post, . Thanks for going to the trouble of clarifying your messages, which was not an easy thing to do because it required a mea culpa from you. Takes an individual with principles to engage in that kind of self-examination. By making clear that your criticism was NOT directed at the video or the moms or the excellent presentation of the video, it is clear that your complaint was about what the video did not do, which it could have done - and of certain persons and institutions who are placing a roadblock in debate and honest investigation of the cause of our children's health problems. Not in the least is this the fault of those in the video or even the producers of the video. Your criticism, now clarified, is well-founded and, perhaps, will be understood clearly now that you have distinguished it from the excellent video, which is a separate subject entirely. Thank you. Guest guest
Thanks for the encouragement, Bob! My intent is to NEVER discourage a parent who is doing the best for their wonderful special children. Again, I'd also like to shine the light on the opportunity that Autism Speaks will miss with their current scientific leadership. $2 million placed in the right direction will really help our kids. However, if those funds are chasing status quo, unhelpful questions involving genetic reductionism, whether or not there is an autism epidemic, parental mental illness, etc., we might as well burn the cash as an alternative to fuel oil... > > > Dear Friends > > > > I am sincerely sorry about my earlier post that was critical of > > the " Autism Every Day " video. Guest guest
Global warming? Is global warming responsible for the dust bin formerly known as the Fertile Crescent? You know, the place where civilization began? I can't imagine that everyone in that period grew talc-quality dirt then ate it. So, what happened there? Too much camel gas? Geez. Guest guest
Global warming may be real- the data is quite sketchy, although there are pockets of climate change that provide unease. The questions are, is it real and is it occurring because of carbon dioxide release, which still remains a very small component of the atmosphere, or is it occurring as it has occurred historically (prior to say, the 1850's) , from a cyclical energy release process from the sun? As an aside, the more carbon dioxide you release- the more trees/plankton you're going to get through biomass accumulation from photosynthesis/cellulose formation. Higher concentrations of carbon dioxide will increase the rate of photosynthesis, all other factors being the same. Whether that increase in carbon dioxide is also primarily responsible for the environmental warming remains to be seen. The jury is still out on that one. Hey, maybe they can find a vaccine for global warming??? Where is Rumsfeld when you need him? Re: Apology for "Autism Every Day" postGreat post, . Guest guest
Precisely – mercury is mercury. Contrary to the portrayal by some of Al Gore as a " tree hugger " , he and the environmentalists aren't just about Global Warming. A closely related issue is the release of inorganic mercury from coal-burning power plants. This is the mercury that gets into the environment and reacts with carbon molecules to become naturally occurring organic methylmercury. The study by Palmer of U of Texas showed that there exists a significant correlation between the prevalence of autism and a child's residence's proximity to a coal-burning power plant. (Using GIS mapping - hello Diane C.). The exposure to so-called " environmental " or coal-burning sourced mercury - whether inorganic or organic in fish is the likely background exposure that may well initiate the downward spiral in sulphur biochemistry that depletes glutathione in the body and results in a chronic disease process. Vaccine sourced mercury likely provides the toxic tipping point in many children - along with viruses that take advantage of and persist in immune deficient kids.. The current administration has seriously rolled back all environment legislation and enforcement, including mercury emission rules. More mercury = more autism and other chronic diseases. (Not to forget the synergistic toxicity from man other toxins, including those in vaccines, like aluminum, cyanide and many other forms of endotoxins.) Whatever party affiliation you have, if you care about children you have to care about environmental law and enforcement of those laws. Al Gore has championed that cause – not just global warming. So even if you don't like Dems like Gore, or want to ridicule him for infamous statements about " inventing the internet " you still should acknowledge that Gore's policies and approach might have given some kids a little extra chance now and in the future by working to reduce mercury emissions. Now, there are Democrats who are just as bad as some in the Bush administration. And we know there are Republicans who have fought for our kids harder than anyone. Not a partisan political issue, and not a Global Warming issue. At least Gore stands for something other than shilling for pharmaceutical financial donors. Guest guest
A top spins, but it also wobbles. The earth does the same thing. About 4,000 years ago, the Egyptians pointed to their pole star, Thuban in Draco. Today, we "more accurately" point to our pole star, Polaris in Ursa Minor, which actually is about one degree off true celestial north. So who got it right and who got it wrong? Both civilizations can boast of great accuracy in their celestial observations. The answer: both are right and both are wrong according to when one is looking up. What we've learned is things change based on the fact that as it daily spins and annually rotates around the sun the earth also wobbles. This wobble is very slow, taking 26,000 years to complete one rev or period on a radius of about 23.5 degrees. We can clearly see that northern Europe - the land that Poles, Germans, and Russians now inhabit was once covered with huge glaciers. I've never been there, but science indicates that Cape Cod is a left-over pile of glacial gravel. Man's recent progress had absolutely nothing to do with this. The glaciers melted naturally over the course of umpteen thousand years. Precession has subtle, long-term consequences for the seasons. At some point in precession, this time of the year we may be feeling the chill of a certain autumn day and down-under on the Australian outback they may be preparing for their summer tourism rush. Precession effects the earth's perihelion and aphelion. This relationship may play a role in triggering ice ages. http://employees.oneonta.edu/allenth/climatology/climate_and_civilization.htm There is excellent correspondence of reconstructed climate series for the past 150,000 years, indicating that the observed changes were global in scale. More surprising has been the discovery of very rapid changes, of ca. 7-8 degrees C, in global temperature; these have a time scale of a very few decades. This pattern characterized the last period of major glaciation (sometimes called the Wisconsin by geologists) until about 12,000 YBP, when a rapid warming process began that introduced the Holocene period -- our present climate state. As the warming trend began, these abrupt climate "flickers" continued, but stabilized beginning around 10,000 YBP. The exit from the last glacial maximum -- the rapid retreat of the ice sheets following the dying cold burst we know as the Younger Dryas-- was a dramatic event. Recall that at their maximum, the Northern Hemisphere was covered in a way that changed geography and climate almost beyond recognition. Present Chicago was covered to a depth of three kilometers, and the edge of the ice went as far south as the Middle Atlantic states. Mountain glaciers came far down the valleys. So much of the earth’s water was tied up in ice that nearly all the continental shelves were exposed; you could walk from London to Paris. The mountain of ice changed weather circulation patterns, splitting the jet stream in North America into two limbs, the southernmost of which brought Oregon rain to Arizona and made it a verdant country, dotted with lakes. As the ice withdrew the climate changed and the sea rose. How it rose! Recall that by 12,000 years ago or so the first human hunters and gatherers were well established in North America, having come across the Bering land bridge made possible by the low sea level, but perhaps by other routes as well. They had already gotten as far south at Monteverde in Chile and to the Amazon basin, where they had painted caves and left evidence of food collected from the forest. They had established the famous Clovis settlements and were well ensconsed on the coast of British Columbia. There the emergence from the grip of the Ice Age was particularly dramatic. Between 9500 and 9000 years ago the sea level rose by about 5 cm. a year -- three meters during the lifetime of a person -- requiring the founding of new settlements and the drowning of others. It isn’t so surprising that the oral history of contemporary Haida still includes references to the changing sea. But at the end of this deglaciation we entered a comparatively benign and salubrious period. It has seen relatively few shifts -- most recently, the Medieval Warm Period and the Little Ice Age - a 16th and 17th century period when Alpine glaciers were much more extensive than now. These changes appear to have been both much smaller and more local than those in pre-Holocene times; they appear as minor perturbations on a climatic record that is unique in human history for its constancy -- an unprecedented era of stable warmth. Just then something remarkable was happening in the Fertile Crescent. Where it happened first isn’t certain, but one of the early places was Jericho, of Old Testament fame. It was in fact one of the first agricultural villages. We know this because the physical remains suggest schemes for water management, and because there is clear evidence that they were cultivating two kinds of grain -- barley and einkom wheat -- and that they had domesticated sheep. Botanists recognize the Jericho wheats as cultivars because they bear plumper kernels in multiple rows compared with local wild relatives; and domesticated sheep are significantly smaller than the local variety. Guest guest
Plus, he sure as shit was funny on SNL last Saturday. Did anyone else see him? check him out: SNL: If Al Gore were President " Saturday Night Live, " opened their show tonight with Al Gore addressing the nation as if he was the President of the United States. Gore was focused and quite funny in this entertaining spoof of the current administration and their long range of failures. He also struck back at the media (update: when they claimed he said he invented the 'internets') by saying that he invented an " Anti- Hurricane and Tornado Machine. " Video-WMP Video-QT He touched on immigration, oil, the Middle East, judges and a host of other topics that have divided our country since Bush took office. I did enjoy GWB leading the charge to clean up Baseball's steroid problem: " But I have faith in baseball commissioner W. Bush when he says, " We will find the steroid users if we have to tap every phone in America! " Do you have a favorite line? Here's a link to their homepage so show them some love. (rough transcript by reader Steve) Announcer: And now, a message from the President of the United States. President Al Gore: " Good evening, my fellow Americans. In 2000 when you overwhelmingly made the decision to elect me as your 43rd president, I knew the road ahead would be difficult. We have accomplished so much yet challenges lie ahead. In the last 6 years we have been able to stop global warming. No one could have predicted the negative results of this. Glaciers that once were melting are now on the attack. As you know, these renegade glaciers have already captured parts of upper Michigan and northern Maine, but I assure you: we will not let the glaciers win. Right now, in the 2nd week of May 2006, we are facing perhaps the worst gas crisis in history. We have way too much gasoline. Gas is down to $0.19 a gallon and the oil companies are hurting. I know that I am partly to blame by insisting that cars run on trash. I am therefore proposing a federal bailout to our oil companies because- hey if it were the other way around, you know the oil companies would help us...read on " > > Precisely †" mercury is mercury. > > Contrary to the portrayal by some of Al Gore as a " tree hugger " , he > and the environmentalists aren't just about Global Warming. Guest guest
I unfortunately missed it. But I did hear his speech 2 months ago that hammered the administration for it's lawlessness and constitutional infractions. He also said how dare we be so arrogant to think our problems are worse than our founding father's problems and dangers they were facing at the time of the writing of the constitution. It was a brilliant speech and I was cheering while listening to it by myself. Maybe it was a good thing for him to be away from politics for a while to get back to his routs, the environment.- Re: Apology for " Autism Every Day " post Plus, he sure as shit was funny on SNL last Saturday.
