Guest guest
My daughter uses her cough machine everyday ... it is such a great machine especially when she is sick! The air can move however you set it ... fast or slow ..... but yes you do want the air to move quickly in and out ... that it what triggers you to cough! If you have any other questions please feel free to ask! Shaylene
Guest guest
you can adjust the settings so the pressure for both inhale and exhale are set to your needs. jvandyke <jvandyke@...> wrote: I had a question for anyone that has ever seen, or especially used, one of the Cough Assist machines. The pics I saw on the weebsite made it look as if it does the air in and out very slowly. Is this true? I've always needed the air to go out of my lungs FAST in most cases to do any good. I've never gotten to see one in person, and from talking to people and companies in my town, won't get to see one without a purchase or a stay in the hospital. I do keep hearing that most people do like their machines, but am still wondering if the cough is abrupt, or just a slow exhale? Guest guest
I HATE this machine & wish I could drop kick it out the door! I have a cough assist but never have gotten the hang of it. Friends of mine swear by the thing. I tried all kinds of settings and all I get is snot shooting out of my nose and nasty shit getting drawn down the hose that's near impossible to keep clean and dry. Using the mask destroyed my sinuses, using the mouth piece shoots slime across the room. I feel like I've been through an assault on the lowest settings even. I hate, hate, HATE the damned cough assist! I'm happy for those who benifit from this machine. For me, pneaumonia is less painful to me than using a cough assist. > > My daughter uses her cough machine everyday ... it is such a great machine > especially when she is sick! Guest guest
I was seriously considering purchasing the cough assist. It is not covered by insurance here in Australia and will cost $10,000. However, after reading the e-mail below, I am not sure what to do. I would hate to spend $10,000 for something that isn't going to be useful. Any advice? Does anyone else have bad experiences? I'd also like to hear about good experiences too. Thanks Re: cough assist question I HATE this machine & wish I could drop kick it out the door! Guest guest
Well right now with Ian being sick it is wonderful!! he has a weak cough and the cough assist really helps him cough up the junk. His cough settles down for a while after using it and is just wonderful. I know a lot of parents that are very thankful for having one. I don't know what we would do without one. Ian has been sick quite a bit this winter and it has been a wonderful help. And as mentioned below yes it sucks his snot out too!! Which helps too because he can't blow his nose good, and he wont' let me use the " snot suckers' you would use on babies, and we dont' have a suction machine. I have exta hose to use while the other one is drying. plus I dry them wiht the bipap too. I personally don't have a bad thing to say about it when it comes to ian. He doesn't like ti if he is healthy, but he has not put up a fight at all now that he is sick. He knows it helps him. Well hope that helped ya with the good things about it. Guest guest
Jordan actually has one of the more ancient cough machines, but really likes it better...says it's more powerful (I think it's just louder and so sounds like it's more powerful). It's a manual machine, not automatic, and so we fully control how long the inhale and exhale are with an aluminum valve. That way we can adjust it on the fly to address what he feels he needs. The older automated machines had this capability as well, but it was via a small, hard to use, plastic toggle switch. I have no idea what the new ones have since Respironics purchased the cough machine from Emerson. However, I would assume that the inhale and exhale time are programmable...though someone who has a newer device would be better to comment. I would like to add that Jordan claims this is the single most beneficial piece of equipment he has. Though he likes his BiPAP (which is obviously for a completely different purpose), if he had to make a choice between one or the other I'm sure he'd pick the cough machine. Jay cough assist question I had a question for anyone that has ever seen, or especially used, one of the Cough Assist machines. Guest guest
If I can get a company to supply me with one (the doctors are helping all they can), I'll have to see if that'll work for me. jv Kristal Koehler wrote: > He also uses it when he has boogers....instead of coughing, he > blows..then we use a nasal aspirator attachment on his suction > machine and it clears it out well. > Kristal
Guest guest
I'm really appreciating the comments and feedback I've gotten on this. I know it's been taking me forever to reply to anything. Is there any way to have manual control of it on the end of a coiled cord (a pendant control), with very-easy-to-push buttons? The time I need to breathe in and blow out can vary considerably. jv

Yeah... I was kind of expecting that. It's good to hear the bad news first. What kind of hose does it use? Corrugated? If so, I'll just get it in 100 ft rolls. Pretty cheap that way. > Using the mask destroyed my sinuses, Yikes. What happened there? Many years ago, I was very prone to nosebleeds. > using the mouth piece shoots slime across the room. Yech. Why doesn't it trap it? I was hoping to use a mouth piece during the day, and use it on my trach at night (the only time I use that). > I feel like I've been through an assault on the lowest settings even. For me, pneumonia (at best) is 2 solid weeks of people pushing on my stomach, and bunches of antibiotics. Sometimes I have to have 2 people push at the same time, and I've had to have 350 lb people flop themselves over my stomach as hard as they can to hlp cough stuff up. After a week of that, I'm real sore. After 2 weeks, I'm /really/ sore. jv
Guest guest
Glad to know you can set it fast/ slow, etc. I'd want to be able to set it for slow inhale, and fast exhale. Ideally, I'd want to breathe in on my own and at my own speed, then blast everything out in one fast blow. That works best most of the time when I have people push my stomach... but I also know this won't be the same. jv journey1414@... wrote: > The air can move however you set it ... fast or slow ..... but yes > you do want the air to move quickly in and out ... that it what > triggers you to cough! Guest guest
I use that " jump on my stomach " cough technique too. Sometimes with lighter folks, I have them sit on me and kind of bounce up and down. I really need to find something I can do when I'm at home alone though. I think we've done that 2 or 3 times in my life, but it's too easy to make the ol' innards hurt doing that... > I really need to find something I can do when I'm at home alone though. > > Jenn I need that situation, too. jv
Guest guest
Ya Know- I said : " I'm happy for people the cough assist works for " ....thanX for the know-it-all-ness.[NOT] Please don't assume you know my life- Especially when I don't do that to you...... Around here medicaid only pays for 1 tube [ & NOT a corrugated one] a year. If I could've got disposable corrugated tubes I would've. AND I can't get 100ft ata time - even out of my own pocket- because of state medicaid regs. Uh- YES- I know what manuel cough assist is, the pros cons & etc. If I had the 'flop' cough assist you speak of I'd have broken ribs and eternal organ damage [i have OI as well as SMA]. > > > I HATE this machine & wish I could drop kick it out the door! > > Please don't hold back -- tell us hw you *really* feel! :-) > > > I have a cough assist but never have gotten the hang of it. > > Friends of mine swear by the thing. > > Sounds like ya either like it or hate it. > > > I tried all kinds of settings and all I get is snot > > shooting out of my nose > > Well... since I can't blow my nose, this may be kind of a gross advantage. > > > and nasty shit getting drawn down the hose that's near > > impossible to keep clean and dry. > > Yeah...
