Is anyone taking anything good for fatigue??? I always feel so worn out,

without having done anything.

By the way, my arms still hurt a lot. I guess this pain is never going

away. :-(

Meg

PS - Does anyone know any good jokes? I could use a laugh. :-) Please!

Sorry, I don't have a joke to share that isn't a " clean " one, but I take

Mestinon to reduce my fatigueness.

How would you describe your fatigue? Are you in the middle of doing something

you normally do (without even thinking about it) and suddenly you're

straining to keep going or you can't continue without resting for small

periods? It takes longer for you to complete tasks that took very little time

or effort to do before ... this what I experienced and my neurologist put me

on Mestinon.

However, if you're more like yawning, feeling sleepy /nodding off for no

apparent reason or having a hard time concentrating then it could be due to

lack of proper sleep or diet related. Have you considered having a pulmonary

test or sleep study done to rule them out?

Just a few thoughts from your fellow SMA'er who is a type II and 41 plus a

woman (if it means anything now-a-days).

Sorry-I've no advice re. fatigue - but I hope you find

some relief soon. Here's a couple of good ones, safe

for mixed company of all ages, that my son Bryce told

me lately...

Why did the person take a bowling ball into the

restroom?

To see the toilet bowl.

What do you call two banana peels on the floor?

A pair of slippers.

What do you call it when two dinosaurs crash into each

other?

A Tyrannosaurus Wreck.

And, one more oldie but a goodie...

How many people with Attention Deficit Disorder does

it take to screw in a light bulb?

What color is your bike?

That's all I've got for now. Hope everyone is well,

and that spring is bringing happiness and hope.

Angie,

I tried the Mestinon. I was constantly nauseous and still felt tired. My

fatigue starts when I get in my chair, I guess. My breathing has been ruled

out as a cause. My arms have the same strength as before, so do my legs.

My arms still hurt and maybe having this constant pain drains my energy. I

have good moments during the day, but they are few. My doctor also ruled

out that its my SMA(2) progressing. He keeps telling me not to do so much

and gives me pain killers, which of course, cause some drowsiness. But I've

never felt this tired, even when on more pain meds.

I give up.

Blessed Be,

Meg

Hey Meg,

Have you been checked for repetitive stress injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome

and tennis elbow? (You can get TE from using a computer too...weird, but true.)

There's also cumulative trauma disorder, which is a combination of various RSI

symptoms.

Blessings,

Holly

Meg, never say that.

Don't give up. Now that you have explained your fatigue-ness better, it may be

related to your diet. I am no dietitian, but I know foods can effect your

moods and MO-JO. Also, just breathing during the day wasn't what I tried to

convey ... it is your actual sleep behaviour that I was referring to. If you

don't get enough recuperative sleep your body doesn't recharge properly.

Too much mestinon does create weakness and can make you feel tired, so you

likely took too much or took it too late. Every person is different and we

process stuff differently too. I would like to know when you took the

mestinon, how much and for how long? It is also important to note, never wait

too long b4 eatting after you take a mestinon dose. I know no SMA person to

take the regular dose a MG person does (which is one whole pill, three times

a day). If you did then no wonder you " fell apart " .

I am just curious, so answer only if you want to.

Angie,

I think I get enough sleep. I do need assistance to be turned from one side

to another, usually three times a night. I seem to sleep more then before I

was on any antidepressants. I started on Lexapro over a year ago, but its

affects have been wearing off, so now I am taking Cymbalta 60mg. I see a

slight improvement, not much.

For my fatigue, my shrink put me on Adderall, to be taken only in the

morning. I've been on it for about 2-3 weeks, not much improvement, if any.

The Mestinon was started at 60mg three times a day, after a meal. Is that

too much? I'm 5'0 " and probably 95-100lbs. I'm still taking the

Hydrocodone (325/10mg) for the arm pain and Xanax (.5mg) three times a day.

I have noticed that my appetite has become worse. I always ate like a bird,

but since the Mestinon, I lost my appetite. I begin eating after 2-3pm or

later. And I have to force myself to eat.

The only positive effect I felt from the Mestinon was that I woke up in the

mornings rapidly, not sleepy, feeling awake and alert. Yet, as the day

progressed, same amount of fatigue and headaches and nausea.

My left arm hurts so badly now, just from typing this email. The MD doc

told me I have tendonitis and the syndrome people get from typing in both my

arms, plus I have thin bones. And that was it. I got a prescription for

Darvecet. It doesn't touch my pain.

I need serious help. I can't live like this anymore. The pain never stops,

nor the fatigue. Our new family doctor told my mom on Friday, that I like

to exaggerate how much pain I am in. I'm changing doctors. How can a

doctor help me if he doesn't believe me?

How do I not give up Angie??? Some days are unbearable for me. Help me.

Blessed Be,

Meg

Excuse my language, but shit yeah! 60mg 3 times a day is WAY TOO MUCH!

Keep in mind that Mestinon is meant for people with Mavias Gravis (MG -

pronounced mah vee us - graw vus) so when my neurologist put me on it he told

me to " play " with dosage in order to find my ideal dose; enough to remove the

augh I felt versus feeling worse - more tired, weak, diarrhea, stomach gas or

any possible side-effect.

What he told me to do was start like this (it isn't addictive either, so

playing with the dosages won't hurt):

day 1 - one half pill (30mg) taken anytime during the day, I chose mornings.

day 2 - two half pills with eight hours in between, I chose b4 getting out of

bed in the morning and one 8hrs later.

day 3 - three half pills with 4-5hrs in between them, I chose b4 getting out

of bed in the morning (730am), the 2nd 6hrs hours later and the last one 6

hours after that.

day 4 - one whole 60mg pill taken anytime during the day, I chose mornings.

day 5 - two whole pills with eight hours in between, I chose b4 getting out of

bed in the morning and one 8hrs later.

day 6 - three whole pills with 4-5hrs in between them, I chose b4 getting out

of bed in the morning (730am), the 2nd 6hrs hours later and the last one 6

hours after that.

WHAT I did and discovered was that after day 4 I began to get an upset

stomach, felt weak and tired. I told my neurologist and he told me to back

down to day 3 for a period of time. I was to keep doing this until I came to

a happy medium where I felt more like my old self with no side effect.

Eventually, I found that a 30mg pill when I wake up carries me through an

average day and by the time I am in bed my MOJO has faded. By then who cares

cuz you'd be sleeping. If my day is busier than normal, I will take another

30mg pill 8hrs after my first pill. For me I can handle that dose and live

with the occasional bubbly stomach (it sometimes gurgles especially if I

don't eat within two hours of taking a pill or I have a lot of busy days in a

row). Being at or beyond 60mg a day for more than two or three days in a row

makes me feel like crap.

I am shocked your doctor just non-chalantly told you to take the mestinon as

if you were a MG patient? I was raised by a mother who was a RNA in the

Canadian Air Force, so maybe I am too medically nosey to let any doctor dump

drugs on me too readily. Taking drugs was my last option and I am so glad it

has done me well.

Meg - did your doctor suggest a test for the alledged carple tunnel syndrome?

Of course even my GP didn't want me to take the truest test that involves a

dull probe being jammed into the underbelly of the wrist area, but a test

that sends shocks along a nerve path will also do the trick and let the GP

know if you truly have carple tunnel syndrome.

If the signals get by then it ain't the cause of your present pain. I have

small wrists too and yes they ache when typing a lot. Maybe you need another

way too type or a smaller keyboard (I use a Hacker keyboard cuz its footprint

size is barely a ruler long).

Here's a curious george question - are you getting enough calcium and iron in

your diet? How are you at eatting red meats or drinking milk? Not enough of

these things may inflict some of the aches and fatigueness too.

Every time I have gone through serious, prolonged periods of fatigue, it's been

related to

my clinical depression, not my SMA. As soon as my meds get worked around or

increased

I get my energy back.

oh my gosh, if I took that much xanax I would never wake up!
