Guest guest
Here is another good reason to go to The Power of Parents Rally. This really got my blood boiling!! Attached is the AAP letter of opposition to the New York thimerosal bill. " Although all scientific research, including the most recent Institute of Medicine study, indicates that Thimerosal is has no negative impact on infant or child health or development, (including no relationship whatsoever with autism) the highest level of public concern, (driven by junk science) led to a decision to remove or significantly reduce Thimerosal in childhood vaccines. " The AAP sent out an Action Alert asking all their members to send a similar message to Governor Pataki. Below I have pasted the opinion of local pediatrician who took issue with the Buffalo News editorial that endorsed the NY thimerosal bill. News'thimerosal view was sorely misinformed " The Aug. 25 editorial " Why take risk on thimerosal? reveals the ignorance and danger of The News' position. There is no evidence that thimerosal poses any risk to anyone, so why legislate against it? This bill represents very bad public health policy that is based on junk beliefs and mass hysteria, not on the evidence of science. The argument urging the governor to sign it contains no valid information in its favor. Certainly misguided bans in other countries and states and the support of a few local legislators are not valid reasons to jeopardize the use of vaccines to prevent disease and death. This bill is completely unnecessary and will harm the public's health. To legislate based on fear and misinformation is anathema to those of us who work tirelessly for the health and welfare of our communities. Enacting this legislation implies that the vaccines that have virtually eradicated many diseases, constituting one of the greatest public health accomplishments of the past century, are dangerous. This inference is the key reason my colleagues and I are so opposed to the legislation. Further, this bill denigrates our informed scientific and medical communities. To allow fear and misinformation to jeopardize the robustness of our immunization success is a disservice to New Yorkers, and endangers our children. The News' recommendation is ill advised. Judelsohn, M.D. Buffalo Pediatric Associates " Conviction is worthless unless it is converted into conduct. " Carlyle Apparently, the AAP leadership's 'conviction' has changed since the 1999 recommendation to remove thimerosal from vaccines and the opinion, " Mercury in all of its forms is toxic to the fetus and children and efforts should be made to reduce exposure to the extent possible to pregnant women and children as well as the general population. " AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS: PEDIATRICS Vol. 108 No. 1 July 2001, pp. 197-205 The Power of Parents 'conviction' has triumphed over the AAP's hysterical 'conduct' in California, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois and now New York. Our 'conviction' has altered public health policy. ONLY 21 DAYS AWAY... Don't miss this opportunity to let the AAP see The Power of Parents 'conviction' first hand. " Judelsohn, MD, a pediatrician in Buffalo, N.Y., and a spokesman for the American Academy of Pediatrics " . It does not appear to have that info. in his " opinion " ..which is more like an infomercial by AAP. That makes my blood boil even more! Guest guest
& Bobbie, According to the AAP's " Technical Report: Mercury in the Environment: Implications for Pediatricians " (2001) (my new favorite reference) - http://tinyurl.com/9eyex " When vaccines containing thimerosal have been administered in recommended doses, hypersensitivity has been noted. Very high exposures to thimerosal-containing products - as components of intramuscular injections, used for painting omphaloceles, as a perservative in y-globulin administered at high-doses or for a long period of time, or as intentionally ingested -- have resulted in toxicity, including acrodynia, chronic mercury toxicity, renal failure, and neuropathy. " (p. 201) [References to specific studies are cited in the report, but I didn't bother to type them in.] So, Dr. Judelsohn seems misinformed when he makes this statement: " There is no evidence that thimerosal poses any risk to anyone, so why legislate against it? " Perhaps a slogan for the rally - " Get it right! " (By the way, please forgive my typos. I have a very active nine-year- old today.) _____________ Here is another good reason to go to The Power of Parents Rally. This really got my blood boiling!!
