Guest guest
I have an idea for everyone. I live just outside of little Gettysburg PA, home to Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address and the civil war. On the corner in the “tourist” area is a bank. The bank has big window boxes. I see displays for various things there all the time – breast cancer awareness, girl scouts, etc. I think April, it should have an Autism Awareness display in it. It’s quiet, it’s passive, it’s effective. Not only do you hit the business owners (who might donate to your local support group etc) who use the bank walking in to do bank business, but other community people and tourists. I bet there is a bank like this in every town. Ask now, and hope they don’t already have April’s display promised. I am going to make up project boards with stats, autism early warning signs, pics, links and info. I am also going to supply the bank with printed brochures on autism and ribbons to hand out free for anyone who wants one. This is a good, cheap way to get autism more in the public view. If anyone has anything to add, please share. Holly
Guest guest
Holly, We do this each year at our son's school in the main hall display as well as the local libraries. We also offer information about local resource agencies. I also have a real rough top ten list of things folks can do minimally that I'll e-mail back to folks if you contact me. We also send PSA's to local news and radio stations. They are obligated to run community awareness peices and will do so if you sent them in the proper format. We also do a new one each year for our local cable channel and then they use it on other cable stations as well. Loads of stuff to do. We take information to our school board meeting w/ribbons and resources each year, do so also to our local township board and have them proclaim autism awareness month. Same with our state legislators for a state proclaimation. We then put a face on who to contact about ASD. Our son accompanies us to all events as well and folks know him and follow his progress. Hope this helps, Carolyn P.S. I also have a document for folks to host a first responder event in your community. This is very important and if folks would like this e-mail me. > > I have an idea for everyone. I live just outside of little Gettysburg PA, > home to Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and the civil war.
