Hi *

What do u think is the right *term* they should of use? I get so confused w/

what disabled people want to be refered to- I'm always wondering if the disabled

population will ever agree on what *we* should be refered to...

There will never be terminology that we all agree on because the only

thing we definitely know we have in common is that we have

disabilities - a very diverse " community. " I can understand why

wouldn't like " wheelchair bound. " Few of us are literally

bound to our wheelchairs. I prefer wheelchair user. But I have

fairly low expectations regarding the press's ability to portray us

with much accuracy or as whole people.

I'm sorry that happened, Jenn. When I'm feeling stuck I call it

a " crippled " day. ;) I hope he feels better soon.

I'm a special education major, and in one of my classes last fall, we

were reading/talking about the appropriate terminology. The text went

on and on about " person first language; " it's not 'disabled' or

'handicapped,' it's 'person with a disability.' Not 'autistic,' but

'person with autism.' Etc, etc. Finally, the text mentioned that it is

okay to call a person blind or deaf; those communities don't require

person first language. That was the point where I started ranting to a

roommate, " How come she can be blind and he can be deaf, but I'm not

allowed to be disabled? This is discrimination! No fair! " There are

definitely words that have different connotations, but stretching

" disabled " into " person with a disability " is just a mouthful, it's no

more or less offensive.

I just find political correctness amusing. :)

We do have a Hoyer lift, but we're loaning it to a friend because our

house is so small its size makes it pretty impractical and she

actually could use it. She offered to return it to us ASAP but Lee

thought it really woudn't help the situation that much because our bed

is so high off the ground, etc.
