Oh, yeah

That's my experience with BVR both times I have used them.( minus the

in my own home part) I did end up taking a crappy job that really

hurt my hands but I needed money and I wanted to work at home so I

could expand my family. My counselor threatened to close my case if I

did not take any job offer. I never told her the part about my

desires to have another child. She probably would have closed my case

for that one too.

During college/grad school, my counselors were great. All they wanted from me

was good grades.

Maybe you could ask for another counselor. What type of work are you hoping to

find? Good luck. I hope everything works out.

Voc Rehab question

Please advise me on your experiences and/or knowlege of vocation

rehabilitation services.

Currently my VR {called MRC in this state} worker that was good, left to

have her baby.

Her replacement has derailed the plans and evaluations me and the former

counselor set up.

The new counselor is trying to make me do jobs that are physically

impossible, innappropriate and a danger to my health, to do.

I keep politely informing my VR/MRC person about my health situation

and she keeps trying to bully my muscles into obeying her command.

I'm being bitched out by her for not applying to a sheltered workshop

for the {retarded} developmentally delayed, Wal*mart greeter, or doing a

job that involves managing mentally ill individuals with daily violent

outbursts.

My current VR/MRC 'counselor' acts very controlling, demanding,

dismissive of my real disabilities, and treats me like a 2nd class

citizen in my own home.

She even tries to order my own employed assistants around and at other

times tries to 'catch' me as 'lieing' by demanding me to physically

demonstrate if I can't reach, lift, etc.

Have any members here dealt with this?

As a retired VR counselor, I can tell you that the RSA has mandated....in

1975....that you are entitled to an appeals process. Contact your State's

Advocacy Inc. office to represent your interests during your appeal.

Hi Amy

I'm just starting in my major to be some kind of rehabilitation specialist. I

obviously don't know much, yet, but I do know that your VR person is way out of

line. I would suggest you speak with a supervisor and document everything your

VR person has said.

This question may seem really out of line, and feel free to say no, but would

you mind if I shared your story with my casework professor & class as an example

of what NOT to do? Thanks for sharing your story. It has helped me!

Appeals processes need decisions and this VR person isn't putting her

decisions down on paper as any denial or not.

Thank you MJ and share away if it helps others not have to be treated

Wow - I have problems with my VR counselor, but not like the problems you have.

Mine speaks down to me when she is around just me or me and my friends... but if

my mother is in the room she speaks totally different to me.

She thinks that when I graduate that I will magically get the higest HR position

available! I have no work experience so I know this is not the case! She also

seems to think that if I am able to get a job that I will make enough money to

take care of all my medical needs (she obviously has no idea!) I am concerned

about getting a full time job and losing my medical benefits and so forth, but

she doesn't see that.

She told me just the other day that she put her job on the line for my case with

my car several times (she's full of it). She's doing the process work that is

supposed to be done, thats it.

This one retires next year... so I will likely be dealing with a new counselor

while I am doing the whole job search process... so I hope I dont run into the

problems you have had!

This totally reminded me of something else. My counselor was being stupid about

something, as she often is, and I called regional to complain... it is supposed

to be annon... tell me why the next day I got a phone call from my counselor

stating that she knew I called to complain and she wanted me to confront her

with my problems! I did that and she did nothing, so I went over her head... and

it got me NO WHERE!!! On another situation I emailed the head of our regional on

my car issue when she refused to give me a copy of my eval, HE emailed me back

and carbon copied the original email to my counselor..... so once again, my

complaints were not confidential and I was made to feel like an idiot later on!

I feel very lucky now to live in land's Montgomery county after

hearing these horror stories. My Voc Rehab counselor is great. They

have an independent living group that gives extremely valuable

information about working while on SSI or SSDI. The county runs

employment training workshops that are actually informative and

helpful. And the MDA clinic here mailed me a detailed list of all

their approved vendors, clinic locations, and even the contact

information for the above-mentioned IL group. (Amazingly the local

MDA seems aware of the fact we have lives beyond going to clinic

appointments.) Even the public transportation people are nice. Very

strange to me, compared to the disgruntled service I got back in

Ohio. I'm telling you, move to Silver Spring with me. :)

Lori,

Actually it's not nearly as snowy here as it was in Ohio. In fact,

they called off the kids' schools today because of 1/2 inch of snow.

It definitely wouldn't have been a snow day in Cincinnati. I

wouldn't mind living somewhere a tad bit warmer year round, but I

think this will do for now. :)

That is great! I know you like to stay warm and love your space heater as much

as I do!

While I'm thinking about trying to staying warm...this past holiday season, I

treated myself to the " Snuggie " (the blanket with the sleeves).  It is the

ultimate blanket!  It is soft and keeps me so toasty warm!  If you are thinking

about getting one, it  is totally worth it.  It is $35 00 including shipping.

You get two of them.  ( https://www.getsnuggie.com/flare/next )

Btw, I enjoy your posts on Twitter.

When in bed, sometimes I don't put my arms thru and have wrap my head in

the warm and soft sleeves. It keeps my head nice and warm...especially on hair

Amy,

Many responses to this so I apologize if I'm repeating what one may

have said.

I recently got a job as a DOR counselor - and I've seen this happen.

However, according to our guidelines we are to work by - the CLIEMT

(you) are the one to make the choices - this is what we call " informed

choice " - but also, the counselor could be giving you limited or

unrealistic choices.

Also, when a counselor leaves, cases are transferred in a way that is

very difficult to provide the client with the best services - because

its stepping into a blind situation and one where a counselor already

has to take on more cases than they can handle.

Either way - it should have been made clear, and legally we must tell

our clients that if they cannot resolve an issue with the counselor,

to then go to the supervisor, and higher if need be. And yes, you can

request a new counselor.

Hope that helps and I was not repeating what has been said!

What is CLIEMT?

My current counsilor keeps trying to bully me into {for lack of

better terms} retard and loony tune sheltered sweatshop work that

pays less than minimum wage.

That is not appropriate for me.

I would be alongside people who are prone to dementia and violence

while being expected to tear rags, sort trash for recycling, pull

weeds, rake lawns, sort used clothing, etc.

I don't know many SMAers with Type 1 Werding Hoffmans disease and

160+ I.Q.s who should do this work

Greetings

I am jumping in this conversation late in the game here, but all the same I wish

to comment on the degrating experience I've encountered with my first vrc; that

was in the late '70's :/

though i hear your understandable frustration amy, i am uncomfortable with

you using words like retard and loony tune. i think it vital we dont try to

position ourselves higher than others in the disability hierarchy which we

should all be trying to make obsolete.

That's why I wrote- quote " for lack of better terms "

Woyuld you like to be forced to be at the mercy of an other wised

abled bodied but disabled minded person who rubs their own shit,

regurge, snot, semen, on whatever they can reach?

How bout a person who grabs you to jump up and down with them while

screaming the lyrics to " Yellow Submarine " for non stop hours all day?

Or a guy with dementia trying to feel you up cause you look like his

wife from over 40 yrs ago?

Or get beaten with a desk knick knack by a crazy person after

saying " Happy Birthday Jimmy "

These things really have happened.

these sorts of things happen when the people with these conditions are not

offerered the support/supervision they need, similar to how we would sit

stinking of shit and BO if we couldnt access the support we also need.

please see that all disabled people are better united in accessing the

support/supervision they need, and focus on that rather than labeling other

disabled people as a risk to you purely because of their condition.

my mum has dementia and i safely spend a lot of time with her in a

residential home full of people you might disrectfully label " crazy " (as well

as people with dementia it also accommodates elderly people with mental

health issues).

i spent a lot of time choosing a home for her where i felt she would be safe

and well supported/supervised. the difference between the homes i looked at

wasnt the medical conditions of the people who lived there but rather the

management culture and staff.

therefor again please target the support structures and management culture

on the places that you find offensive rather than the disabled people in

them.

cheers

Yess I knowwwwwwww thattttttt. Try to Keep to the Context

please. I'm not the enemy here. I'm not the person responsible for

badly managed care situations.

Would you like it if me being placed in a dementia center took away

resources for the propper care of your mother? The money and walls of

these programs don't stretch to fit every person with any

disabilities being lumped together.

Here's a few facts , not wanting a label put on me

innappropriatly because of my needs for wheelchair access dosen't

mean I'm labeling your mother.

Having a phsical disability dosen't qualify me to be an autism,

mental health, or dementia, miracle worker.

Having all the compassion in the world dosen't mean I'm responsible,

able, or obligated, to fixing these fucked systems.

There's no solidarity going to happen between me and somone who can't

learn beyond a tellatubby episode, stop slapping their own ears into

mush, or remember what year we are living in. " All disabilities " - as

you put it- realy can not meet your unrealistic ideals to unite and

help each other.

Me working myself into an earlier grave isn't going to help anybody.

You have safe and meaningful visits with your mother at a dementia

care center, good for you- but where does that compare with me being

told to work under minimum wage at the mercy of violent

schizophrenics off of their medications in a state shafting day

program?

My topic was about being steered to work in situations that are

dangerous to people with SMA.

Since many of the SMAers I've met have been lumped innappropriately

with people who's disabilities affect their ability to reason, act

appropriately, function in social and work situations, during their

entire lives, I figured there'd be some support here.

Instead I'm getting another lecture from the ivory tower. [AGAIN]
