Nice to meet you, Jeff!

I'm , and I live in Piedmont, SC (not far from Greenville). I do

not have SMA,

nor does any member of my family. I am merely here as a volunteer. I organized

an SMA

Family Gathering here in Greenville this year. One of my most important

functions is

helping with insurance appeals. If you ever have a problem with your insurance

company,

I'm your gal!

I also keep a blog over at FighterMom, all about insurance issues (which reminds

me, I

need to update it!) You can see it here:

Can you fill me in on the whole service dog thing. I've never known exactly

did you learn to train him? Thanks!

Hi Beth,

There are many agencies that provide fully-trained service dogs. They are very

costly but many organizations can help you find funding or can even provide you

with the dog for free. I chose not to go that route. My story is below.

At the age of 2 months, we adopted Kegan (a flat-coated retreiver) from a rescue

shelter that happened to also be a training facility for service dogs. Our

intentions were to be her " puppy handlers " until she was 1 year, and at 1 year,

if we deemed she was smart enough, we would take her back to the rescue shelter

for them to train her as my service dog. During her 1st year of life, we loved,

coddled, and completed her obedience training with her with the help of a friend

who trains & shows Collies professionally. My husband did most of this training

because it required physical capabilities that I don't have. Anyhow, we

discovered that she was indeed very intelligent and she loved being given

commands. After she turned a year, we made an appointment with the rescue

shelter to develop her service training plan and schedule. Our first (and last)

meeting with them did not go well at all. We quickly discovered that they

basically beat their dogs into

submission. Their example dogs were very clearly afraid of them and I did not

want Kegan to be afraid of me. I strongly believe in reward based training

versus harsh correction. The woman who was speaking to us took Kegan to check

her obedience training and to check some things with her. After a few minutes,

she tried to force Kegan's mouth open to shove a rope in it. Kegan snapped at

her and, had we not been standing there, she would have hit Kegan. I didn't

blame Kegan for snapping. A woman she did not know was trying to force

something in her mouth without even letting Kegan get a little used to her. Any

dog would have reacted that way.

After this meeting, we told them thanks but no thanks and decided to complete

her training on our own. I did hours of research on the internet and spoke to a

few professionals in the field. Slowly, over the next few months she learned

all of the commands I would need her to know to help me. She picks things up

for me, hits automatic door buttons, hits elevator buttons (I use a laser

pointer and she knows to look for the red dot), and gets my husband if I am

calling for him. She is also naturally protective of me and does not like it

when people come up behind me. Several months into her training, I was in a

severe car accident and I was not able to work with her for many months. Once I

was able to work with her again, we had a few minor set backs but they were

quickly corrected.

Today, she goes everywhere with me as my service dog. She has a service dog

harness and she knows how to act when she is working. The only time I have had

any issues with her, like many other people, is a few times when she has come

across other " service dogs. " Most dogs she's interacted with have been very

good experiences; however, she has been growled at and attacked by two service

dogs that were trained by agencies. This has made her very fearful of other

dogs in harnesses so she is now very tense around them. I also did see a slight

behavior change in her while I was pregnant; I believe she felt that she needed

to be more protective of me at that time. I've heard of normal pet dogs acting

this way when a female in the house is pregnant.

This is just my story of my self-trained Kegan :)

Overall, though,

I'm a pretty happy go lucky guy. ;)

Anyways, just wanted to introduce myself and say hi. You guys will be hearing

more from

me, like it or not. *grin*

PS. I run a web community for wheelchair users that may be of interest to some

of you. It's

called " The Wheeled Ones " and is a place where you can build a profile, have a

blog, share

photos, videos, and music, and even host a group on a special interest you have

(i.e. I'm

hosting groups on SMA, Braun Entervans, and Service Dogs, but the sky's the

limit.)

Anyways, it's not meant to be competitive to this list, just a little something

I put together

for everyone who lives life on wheels!

It's located at:

http://www.wheeledo nes.com/

I hope to see some of you there!

Hello, everyone. I'm a 31 year old guy, living in Charlotte, NC, with type 2

to find this group, as it seems like you guys discuss an awful lot that's

relevant to my life.

So, thanks for having this.

I have worked for the last 10 years as a web developer. Some things have changed

recently that throw my whole professional life into turmoil, but that's for

another

message. Beyond computers, I enjoy video games, playing poker online, watching

movies

and TV, and reading the occasional book (eBooks are easier for me.)

I live alone, in my own home, and have a black German Shepherd named Uma (who is

still

being trained as a service dog, by me...slowly. ) I pay for PCAs privately,

although with the

recent change in my employment situation, I'm looking into alternatives.

Overall, though,

Hello Jeff,

your site is pretty nice. I am impressed. I have a son with sma 2

and he is 10. I was going to join my self. It looks as if it is more

for adults anyways. Lots of awesome resources.

I live in Mead Wa close to Spokane, Coeurd'Alene Idaho.

I tried to sign up on your wheeled ones site but, It kept on sayin i

had the wrong password. I will try again.

Talk to you later
