Guest guest
Again with this??????? You know... my mom used to drag me to church every week, and about the age of 8 I figured it out to be a sham. Please I am not knocking religion... well... maybe I am... I am knocking the catholic religion b/c it was the one forced down my throat for years... I am glad I had the right mind to not get confirmed and play the game. Maybe the kid is better off. Church denies Communion to autistic boy http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/0304communion0304.html Church denies Communion to autistic boy Clancy The Arizona Republic Mar. 4, 2006 12:00 AM The Catholic Church has told the parents of a 10-year-old autistic boy that, because the child cannot consume the host, he is not receiving Communion properly. Until he does, church officials say, he cannot partake of the church's most meaningful sacrament.
Guest guest
The article is written so badly that it is very difficult to understand what actually happened. The media tend to look for very simple angles, and are not above completely distorting something because it is easier to report, or the reporter simply didn't understand what they were writing about. The media hate complexity and nuance, that's no news to anyone on this list, and things in the Catholic church are rarely simple and straightforward. I would not be quick to judgement here until there is some decent reporting on the facts. > > Again with this??????? > You know... my mom used to drag me to church every week, and about the age of 8 I figured it out to be a sham. It was disconcerting to our family to read such "off topic" hate. As I recall RKJ is also Catholic. Guest guest
it was hardly hate. recall I was raised catholic. Nor did I say all catholics are bad. Don't read into things. Guest guest
Jack, Your letter makes excellent points about the danger and unfairness of stereotypes. But you go too far to characterize 's remarks as hate. To me, her remarks come from a place of fear and betrayal and not of the empty ignorance that drives haters. Like many " recovering " Catholics I know personally, 's wounds are still fresh and painful. But I have seen many of my " XRC " friends return to the church as time passes -- time allowing a different perspective to emerge. The healing the church can provide can be compelling for one's family and often overrides, and allows forgiveness of early bad experiences. I say all this not to promote the Catholic Church, I am not even a Christian, myself -- but only to ask that we go easy on our neighbors in religion-inflicted pain. Trust that she will eventually wash away herself the splinter in her eye that we have been so quick to point out. Lenny ps. With the retiring baby boomers and the loss of the mercury generation to autism, we all will become quite dependent on the high birth rate of Catholics to replenish our lot. God bless the Catholics, we're gonna need them more than ever and sooner rather than later. > > M. Guest guest
Jack, I am with you. I found 's remarks to be most offensive. Calling someone's religion a " sham " and a " game " is simply uncalled for unless she was posting on the AgainstReligion@... group. She needs to take it elsewhere. Our parish has been nothing short of stellar and accommodating with our son. Jean M. Guest guest
There's a parallel between the ongoing autism/mercury denial and the Catholic Church's belaed public affirmation of sexual abuse victims. After years of pressure from families victimized by pedophile priests, church leaders finally realized that the issue must be openly dealt with to restore public confidence. As ugly as it was, the corruption was acknowledged. Still the Church endures. Vaccines should not be considered sacrosanct. Honest self- examination, not continued denial, is essential for the program's survival. With heightened pressure from the public, the policymaking bureaucrats will realize that they must change their one-size-fits- all paradigm and start considering genetic diversity and environmental exposures. Not to mention rooting out corruption and making amends for past errors. Hokkanen Minneapolis > > > > M. Guest guest
Yes of course you're right , Lenny. I'm certainly not qualified to say what emotion was behind 's remarks. I was concerned for the feelings of those who would feel slighted. I'm sure is a lovely girl. I've read her posts and she's done nice things. okeedokee let's get back on topic, shall we? made a good point about admitting errors and working proactively to make no more. Guest guest
ok, fine... That is right... I am big anti-religion hating jackass. Thanks for pointing it out to me. You all know me so well. I discriminate against relgion... I am a racist, I am a sexist.. You nailed it. Actually sarcasm aside, you should know, I hate all people. Thanks for reminding me. Let me point out some things... Historically the Catholic church was democrat, but as the members of the catholic church got more money, suddenly the political affliation turns republican. (Now, since you people read into what I am saying, let me tell you, I am pointing out a FACT that is listed in political science text books --take it how you will) This is a church who has become all about the money. until not too long ago our church used to print a list of how much money everyone gave each year... once even sent a letter to my grandpa when he was raising 4 kids on nothing back in the day, that "You could do better" As an adult, I have returned a couple times, and is it a coincidence that everytime I do they skip the sermon in favor of an appeal for more donations? Did they really need the sparkling hand-carved Italian marble alter??? or maybe would a simple table been enough, and they could have done other things with the money? See, its on a small scale like that, and its on a grander scale thru the whole organization. The catholic church has two big black eyes right now, and defend them if you want, but for me they are corrupt. Religion and believing in God should have NOT A DAMN thing to do with money, or pretty alters, OR REFUSING DISABLED PEOPLE. LOCALLY there have been several families ASK TO LEAVE mass b/c their autistic children were disruptive. I know 4 familes locall, all from different churches that have LEFT the church b/c of this. Nationally this happens often, and nationally this is not the first (or the last) time we will hear about discrimination in the church. Do I feel a group like this is a SHAM? DAMN RIGHT I DO. Now, if you truly want it dropped feel free to spank me off list, jwebs94@... OR you could truly drop it! In the meantime I will not be quiet about ANYONE refusing our kids ANYTHING based on disability. Whether its the pope or the president or Joe Shmoe. Read that last part twice... if someone is wronging our kids we need to sound off about it. There is NO scared cow here.
Guest guest
I probably shouldn't relate this story, but I can't resist.. When my brother was an infant, my parents decided to leave the catholic church, for reasons I'm not aware of. And so none of us, my brothers or myself, were ever baptized in the catholic church. One day, as the story goes, the priest paid a visit to my parents house and told my mother that her child was a bastard, because he wasn't being baptised in the catholic church. And my brother, lying in her arms as he spoke to her and wise to the ways of the world even then apparently, looked up at the priest and said ... " Pfffffttttt! " My mother, I am told, had nothing to say to him.
Guest guest
, I'm a devout Christian and totally understand your feelings, not just the Catholic Church, but ALL churches. Unfortunately, the leadership of all churches are horribly human, and often times, those worldly characteristics come out in leadership issues. That said, I know many wonderful, Christ-filled Catholics, and I try to be a Christ-filled Protestant...though I just left another extremely annoying dr appointment and would talk about if I wouldn't show how carnal I am at the moment, lol.
