My son is 6 and has had the cough assist for 4 years and he honestly loves it.

He is a weak type 2 (just for reference purposes) and has a pretty weak cough.

You do have to work with the machine for it to work the best- when it exhales-

you have to assist and cough with it....or it doesn't work as well...in our

experience. He also uses it when he has boogers....instead of coughing, he

blows..then we use a nasal aspirator attachment on his suction machine and it

clears it out well. Brett has still gotten pneumonia since we got it, but we are

able to handle it at home and not be hospitalized and it doesn't seem to be as

severe as before. When Brett tries to cough on his own, he says it feels like he

can't get anything up.....with the cough assist, he says it helps him cough

better. I hope this helps, good luck!

Re: cough assist question

I HATE this machine & wish I could drop kick it out the door!

I have a cough assist but never have gotten the hang of it.

Friends of mine swear by the thing.

I tried all kinds of settings and all I get is snot shooting out of

my nose and nasty shit getting drawn down the hose that's near

impossible to keep clean and dry. Using the mask destroyed my

sinuses, using the mouth piece shoots slime across the room.

I feel like I've been through an assault on the lowest settings even.

I hate, hate, HATE the damned cough assist!

I'm happy for those who benifit from this machine.

For me, pneaumonia is less painful to me than using a cough assist.
