Guest guest
Hi Alice, I'm sorry this is happening. I'm now 40 and have only seen a slight increase in my blood pressure - It's usually around 115/75. It's a little higher when I have a UTI or have pain...hip, back, catheter, etc. I hope you figure it out soon. Guest guest
Hi Alice, I'm 58 with SMA 3. I wasn't aware of my high blood pressure until I was hospitalized a little over a year ago. My doctor said it is something that generally comes with age and he doesn't think it has anything to do with my SMA. I take 1/2 of a 25 MG tablet of Hydroclorathiazide when I get up (I have odd hours but he said that was OK, just take it when I get up) and I take 100 MG of Toprol XL at right before I go to bed. This is working well for me and I'm getting 2 extra benefits from this medication. 1. It has slowed my heart rate down from 120 or more to the 70's to 80's. I've always had a fast heart rate and didn't know what to do to slow it down. But it always worried me in the back of my mind. 2. Since taking this medication I hardly ever have migraine headaches which I used to have all the time. They were not severe or debilitating ( I've had those kind but only 3 or 4 in my life) but they were true migraines which I took 1/2 tablet of Tylenol and Codeine for. But I hardly ever have one anymore. What a bonus that is. You didn't say how old you are but in my case it seems to be a symptom of age progression, not SMA progression. I only weigh 75 lbs so my Dr and I started out with a very low dosage and increased it slightly until we got the desired results. One thing I just remembered.. I have a friend who is a quad and weighs about twice as much as I do who tried taking Hydraclorathiazide and it make him so sleepy and lethargic that he literally could not stay awake. His doctor changed the Rx and he is fine. Let me know what you and your Doctor decide to do. Good luck. Guest guest
Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic (water pill). It decreases the amount of fluid in the body by increasing the amount of salt and water lost in the urine. Hydrochlorothiazide is used to lower blood pressure and to decrease edema (swelling). I have the Adult Onset of SMA..I am 48 years old and use to take HTCZ and no longer need/have to take it.... My BP runs 110/60 Take Care " Lainie H. Guest guest
I used to have high bp before I was put on the vent 2 years ago. I took Avapro for it. I no longer need meds to control it, as it runs around 110/70. Vicki ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. Guest guest
Alice, I'm only 28 but I've never had chronic issues with my blood pressure being high; even when I was pregnant, it was normal. The only time it has risen is when I am in a lot of pain that has gotten out of control or when I have a really bad pneumonia which causes me to cough my head off. Milinovich SMA Type I high blood pressure and SMA Hi everyone, My blood pressure has been slowing increasing this past year and now it's at the point where it's rather high (157/100). I have no idea why this is happening. I have SMA 2 and use a Bi-Pap at night. My diet is healthy and I don't smoke (of course). I just had an echo to see if my heart is weakening. Is this something to expect with the progression of SMA? Could it be related to cardiomyopathy? I haven't had any signs of that yet (until I get the results of the echo). Guest guest
My blood pressure is extremely high and difficult to read. My cardiologist uses a Doppler system so he can get the best read that he can. I take both Toprol and Caduet to keep it under control, which means my top number is in the 130 to 140-range. I have SMA-II and weigh about 40 pounds. I'm 33 years old and do not yet use any assistive breathing or feeding intervention. My doctor hasn't been too concerned about figuring out the cause of my high blood pressure, primarily I think, because it is controllable with the meds. Guest guest
High blood pressure could be caused by a lot of things including simply that you inherited it from your one of your parents. The only sure fire guaranteed way to permanently bring it back down without drugs is to lose weight if you are currently over weight. The most common drug used to treat high blood pressure is some form of diahretic, which makes you have to pee constantly. If you use a wheelchair during the day, that could be a problem because you will have to pee about every 15 minutes for the first few hours after taking the drug. Typically, you take the pill (like HCTZ) every morning, so I imagine you would have to make sure someone can take you to the bathroom throughout every morning. > > Hi everyone, > > My blood pressure has been slowing increasing this past year and now it's at the point > where it's rather high (157/100). Guest guest
I'm not over weight. I weigh 75 lbs.. And the medication in the dosage I take does not make me pee any more than I did before I started taking it. But you're right, that is what the medication usually does.
