Guest guest
Sounds like you had a sinus infection that is aspirating into your chest. When secretions turn yellow, you need antibiotics. I take Augmentin (sp?) when I get respiratory infections. Vicki
Guest guest
When I got sick in December my doc started me on Biaxin for 10 days and Xopenex nebulizer treatments 3/day. It seemed to be OK. I found the most relief from the Xopenex (I could actually breathe!). I don't know if the Biaxin did much (it was most likely viral) but it prevented a secondary infection. x <lindajmoss@...> wrote: i started with a sore throat on thursday with a lot of phelgm coming from my throat, a couple of the times a day the phlegm was yellowish and a few flecks of blood. on friday throat was bit worse in morning but getting better by night. occassional yellowish phlelgm. more clear phlegm than thurs, but again feel it is coming from lower throat rather than chest. very husky voice! today throat better also voice moving closer to normal however in morning more phlegm coming from chest but that might be due to it settling there over night. i am using the cough assist 4 times a day to help keep things moving my questions are 1. at what point do you decide to take antibiotics 2. which antiobiotic do you feel is the best one to use? i have moved to a new area and have a new gp who does not seem to understand how aggressive chest infections need to be treated in relation to SMA and i am worried she has given me the most effective antibiotic ( co-amoxiclav 375mg 3 times a day) i dont feel ill just tired and a bit vague. luckily i dont get ill very often but when i do it takes me sometime to get all of my 6 pa's up to speed with using a cough assist, bipap, chest phyios etc so a list like this is great for tips! linda
Guest guest
I also take Augmentin when I get the flu, which always turns into bronchitis or pneumonia. My brother and I, we both start on antibiotics when the flu-like symptoms appear. I get started on them early, and hope that they fight off a lung infection. I usually stay sick for 3-4 weeks. I didn't get a flu shot this past flu season, so I hope I don't catch any nasty bug, or I'll end up in the hospital. I hope you feel better soon! *hugs* Eternal Blessings, Meg. * (My Blog: <http://360./pink-tulip@amerite ch.net> http://360./pink-tulip@ameritec h.net) _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of VickiLJurney@... Guest guest
For me, I decide to get antibotics when my " goobers " (I know it's also another name for peanuts, but I call my cough ups " goobers " LOL) are greenish or if I am running a fever too. I am still able to cough on my own when sitting, so all I do in addition is to take my abutimol (sp?) aka ventilin mist four times daily for two days then work it down to 3 - on 3rd day, 2 - on 4th day and one a day until the colour disappears in my goobers. Morning is always worse. I also will take a mild off the shelf medicine to stop runny noses. My favourite is dimatappe. Angie amoxicillin is usually the antibotic I take. Guest guest
i think it's crucial to take the correct antibiotic for the bacteria infecting you. the trend to use a broad spectrum antibiotic increases the presence of antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria. when i suspect an infection, my infectious disease specialist does a culture and sensitivity test on the relevant body fluid. this takes 2-3 days, so if i'm too sick to wait, she'll make an educated guess about the correct antibiotic, and adjust the treatment if needed. Guest guest
I have had the best results using levequin antibiotic. I¹m on it right now actually... I normally start antibiotics as soon as I have any congestion whatsoever from a cold and I have to say that I¹ve learned the hard way how important that is. In October I had a very mild cold and didn¹t take any antibiotics (for the first time ever). Although the cold didn¹t get really bad, ever since Oct I have had more congestion and more trouble clearing my lungs. A few weeks ago I started getting a lot of little mucus plugs in my lower left lobe. Then last week I had a pretty major plug which left me unable to breathe into a large portion of my left lung for a full day/night. Even though I did not feel ³sick² I decided to take levequin to see if it would help and within 48 hrs I was breathing much better than I have since Oct. I actually forgot what ³normal² breathing feels like! I think that I probably had some low level bacterial infection from the cold that gradually got worse over the months. I thought I was finally going to get through a cold without any antibiotics but NO! :-P At least this is my assessment so far... Guest guest
not sure how how my last email got sent before i finished! anyways i was saying i still dont have a temp but about every hour i will get a tickle in my throat, start sneezing and coughing then that seems to create a lot of congestion in my upper chest which then takes me about 20 mins to clear using various techniques. does that pattern sound familiar to anyone.?? my chest with be fine before this tickle triggering sneezing and coughing. also nicole i was wondering how you manage to have know you have plugs in your left lung? my lung most likely to get infected is my left and an old dr said that is due to it being smaller due to the heart and the shape of it to accommodate the heart is harder to clear of secretions. cheers linda Re: Re: advice re respiratory infections I have had the best results using levequin antibiotic. Guest guest
Glad to are feeling better!!! I have not taken Levequin yet. Since Cipro is still working for me I am kind of saving Levequin for when Cipro is no longer effective. Take care! Lori wrote: > I have had the best results using levequin antibiotic. Guest guest
I would start antibiotics at the point you are at. Of course, ideally, getting a culture would be optimum. Also, when I get sick, the congestion is exclusively in my left lung. I think it is because my spinal curves to the left and that lung is more compromised. Guest guest
, I know exactly what you mean! When I get sick, I have the same problem. Usually, when I get a " coughing fit " I use my ancient IPPB machine and get a breathing treatment. Nine out of ten times that clears it. Because of all the extra secretions I always start antibiotics right away and increase my breathing treatments and cofflator. I hope you feel better soon.
