`MINERAL OIL

When my son was a baby he had cancer and had terrible constipation from nerve damage and the chemo (we didn't know he had autism then so it may have been a factor as well). The mineral oil worked really well for him. You may have to use alot more than the dosage on the bottle. My son as a baby needed a tablespoon instead of the teaspoon recommended on the bottle. We mixed it with his baby food and he ate it. One important thing however, is that it can be dagerious if it gets into the lungs so you shouldn't try to strongarm a kid into taking it if they are upset as they might aspirate it.

Actually THAT IS EXACTLY what my son had!!! I'm a little excited right now to correspond with you because you are the first person I've come across who has had this experience too. The stories I could tell you!!!! But you already know them all because you have lived them. I should tell you that I shouldn't have explained it to you at first as constipation because that wasn't truly what it was. When he did poop it wasn't the contipated kind. My son had the leakage. He was so backed up inside that when they did diagnostic imaging he was completely ENTIRELY compacted. That was quite a sight. Because of the compaction he would go a long time without pooping - just smearing his underwear all the time with leakage until boom there was this MASSIVE massive mess. For year and years. It was just like you described with your own child. I too t! ried everything. I took him to homeopathic doctors, gastroenterologists, I even tried secretin (which I really regret now because it was offlabel and the longterm effects aren't known). In the end the solution really was as simple as mineral oil. I know it doesn't sound possible because such a major problem should surely take a major solution. I understand that because everything you have gone through with this we went through too. I was sure the mineral oil didn't work at first but hung in there because my son's new pediatrician who had recommended it had given me a handout that explained it and it made sense enough. I wish I still had that to pass it on to you. He was very reassuring and told me to be patient with it, that it would eventually work. And he was right. It didn't work at first, it took a long time. But as the handout and the doctor explained there was no muslce in the colon/intest! ines - what was originally there had atrophied and now would have to be built back up. That takes time. So we gave him the mineral oil for months before we started to see a measurable difference. Within two years he was having normal bowel movements completely unaided without the mineral oil. Because of the bowel problems he'd had all of his life my son was literally 12 years old before he had normal bowels. That's so sad. He's 14 now. Being able to have bathroom independence was life changing for our entire family. Before that my son would make the most outrageous messes because there was no telling when or where he would have one of these horrific bowel movements. If it happened when he was along he'd of course take his pants off and try to clean himself up. Because of his autism, to outsiders it looked like he had a behavioral problem - like he played with his feces. You would walk ! into a room and there would be poop smeared across walls, rugs,..literally every surface he could wipe his body parts on... because that's what he would try to do - wipe it off. We never knew when it would happen. He could be playing in a fastfood restaurant playstructure and when he'd come down the slide he'd have poop down his pantlegs in his shoes on the slide, etc. Public places closed down for cleanup. We ruined birthday parties. It was terrible. It also effected his education because the school system wouldn't let him mainstream because he wasn't independent in the bathroom. So he missed out on that valuable opportunity in pr-k and kidnergarten when it was still a possibility for him. People wouldn't babysit because they didnt' want to clean up the mess if it happened. It was all horrible. My daughter couldn't have friends over because of the embarrassment it caused. She also has a weak stomach and dev! eloped vomiting problems because she couldn't handle the poopy mess that ended up everywhere. I'd have one kid pooping and the other throwing up. And I spent my life cleaning up stuff nobody should have to clean up. So having been through all that and now having it completely behind us, I am for lack of a better word - relieved - to have that chapter of our life over with forever!!! I really do hope that you give the mineral oil a second try. Being compacted like that causes terrible stomach pain so I hope your child recovers soon and this might really be the solution. Atleast this can be said about the mineral oil: It's affordable and noninvasive. Refrigeration seems to help make it less icky feeling when your child first takes it. After awhile they'll get so used to it that it won't be a big deal at all. We used the spoon dispensers used for cough syrup and it was really easy to give it to him. He also needed plenty of time in the bathroom. We gave him books to look at. Fortunately around the time we started mineral oil he also started ABA and it was easy to get him motivated to try to go to the bathroom - even if nothing happened he needed to have the practice of sitting on the potty and being rewarded for it. good luck. mmoyer <mmoyer@...> wrote:

Thank you for your input. My son had leakage but that was because of an impaction and leakage around it. He would have a massive results when he did go. We did use every possible solution including mineral oil. So the soluti! on for my son isn't that easy, unfortunately. Thanks. Martha

S! ure wish I could have an interpretation of what such values might mean. We lost our insurance and I couldn't get back to see the doctor. Finally, have it back, however. Martha
