Guest guest
I wish I would¹ve watched LA Ink! I watched the House episode but I didn¹t think they did a very good job at portraying disabled life, let alone SMA. What did other people think? Guest guest
House is a rather crass doc who should have had his medical license revoked a long time ago, I don't think it was a very realistic portrayal of treating someone with SMA. Guest guest
No definitely not realistic in terms of sma. But what really got me was when the guy with sma said he wanted to die because he had lived 40 long years in this useless body and now he just wanted to be free...or some such. Gimmee a break it was worse than the telethon!!!!!!! :-P On 10/10/07 12:02 AM, " Buck " <jared.buck@...> wrote: > House is a rather crass doc who should have had his medical license revoked > a long time ago, I don't think it was a very realistic portrayal of treating > someone with SMA. > > On 10/9/07, <nicoleroberts@... > <mailto:nicoleroberts%40usfamily.net> > wrote: >> > >> > I wish I would¹ve watched LA Ink! Guest guest
LOL, i agree there. I have a number of friends with SMA (including my best friend Radmila) and never once have I heard them complain about their quality of life. SMA may not be curable as it stands right now but most certainly one with it can have a very good quality of life. Radmila keeps telling me about all of her trips all over Europe and how much fun she has. I think it's important to enjoy what you have instead of moping about what you don't. I'm hard of hearing and wear a hearing aid but I don't complain about the things I can't hear or understand sometimes - I just make do with what I have. Guest guest
I saw LA ink and House! It was so weird to see SMA in the media twice in one day! About the House episode, I think he said 20 years not 40 and honestly I can understand him and I don't think its far from some peoples truth. Of course it would have been better if they portrayed him as a happy person with a full life, but I think he knew it was his time to go. Poor doggie though Re: Did you watch LA Ink??? Guest guest
I was offended by the guy's comment, I mean seriously, just because you can't walk doesn't mean you want to die. I think it made us look like wimps waiting to die. Simone Album: http://community.webshots.com/user/ssegerter Website: http://simoneegerter.org " Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Guest guest
I guess I'm the oddball here. Guest guest
Tom, I couldn't agree more with you. Guest guest
I would say that, like most people, we have good days and bad days. I have to agree that life is what you make it. By far, my good days far outweigh the not-so-good ones. Much of my happiness has to do with the choices I have made in my life and where they have lead me (college-->meet and married awesome, wonderful man who is my heart and life-->graduate school-->dream job-->ability to buy dream house and modified vans-->etc.). Had I choose to stay at home and live with my parents until they were no longer able to care for me, I would surely be living/dying in a nursing home bed compliments of Medicaid. Yeah, feeding myself is a struggle these days and many nights I aspirate and wake up choking. Big deal, we adjust and do the best we can. Well, that's my 2.5 cents for today. Take it or leave it. Guest guest
The guy on the TV show was depressed. Who wouldn¹t be depressed when they are so sick and surrounded by obviously idiot drs!!?? When our life situation is hard or hopeless feeling we get depressed, that is ONLY NATURAL --even animals get depressed when life is hard or hopeless. In any given year 10% of americans are suffering from depression ‹ in a lifetime 1 in 3 people will at some point suffer from depression. But SMA does not equal depression. Depression comes when our life situation seems hard or unbearable. Yes, sometimes having SMA causes our lives to get hard, but so do a lot of other things like being alone, having no friends or family around, having no job or being unhappy at work most people who have depression do not have SMA or a disability. a large percent of elderly people are depressed because our society does not value older people so they are treated very poorly, not given the care or attention they need, dumped in a nursing home or left home to watch miserable TV shows all day!!!! ;-) If we are physically ill and can¹t breathe or feel sick or in pain all the time then it¹s pretty normal to have depressed thoughts. However, being disabled doesn¹t make us depressed, our life situation makes us depressed and many times our life situation can be altered with support services ‹ IF we are lucky enough to have support services offered in our area which I realize a lot of us aren¹t...but have you ever wondered why there aren¹t more supports offered (such as homecare, accessible transportation, ability to get a job, people interesting in having a romantic relationship with people with disabilities, etc etc)???? These things are not commonly available to us because our society in general views people with disabilities as useless and tragic so why invest money, time, and/or resources into a population who they themselves (us) even feel would be better off dead??? If we don¹t value our lives then no one else will and thus the cycle of depression just grows and grows. This show was just another validation for why NOT to hire or invest in people with disabilities. Yay just what we need! Yes I hate how they do it, but it's what works.
