Guest guest
Hello, I am sorry if this has been discussed. I just joined and have read back a bit and it seems like there was a somewhat similar topic a bit back. I have a 6 year old daughter with type II. She has never tolerated weight baring, but we have had AFOs on and off, because that is what we were told to do. She HATES them, and cries that they hurt. About a year ago, i chucked them and never got new ones after asking exactly WHY does she have to wear them. I was told that they would make her foot more " normal looking " and prevent ankle contractures. I have felt guilty on and off for not using them, my daughters foot does not stretch to a 90 degree angle anymore, but she still wears shoes fine (i also let her go barefoot in the summer which she loves, and i have been told not to do). After reading one a comment in one of the recent posts about contractures happening anyway, i am wondering what you all would do. Now, as adults, would you go back and use the AFOs or not use them? Do you wish your parents would or wouldn't have? One of our doctors told me she looks great and not to worry about it, and another told me i was silly for letting a 6 year old make medical decisions for herself. I am REALLY curious how you feel about the choices you had as a child. I feel like she is so powerless in some ways, i try to give her the power to make as many (appropriate) decisions concerning herself as possible. Thank you very much for any insights!
