I hhave never heard that either. Brett has not had any dental problems- the

dentist has always been surprised by how " perfect " his teeth have been. Our only

issue is Brett opening his mouth wide enough. Maybe some others will have ideas.

Dental problems???

Has anyone ever heard of there being dental issues associated with

having SMA? sees a dentist who specializes in special needs

kids. When she was born, she had no enamel on her baby teeth along

with some other teeth issues. Her dentist says that it's not unusual

for kids with Down Syndrome or CP to have genetic teeth problems for a

variety of reasons not just because they can't brush well. The

dentist suggested that poorly deveoped teeth and a lack of enamel may

be associated with SMA. But, I can't find anyone to confirm if that's

true. Has anyone else ever heard this?

Thanks,

h (11) also has severe dental issues. Unfortunately, I can't find a

pediatric specialist that is even willing to see her! She too had very little

enamel on her baby teeth, and when her permanent teeth started coming in, they

already had some areas of decalcification. Now some of her baby teeth (molars)

are still trying to come out, but instead of getting loose and coming out

normally, they are breaking off into pieces and coming out.

I've been looking for a dentist that will see her for the past 6 years. I'm

afraid of what is to come if I can't find one soon!

Oh, she also has had issues with the *open bite* that many kids with SMA have.

i have never had much problem with my teeth. i had the normal cavities and

such as a child but have not had any cavities in over 10 years.

i am guessing that an " open bite " is when teeth don't touch. i do have an

open bite in the front. braces really didn't do much for me. basically, what

they told me is that if i want it fixed, it will have to be surgically done,

which is not going to happen.

is this something common for people with SMA? i have never heard that. my

brother has an open bite on the side of his mouth so i always figured it was

genetic. that and the fact that the dentist always said i had such a big

tongue which probably pushed my teeth forward on the top. who knows?

I've never heard of that.  does have a really pronounced overbite and I

have seen numerous pictures of others with SMA with the same thing, I've always

wondered if its SMA related.  hasn't been to a dentist in over a decade

due to not being able to open his mouth nearly enough for a cleaning.

By " open bite " do you mean that some SMA kids have trouble opening

and holding their mouth open wide enough for the dentist? Or, do

you mean something else?

Bernie has normal enamel. Maybe enamel problems is a diet issue?

He has the open bite (tho' my healthy daughter also has that.)

Open bite means the top and bottom teeth don't meet in the front -

usually you need braces to fix this.

Hi ,

I am 28 and I've only had 2 cavities in my whole life. I think the dentist

doesn't know what he's talking about.

Take care!

I agree - I am 37 years old with type 2. I have only had 1 cavity in

my life and that was about a year ago. I don't think there is it has

anything to do with SMA.
