No doubt there is a genetic connection. But to focus on this and ignore the

other environmental factors strikes me as somewhat obscene. Along the lines

of the refrigerator mom theory.

There are two sides to every coin. But it seems to me that too much of the

press seems intent on turning this around so that we can blame the

victims. If the vaccine makers and public health officials have damaged

only those genetically susceptible, or if those who are genetically

susceptible are managing to mate more frequently, thus increasing the

number of genetically susceptible people in the population, this in NO way

excuses what they’ve done. To suggest or imply otherwise would be pretty

debased, in my opinion. I am not sure if that is what is being attempted by

these kinds of stories--to imply that the victims are in reality at

fault--but the thought has crossed my mind…

The other part that tics me off about this is it keeps putting people like

the geeky bill gates types into the " autism " category --fueling the fire of

the neurodiverse crowd. This is NOT autism.

Everytime I come across one of their (neurodiverse) writings about how awful

us parents trying to cure our kids are, I think, " Now wait a minute...if MY

child could write like this person, and live the life of this person, I

would have no desire to " cure " him. "

But he's not. He is, at this point, currently incapable of living

independantly. Cannot take care of himself, and left to his own to survive,

he would surely die.

Why can't they see that we are not trying to eradicate them, we are instead,

at least I am, trying to get my child to their level.

And stories like this --again, make it look like autism is a good thing!!!

You " get autism " and you too can be the CEO of a high tech industry

coorporation.

(which by the way, I do not think bill gates is on the spectrum at all...I

think that whole idea of silcon valley genious/geeks being anywhere on the

spectrum is getting out of hand --I have lots of thoughts and theories on

this, but perhaps some other day)

I agree totally. Anyone who haves the functioning/health/social skills

of Bill Gates does not have autism, or has overcome it.

Someone I know actually told me here-while-back that my child has the

" ...disease everyone wants their kid to have, it's in vogue... " No, I

don't really talk to her anymore.

the TOP TWO people in the special ed dept ACTUALLY SAID

that there are not more cases of autism, that our kids are mentally retarded

and we do not want to admit it.

autistic too?

I'm sure their defense attorneys would have considered using it if it

had been so trendy...

clarification:

when i said that there may be more autisitcs in silicon valley due to

an old mercury mine, i wasn't saying that bill gates, etc al are

autistic. i had heard that the austism rate is very high there, so

was trying to explain why.
